Sat May 13 at 1:00 PM, Amsterdam Bar and Hall
6 W 6th St, St Paul, MN, USA (Map & Directions)
It's March May Madness at the Amsterdam as Trivia Mafia hosts a 32-team tournament. Go big or go home!
Saturday, May 13, 1:00-5:00 pm. From the official event post:
Teams of up to 6 people will compete for the chance to win the grand prize of $600 (or one of our many sizable consolation prizes). So, if you are ready for four straight hours of craziness, join the team! Friends of Matt has won several times at this location so it has good juju.
Teams will be seeded via a short initial trivia round. Then we'll do four "stages" of trivia, with the tournament bracket updating as we go. At the end of each round, winning teams will advance and match up against another winning team. Losing teams will enter consolation pools, so they can keep playing trivia all day long.
Prizes will be awarded to each of the Final Four teams, with winners and runners-up in each of the 3 consolation pools getting something to take home.
I believe I can go to this!

We owe you for the team ticket, right? Should we bring cash?

The ticket was $100, so we can split it by however many join the team. Cash is probably easiest.
One month and counting! Should we set a practice session before then? Maybe at a Minneapolis location for a change?

Any chance you could deal in a late arrival? I've got a prior commitment but should be able to roll in a little after 1.

Hmm, good question. Usually it isn't an issue but with an event this large they might be more strict about people coming and going after it starts. I will investigate and report back.

Their response: "That's OK! They'll just have to wait for you to finish whatever round you're on when they arrive, and then they can hop in. "

Everyone excited for Saturday? Tellumo brings the team to 5, so if you are on the fence, now is the time to grab that 6th slot.
Trivia Mafia sent me a very long email this morning. Highlights:
"Greetings! And congratulations: You are one of the 32 teams slated to compete in the fifth-annual Trivia Mafia Spring Invitational on Saturday, May 13. You're clearly very smart, regardless of this weekend’s outcome.
...
This is a bracket tournament, so your team is going to be matched up one-on-one against another team in the room through four "stages" of trivia. The first stage is 32 teams, the second is 16, and so on. Each stage will consist of two regular rounds, a lightning round, a sound round, and an image round. If your team wins in Stage 1, you advance to Stage 2. If you lose, you drop down into what we call a "consolation pool," where you'll continue to compete against all of the other teams that lost during the same stage you did. We will begin the whole hullabaloo with a "seeding" round of 20 general knowledge questions.
...
Registration begins at noon. Bring your ticket. Your team will have a table reserved for you.
The tournament begins promptly at 1 PM. Make sure your entire team is present and ready to roll at that time. (If someone needs to show up late, that’s fine, but they will have to sit out the entire stage that is in play at the point of their arrival. So it’s best to start with your whole team present.)
We're aiming to wrap things up by 5 PM.
Cell phones are never allowed at a Trivia Mafia event, but this is doubly true at a tournament where more than two grand in cash and prizes is on the line. If our hosts see any of your team members on a cell phone while a round is in progress, your team will get a big fat zero on that round, and your names will be published online for all your future employers to see. Just kidding about that last part. But still, stay off the phones! There will be breaks between every "stage," at which point you can visit the bathroom and use your phone for emergencies.
Our beer sponsor for this event is Heineken! Grab one during the tournament. It makes you smarter, I swear.
And good luck! Sometimes that helps, too."

I should be there shortly after noon and will bring the gift certificate from our last win if anyone wants to get lunch or a pregame beer.
Today's IOQ (not sure it will be used in the tournament, but just in case): "Philadelphia police bombed a home occupied by members of a black liberation group on this day in 1985, destroying an entire neighborhood in the process. What was the name of this group?"

The bus was early so I'm here and signed us on. We're at a high-top near the stage. I'm on the patio enjoying fresh air as long as possible.

I was wrong. My theory, that Trump says "bigly" because he's heard people saying "big league" and misunderstood them, is falsified by evidence. Trump's Razor has failed me.
