I'd be open to it, though since I don't own a car I'd have to arrange to ride with someone (I'd be willing to help with gas, of course).

I forgot to point out that carpooling is definitely advised, much like our Enchanted Forest trip of 2010 and the one coming up on the 30th of July.
And chipping in some gas $$$ is highly recommended.

Once we figure out who's up for this, we can work out the details.

I'm currently available both these weekends and I have a car.

I am intregued, although 15th through 18th may set a world record for longest meetup ever.

Well, yes, but...BEER!

BEER!

but mostly beer.

Will there be pretzels the size of my head?

What is it with you people and your fetish for over-sized baked goods?

What is it with you people and your fetish for over-sized baked goods?

baked goods = tasty
over-sized = more

over-sized + baked goods = more of the tasty

Oh, and I have no idea, Secretariat, if there will be giant pretzels. There is only one way to find out....

I would probably be interested in doing this at least one of the days, and can drive.

What are the costs associated with this? (any entrance fees + beers + foods, in general)
posted by curious nu at 3:16 PM on July 28, 2011

What does it cost to go to Oktoberfest? (site FAQ)
The Beers of Oktoberfest (PDF)
tl;dr - All-day passes are $4-$9 / after 5pm $8-$14 depending on day; most beers appear to be $4-$5. I didn't find anything about food other than "Over 50 Alpine food chalets serving a wide variety of ethnic foods". Your guess is as good as mine there.

On closer look I'm not seeing a huge (i.e. typical Portland-style beer fest) range of beers there. So to my mind this would be more about the Road-Trip/Event/Food aspects than the Beers per se. That's not a critique, just a clarification on what this meetup would have to offer. I still think it would be fun.

It's more of a cultural outing. With beer and tasty noms.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll be just like a trip to Bavaria.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll be just like a trip to Bavaria.

But without the TSA cavity search.

Or the stopover in Amsterdam.

Or the stopover in Amsterdam.

I'm now imagining if the airlines and TSA gave you an option of either a) a cavity search, or b) a stopover between your starting location and your final destination.

So, the obvious next question....which day(s) can everyone go?

Saturday, September 17th seems like it would work out best. Does it?
posted by nickthetourist at 5:01 PM on August 2, 2011

All I have to know is they have Warsteiner Dunkel on tap.
posted by fiercekitten at 9:46 PM on August 2, 2011

I do not object to September 17th. I will decline the cavity search.
posted by mimo at 11:30 PM on August 2, 2011

I will decline the cavity search.

In that case there will be a stopover somewhere.
I suppose we could make it the place we all meetup at prior to driving to Mt Angel.

Since we've ruled out cavity searches, I'm in. The 17th is fine with me. What time would we want to meet to make the drive there?
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:32 PM on August 3, 2011

It looks like the Alpine food booths open at 11:00am, so getting there shortly after makes sense to me. This would give ample time in which to consume copious amounts of both food and beer. And enjoy the other festivities, of course.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:27 PM on August 3, 2011

We could meet at noon at the Tualatin Park & Ride at SW 72nd Ave & Bridgeport Rd.
How does that sound to everyone?
posted by nickthetourist at 8:07 AM on August 6, 2011

That would put us there close to 1pm. Didn't you want to get there earlier?
posted by mimo at 10:51 AM on August 6, 2011

It would take me an hour and a half to make that trip by public transit, so if anyone's driving from the SE side or through downtown, I could meet them somewhere and avoid at least some of the long slow bus ride.

"A bus is a vehicle that travels twice as fast when you're running after it as when you're sitting in it."
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:51 AM on August 6, 2011

Greg, I don't live that far from you. I could probably give you a ride. That would leave two spots in my car.
posted by mimo at 1:55 PM on August 6, 2011

Excellent, thanks!

I had though getting there around noon would be good, but no one responded to that idea, so I suggested meeting at noon and then heading south.

Would meeting at 11:00am in Tualatin work for everyone?
posted by nickthetourist at 10:24 PM on August 6, 2011

Meeting at 11 works.

Ok, it's official.
Now we can begin sorting out the carpool details.

I'm a try to make this!
posted by Lutoslawski at 4:43 PM on August 11, 2011

I'll be able to give rides to 2 or 3 people (depends on whether or not a friend of mine can make it) and, since I'm coming from Gresham, can pick up pretty much anyone who's on the east side or wants to meet at a transit center.
posted by curious nu at 6:48 PM on August 16, 2011

Sounds fun. I'll be there. I can give a ride from NW/SW portland.

I'm going to give this one a super big maybe- but if cortex and I attend we'll bring our own transportation, so don't worry about saving us seats.

Is the phrase "super big maybe" enough for me to reference my favorite Mulder X-Files quote "I smell a big but coming."? I think it is!

More people = more beer per MeFite consumed.

More people = more beer per MeFite consumed.

That only works if we get a moratorium on new sign-ups. Or if we convince all the new sign-ups to come with us.

I think we're going to try to meander down to the fest, possibly bringing my two brothers, as well as the botbunch but I got called to work pretty much all night so we're having somewhat of a late start over here and Jenn wants to hit the market before we drive down. This is a very drawn out long way of saying we'll most likely be there but will try to meet up after you all have gotten to mt. angel.
