Time to walk Broadway again

Sat June 13 at 10:00 AM, Castle Clinton
Castle Clinton National Monument, Battery Park, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Having just survived 19 miles of the Great Saunter I rediscovered my love for walking Manhattan. Anyone want to walk Broadway from Marble Hill to the Battery sometime this spring/summer?
It looks like it has been two years since it happened after happening pretty regularly. Anyone up for this either before it gets too warm or in the fall?

ETA: Consensus for 6/13 per the below.

I organized these in past years but had to give up due to the crazy/busy/insanity/exhaustion of my work at this time of year. I hope I will be able to make it this year.

Hoping that this will be on a Saturday as I work on Sunday.

I think I'd be up for it! What about Memorial Day weekend or will people be away?

Dammit, I missed the Great Saunter again. I'm definitely interested in this.

I'm up for Saturdays in general. ScienceGeek, did you get my PM? I'd sent one a few weeks ago before proposing this so as not to step on any toes, but posted when I didn't hear back.

Ocherdraco, I feel your pain. This was the first year I finally made it. Such an amazing day even if I didn't finish

I'll be out of town most of this month, but I'm in if you end up scheduling after May 27th.

I'd love to attend but will be out of town Memorial Day weekend. But feel free to schedule it then if that's what works for everyone else!

I would totally love to do this, so count me in!
posted by holborne at 8:06 AM on May 5, 2015

No need to do Memorial Day of course, just a suggestion. I am busy the weekends of May 30th-31st and June 6th-7th so hope it can be sometime not-then.

never got your note and my toes are encased in steel toed boots so no worries. June 13 is out for me as we have our annual fundraising benefit gala at work that Tuesday.

oh wow, I'd love to do this. The 13th would work for me.

Would 6/27 work for you, ScienceGeek since this is your baby?
posted by TravellingCari at 9:02 AM on May 7, 2015

6/27 is clear right now, but in terms of probability of really hot weather, I think it would make sense to go earlier in the month.

You really don't have to think of this as my baby. I stopped organizing these because my work had become more and more physically demanding and I'm totally thrilled that someone else has picked up the gauntlet!

I could make June 13th or 27th
posted by revertTS at 3:38 PM on May 7, 2015

I could do June 13th, but not the 27th -- moving on July 1st, so can't give up a whole day to Saunter Greatly.
posted by naturalog at 6:29 PM on May 7, 2015

I agree with ScienceGeek on cooler weather, and it seems as if 6/13 is best for most so let's go with that. 6/27 can be a rain date if we need?
Look forward to seeing everyone.

Could we move the time to 9:30 or even 10? I want to avoid the heat too, but getting there at 9AM is a bit of a stretch when traveling from Brooklyn.
posted by wiskunde at 8:18 AM on May 24, 2015

Aw, damn, if you were going the other direction I'd say you should all stop by the cast party for my cable access puppet show in the evening in Inwood Hill Park...
posted by gusandrews at 8:34 PM on May 29, 2015

I would actually be delighted to go the other direction, if that is an option, since I live pretty far south in Brooklyn, and don't think I can drag myself out of bed to get to Marble Hill at 9. Would totally not mind making the trip back later in the day.
posted by ferret branca at 4:54 PM on June 1, 2015

Going the other way is AOK with me as is starting later.
Does 10 at Castle Clinton work for everyone?
posted by TravellingCari at 1:01 PM on June 3, 2015

Would starting from the south make it a mostly uphill walk? My memory of the previous walks was that there was a point in the 100s where the street sloped up for a stretch, but I don't remember if the rest was level or slightly downsloping.

I feel like I'd be less likely to complete the whole 13.7 miles starting at the Battery, but, it might be nice to get the annoyingly tourist-crowded slog of the downtown/midtown leg over with first. And, there weren't really a lot of options for where to get food & drink down at the Battery, there's bound to be somewhere more interesting, convenient, & cheap to get lunch/dinner going uptown.

posted by TravellingCari at 6:52 PM on June 6, 2015

Oh, this makes it way easier for us to get there early too. We can just take the PATH to WTC and head down to Battery Park.
posted by naturalog at 8:21 PM on June 6, 2015

Big Apple Barbecue will be happening at Madison Square Park during the walk. If the lines aren't crazy, it might be a place to grab lunch.
posted by oh yeah! at 7:06 PM on June 7, 2015 [1 favorite]

I happened to be at Castle Clinton with a friend yesterday and based on the utter zoo that was the south side due to Statue/Ellis tickets, I'd say we should meed at the north side of CC. That's the entrance closest to the rest rooms and its small museum exhibit.
posted by TravellingCari at 7:05 AM on June 8, 2015

yeah, meeting at Castle Clinton can be fraught with terror. I'd recommend that someone who plans to be early to bring an umbrella or a helium balloon to hold as an identifying feature - like you do at those concerts in Central Park.
posted by sciencegeek at 3:00 AM on June 9, 2015

I'm going to go for a run in the morning, so I will not meet you at 10 at Castle Clinton but will catch up to you. (Maybe wherever you stop for lunch?) I'll MeMail for a few phone numbers so you don't have to keep updating the thread.

Quad: There are a number of photos from one of the past walks. Re-finding that in my Flickr feed was what inspired me to suggest this.

Unannihilated: I'll PM you mine so you have it.

Let's hope the stormy Saturday prediction is wrong.
posted by TravellingCari at 11:22 AM on June 10, 2015

So it looks as if tomorrow may have storms, but won't be a wash out. My thought is, barring torrential rain when we'd be heading out, start and walk as far as weather allows? Other thoughts?

Aw man, it turns out I can't make it since I just got a bunch of last-minute freelance work. I hope the walk is fun!

Yes, I agree with starting out and walking as far as weather permits.

Weather forecast sounds better. This is a relatively recent photo of me which should hopefully work. Failing that, 5'2, shoulder length highlighted brown hair. Plan to wear grey capris, white/brown/grey top in a paisley-ish pattern. Lavender purse.

In retrospect, it would probably have been more helpful had I described myself as wearing a bright orange shirt. I'm used to describing myself to people for bike rides, where everyone dresses like something skittles vomit up.

Hmm. Or I could have mentioned the boonie hat. Or, considering the crowd, my race. Come to think of it, I really didn't describe myself well.

Too bad we didn't all connect. I popped over to Castle Clinton from my nearby home.

I just wanted to say Hi to hexatron, who clued me he'd be there. hexatron is the best. We worked together ages ago for decades and decades. I started young, hexatron is just old.

I thought I might tag along through my neighborhood streets, and point out local items of historical interest. My world boundaries start to dip at Canal, and dry up altogether at 14th, but hexatron and d. z. wang were such engaging company that I blinked my eyes and I was at 42nd Street.

I led our little group in one door and out the other of the Strand Bookstore. Wherein we paused to shake hands with the historic jonmc who works there. Update: jonmc has moved. To the Bronx with pips. Hi pips!

The full walk would be great next time. I prefer a slower pace with more conversation, and I think you all proved that's doable on a long summer day.
posted by StickyCarpet at 6:15 PM on June 15, 2015

Didn't anyone see hexatron's lovely, crisp, brightly-hued Metafilter T-Shirt?

My phone was out, too. That's why I let my feet do the dialing to talk with hexatron.

I think hexatron deserves an introduction around here. He is among the legendary and pioneersing CG super-hackers. We worked together with Tom Duff, too. Duff is the only person in the same league with hexatron. Programming optimizations,( think Duff's Device), crystallized everywhere in and around hexatron's code, which was comically baffling to read, but ran faster than anything ever seen on those primordial computers, running Bell Labs Unix, straight K&R "C". Although, hexatron's C looked more like Assembly.

hexatron can take his unreadable, yet concise, C coding to epicly microscopic and poetic depths. (There's even some insider stories I can't tell here, but will share on the next walk.) With today's powerful computers hexatron's code runs faster than real time.

Oh you two sound amazing. Yes, definitely need to do this again.

Also for oh yeah/naturalog: made it out to the Statue for work today. Learned way too much about oxidized copper. The railings on the Tribeca building near African Burial Ground are one of their examples
