Selfish Meetup Proposal

Fri April 27 at 8:00 PM, Pica Pica
401 Valencia St, San Francisco, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
I'll be in San Francisco 19th April to 6th May and it would be great to meet some MeFites. Lets meet at Pica Pica (Mission) @ 8pm.
Felt slightly cheeky posting this since I'm more of a lurker than active poster, but I'm going to be there alone on business so I thought I would abuse IRL for some instant friends.

I've left the location blank since I'm sure you can make a more educated pick than I.

Bonus: you can tell what there is to do in person instead of having to read yet another recommendations AskMe.

In order to pick a venue, it might help if we knew:

- where are you staying?
- will you have access to a vehicle?

Another relevant question is what are you hoping to do? Drink? Walk around looking at shit? Hang out on the beach?

Now I'm looking forward to meeting the personified embodiment of primordial darkness!

Oops wait, I misread your name. Forget the bit about primordial darkness. I'm still up for a meetup though.

I suspect that good authentic Mexican food might be easier to come by in SF then in the UK.

Are you proposing a taco meetup? I would eat tacos.

At the moment, I have nothing useful to say, or even coherent, really, but I'm putting this here to remind me to do so later when I've had more coffee.

I just moved to the bay area and I don't know anyone yet. Selfish meetup hijacked!
posted by Nutri-Matic Drinks Synthesizer at 8:22 AM on April 16, 2012

Let's get on a roll, then: I moved to SF recently and know just one MeFite as yet. +1 hijack!

How about Gracias Madre? Tacos for the vegans in the house, and for we/me gluten-free folk. http://www.yelp.com/biz/gracias-madre-san-francisco

Week of the 30th-5th is looking mighty open. Except evening of the 4th. Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, and I have a prior engagement at the Paramount movie palace in Oakland.
posted by nakedcodemonkey at 10:59 AM on April 16, 2012

Gracias Madre isn't so great on the taste scale. If you want decent gluten free in the Mission you should go to Pica Pica.
posted by loriginedumonde at 11:32 AM on April 16, 2012

Sorry my post was very light on details, I was going to kind of go with the flow. To clarify:

where are you staying?
Right by Union Square

will you have access to a vehicle?
No, public transport only sorry

Another relevant question is what are you hoping to do? Drink? Walk around looking at shit? Hang out on the beach?
As I said I'm open. But eating, drinking and merriment would be my preference. I am fully pro taco.

Now I'm looking forward to meeting the personified embodiment of primordial darkness!

We just call that BART around here, but thanks.

Pica Pica is indeed tasty. But they don't do tacos. So no dice, sadly, unless y'all would be into delicious Venezuelan arepas and maize'wiches.

Erberus, you'll be near insane amounts of mass transit. BART, Muni Metro trains, the Market Street historic trolley, cable cars, buses. Saunter over to Powell and Market to pick up any of it.

For a unique SF experience: go bring a book or laptop down to Wicked Grounds, the kinky cafe, some afternoon. They have good food made on premises, coffee that doesn't suck, nice music, free wifi, squishy chairs, and a mellow vibe. Along with bondage art on the walls, deviant sex toys for sale, stacks of board games to borrow, and a cage for naughty subs to chill out in.

La Oaxaqueña has grasshopper and/or tarantula tacos if you're into that sort of thing. Service can be spotty.

Set it up and I shall endeavor to be there. There is a really active Reddit community here (we average 2-3 events per day in each region) if you feel like drinking with geeks, pm me for details.

I, for one, will submit to whichever snarky Internet overlords appear to have the most rambunctious drinking habits.
posted by Nutri-Matic Drinks Synthesizer at 10:17 AM on April 18, 2012

OK I'm going to start trying to push this towards a definite time/venue.

I think I'll go with Pica Pica because it seems to me that dietary concerns will probably put off more people than whether there are actually tacos or not.

I'll go for 28th April @ 1pm for the proposed time.

I'll push it to confirmed time/venue Saturday unless people object.

PS: I've also just booked tickets to see DJ Shadow on the 28th in case anyone is going to that.

I'm probably the only lobbyist for Pica Pica, and regrettably have commitments through this weekend. Some other thread-jacker, stand!

Thinking about it, could you do Friday 27th?
posted by Erberus at 11:07 AM on April 22, 2012

If this is happening, I'm good to go for Friday or Saturday. Now I just need to figure out how to get to Pica Pica via caltrain and bart. Woo San francisco!
posted by Nutri-Matic Drinks Synthesizer at 10:45 AM on April 23, 2012

That's pretty easy: Caltrain to Millbrae, BART to 16th, then walk a block west on 16th and a block north on Valencia.
posted by madcaptenor at 1:07 PM on April 23, 2012

I'm game for Friday after work. I'll be driving from the peninsula, so I can drive you (Nutri-Matic) if you can get to my nearby Caltrain station. First IRL!
posted by Little Orphan Ennui at 7:17 PM on April 23, 2012

Ok I've switched it to Friday and pushed it to confirmed (hopefully not too late in the day).
posted by Erberus at 10:18 PM on April 23, 2012

Mumble. Friday.

It's all of four blocks from my house though, so I guess I can go.

See you then!

P.S. Mark yourself as attending if you are, peeps!
posted by spitefulcrow at 9:17 AM on April 24, 2012

Damn, I am kicking my ass for having to miss out. I've got a work commitment until 11 or so. Pica Pica will have kicked y'all out an hour before then.

Hey, according to the website there'll be live Latin music from 6-9. Enjoy!
posted by nakedcodemonkey at 12:53 AM on April 25, 2012

Glurg. I am out of town. Enjoy.
posted by eugenen at 11:30 AM on April 25, 2012

Ok so I'll wait outside and will be wearing a blue shirt and black trousers + jacket (also I look like a nerd as you would expect). I (can't) haven't made a reservation so hopefully it's not too busy. I haven't got a working (smart)phone either so if anything goes wrong at the last minute from my end have fun.
posted by Erberus at 7:55 AM on April 26, 2012

If Pica Pica doesn't work, I know a Belgian Fries place that's out of this world.

We went 28 comments in an SF meetup thread without a Frjtz joke? This has to be a record.

I have checked the "maybe" box because I am lazy and gingerbeer is out of town, which eliminates the most immediate source of my "Put your shoes on we're leaving right now" incentive. Will one of you who has my cell phone # please text me around 7 pm and tell me to put my shoes on and get my ass to the bus stop? Thank you.

If I ever get a cat I'm naming him Frjtz.

This would require you to settle the question of "how is Frjtz pronounced?" (Where's a linguist when you need her?)

I am a maybe, as I am thomasbrobber-less this evening but I have a dentist appointment this afternoon.

Do we know where people are wandering after Pica Pica? Surely we are going to Mission Bar?
posted by chatongriffes at 2:50 PM on April 27, 2012

No clue. But there's a a lot of bars a lot closer than the Bar, so if there's drinking after, I'm betting we stay around 16th and Valencia/Mission.
posted by rtha at 3:33 PM on April 27, 2012

I had a bit of time, so I thought I'd mention bars that we've ended up before. We're starting at Pica Pica, around 15th & Valencia. Some nearby bars:
* Buck Tavern's at Gough & Market.
* Zeitgeist's at 13th & Valencia, and it's outdoors.
* The Sycamore's near 17th & Mission, & it's outdoors too.
* Mission Bar's around 23rd & Mission.

There's also that bar next to the Roxie, and the other one down 16th on the same side - Skylark, maybe?
posted by rtha at 6:59 PM on April 27, 2012

Heads up - Metafilter's briefly down for maintenance tonight, at 10pm for 15-20 minutes. Just in case, I think everyone should follow sambosambo on Twitter.

rtha, I think the bar next to the Roxie is really small, & I don't know the Skylark offhand.
posted by Pronoiac at 7:21 PM on April 27, 2012

Down! How will we know where we are or what's happening?!

*freaks out*

Okay, done.

I get Skylark and whatever that other bar is confused with each other. Anyway, there's a shitload of bars around there, and even on a Friday night, we should be able to find somewhere to take us in, if need be.
