NC! Triangle! Meetup! Time!

Sun May 29 at 4:00 PM, The Root Cellar
750 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC, USA (Map & Directions)
**Please note the date change! Sorry for any confusion!**

It's been too long since the Triangle Contingent got ourselves together, so let's meet up to eat some good food, drink some tasty beverages, and/or bitch about HB2. We've decided on a picnic with board games at Weaver Street Market on Sunday, May 29th at 4 pm!
We've had a number of ideas floating around for future meetups, and so I thought I'd keep this one pretty wide open and take suggestions from the crowd. Some thoughts/ideas:

What & Where:
1. I think the last few meetups have been in the Durm area, so maybe a Raleigh/CH/Cary location?
2. Trivia at the Pinhook was a blast, so we could do another round (there or elsewhere).
3. We've talked a few times about a potluck, which I love the idea of, but I'm not sure where we would do it. I will certainly offer Stately Rock Steady Manor, but it's all the way down in Fuquay-Varina, so not super convenient for most of you.
4. Other ideas? Picnic? Bulls game? Mini Golf? Karaoke?

When:
1. Honestly no idea. The weekend midafternoon timeslot when we met cortex and Secretariat last time was kind of neat in that the restaurant was quiet and had no trouble seating a large party. If we want to do trivia/karaoke/whatever schedule will be restricted based on where we go, so there is that.

What do y'all think?

yay! I am in. I would be down for trivia, food, picnic, Bulls game, etc. or we could play board games somewhere? I'm flexible on time, outside of office-job hours.

KARAOKE!!!!!

Or, I mean, whatever you guys wanna do, I'll come if I can. :)

Do you know anywhere good for karaoke, leesh? Board games sound good too...

I'll come if I can. I'm pretty new to MetaFilter.

I'm in.

I'd vote for something in Chapel Hill now that the students are gone. Plenty of good restaurants, bars, etc.

I'm flexible on time too outside of weekday work hours.

Rock Steady--Pinhook has karaoke nights sometimes, I have also been told there's a place out on 54 and I think one by the Asian market in Durham (near the South Square Target). I am happy to go outside of Durham for karaoke though. Or just for hanging out.

PS I love karaoke but have an extremely terrible voice, so like, be forewarned if we do that?
posted by leesh at 10:39 AM on May 13, 2016

There mere thought of karaoke makes me sweat, so ... I would vastly prefer something that is not that. (Sorry, leesh...) Chapel Hill is great, especially now that it is (going to be) quiet (I'm not there yet; I arrive imminently). My favorite place in CH (um, Carrboro, actually) is Weaver Street, followed by Luche Tigre if we're interested in sitting outside at a place that has good drinks and interesting guacamole. A Weaver Street picnic with board games might be pretty rad.

Ha, no worries! :) I like Lucha Tigre and would totally be up for that! Or Weaver Street too.
posted by leesh at 11:45 AM on May 13, 2016

I'm in for whatever! I will attend karaoke but not participate. I'm happy to sit in the corner with sockermom and make fun of the rest of you, though.

Anything on the weekend, I'm up for!

Weaver St. is good because it can accommodate pretty much any size crowd. Plus: decent food, good beer (if that's your thing), and who doesn't love a "it's still the 60s" vibe?

Yay for weekends, depending on which particular one. Daytime is better than nighttime for me, just cause I tend to be an early-to-bed person.

I think that's it! Is next weekend (21/22) too soon? After that is Memorial Day Weekend (which would be OK with me, but I'm assuming people are traveling/have plans).
posted by Rock Steady at 6:27 PM on May 13, 2016

Weaver St. would be delightfully easy for me. Note that lunch time with good weather on either Saturday or Sunday can get pretty crowded at Weaver, so better to ~4pm or later. I hope folks pick a day I can make it out. :)

Next weekend works for me--I could do any time on Saturday and could do 4 or later on Sunday. I have a blanket in the trunk of my car and a new game called Bring Your Own Book! I am READY.
posted by leesh at 7:11 AM on May 14, 2016

Sunday after 4 works better for me, but I should be able to swing Saturday after 4. Looking forward to it! I'll bring some cards.

Whoo-hoo! Picnic with board games at Weaver Street sounds awesome. I can do next weekend, either Saturday or Sunday.
posted by aka burlap at 10:27 PM on May 14, 2016

Damnit.

I live two blocks from Weaver Street and these things keep happening when I'm going to be out of town.

OK! So I have updated the post to confirm Saturday May 21st (this Saturday) at 4 pm. We can alter that (Sunday? The following weekend?) if people want, but this seems to work for just about everyone (and Saturday is much better than Sunday for me). Sorry thvaia, is the weekend of the 28/29th better for you?
posted by Rock Steady at 5:49 AM on May 16, 2016

Oh well. I am in DC this weekend. Rock Steady I still owe you and mediareport beers.
posted by Stewriffic at 2:52 PM on May 16, 2016

Haha, joke's on you, I don't drink beer! You can get me a milkshake or something though, if you want.

Is next weekend better for everyone? I hate being the scheduler! Someone do this emotional labor for meeeeee!
posted by Rock Steady at 4:48 PM on May 16, 2016

The following weekend (28/29) also is great with me!
posted by sockermom at 5:13 PM on May 16, 2016

I can do this weekend or next. If I don't chicken out. But it's like 10 minutes from my house, and board games, well, who doesn't love board games. Should I bring one? We've got approximately 72 versions of Munchkin, as well as Trivial Pursuit (original or 80s edition) or Carcassone (which I probably just misspelled). As well as Monopoly and possibly Clue. Let me know.

Rock Steady is it possible to send a message to everybody who RSVP'd so far asking for a vote on 5/21 vs. 5/28? The latter date is Memorial Day weekend so people might be going out of town...

Oh, and I will do my level best to get shoggoth to come. Even tho he's all "internet strangers!" and whatnot.
posted by tuesdayschild at 6:59 PM on May 16, 2016

I could also do Memorial Day weekend if that is better for people. I only own casual games like Bring Your Own Book, Fluxx, this one game I forget the name of but the art looks like Edward Gorey, Adventure Time Love Letters, Marrying mr Darcy, etc.

Hello MeFites,

LONG time reader/lurker (a decade or more?), never-poster who just this morning wondered if MeFi ever held in-person meet-ups in the Triangle. Well, you chose a location that is VERY close-by; there's no way I could not go. MeFi has been my internet "home" for quite some time. Also, this is my first actual post, though collectively I've probably spent months of my life on this site. Woo!

Welcome, houseofleaves!

OK, so since no one has mentioned Memorial Day weekend as a problem, but two people have issues with this weekend, I am going to flip-flop like a politician and change to Sunday, May 29th at 4:00pm (I'm switching from Saturday to Sunday because Saturday might be an issue for me, depending on how long my daughter's audition goes). I hope that's not an issue with other people who haven't spoken up yet, but so far it seems to be a less-problematic date.

So, looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday the 29th!

Thanks for setting this up, Rock Steady.

Just a heads-up that I like to bring my camera and take pictures. See for example my pictures from a previous meetup.

I'll do my best to get individual consent before taking photos, but if you know you don't want your photo taken or shared, please have the courage to tap me on the shoulder and tell me. It makes my life easier.

Woo! Looking forward to seeing everybody!

I think everyone should bring cake, in that case, but then I always think everyone should bring cake.

Weaver St has an excellent bakery, their cakes and pies are great. (And imo their breads and croissants are easily among the best in the Triangle)

Welcome houseofleaves and other first-time meet-uppers!

Market Street Coffee just across the street from Weaver Street Market makes good milkshakes. Their affogato made with choco ice cream is quite nice, although I have to admit my current favorite affogato is from Pizzeria Mercato.

Market St. Coffee also does some goooood ice cream even if you're not into coffee.

Hey y'all, just bumping this thread to remind everyone that we are still on for this Sunday. Weather looks perfect! Please forgive me if I get stuck in approximately 1,000,000 hours of traffic and I am late, but the WRAL Balloon Fest is happening this weekend about a half mile from my house, and this is the first time it has been in Fuquay so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
posted by Rock Steady at 9:13 AM on May 25, 2016 [2 favorites]

I'm glad you did, b/c I somehow had gotten it into my head that we were doing this on Saturday.

Do we want to make a rain plan?
posted by leesh at 4:24 PM on May 28, 2016

Yeah, I might have jinxed it there. Any ideas?
posted by Rock Steady at 3:27 AM on May 29, 2016

Hmmmmmmm. I can still make it, but yeah, weather sucks.
posted by Stewriffic at 5:36 AM on May 29, 2016

I don't know any alternate venues in the area, so I will still plan to show up at Weaver Street around 4 (if nothing else, at least the rain means I don't have to deal with balloon traffic) unless someone wants to suggest somewhere else to meet up. Keep an eye on this thread, or people can text/call me - I'll put my phone number in my profile for today.

Is there enough room inside Weaver Street to hang out and eat and stuff? I haven't been there in a while.
posted by leesh at 6:31 AM on May 29, 2016

There are some tables lining a hallway, and more tables under the canopy, but it's not possible to arrange tables together without blocking traffic.
posted by ardgedee at 6:42 AM on May 29, 2016

I don't think the inside of Weaver can accommodate 16 people together. The tables are mostly for two people.

The Root Cellar neaeby in Chapel Hill might work better, as it will almoat certainly be pretty quiet, can accommodate a big group, and has parking.
posted by sockermom at 7:43 AM on May 29, 2016 [1 favorite]

I think we should call it for The Root Cellar, on MLK at Hillsborough. The space is indeed excellent for this purpose. (Formerly Foster's Market on Airport Rd.) 4 p.m. I will MAKE myself be there because I have had zero interaction with people in person this weekend.

It's raining, so let's do that. Also my friend is moving to Norway for three years and has left me some board games, so I will bring at least one of them.
