Sun October 12 at 11:00 AM, Pacificana
813 55th Street, Brooklyn, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's get dim sum at Pacificana on Sunday, October 12th.
Locals, what's a good time to meet?

I will also be in NYC that week, with misfish in tow - part of our month-long intro to the US. We would also like to meet the NYC mefites!

Also, there's a Nintendo store? Awesome!

In what part of the week would you prefer to meet up, alynnk?

How about earlier in the week? I wouldn't mind taking advantage of the collected wisdom of the locals for suggestions on what to do with the rest of our time in the city.

Anyone have preferences for Saturday afternoon / Sunday brunch / Monday evening?

What about Sunday dim sum? We haven't been back to Pacificana since January.

Let's see, misfish and I arrive on 8 October, and leave on 16 October. Hopefully we can combine meetups, but we're open to anything.

His thoughts, do you and misfish have any plans set that we should work around? Sunday dim sum sounds fabulous to me -- thanks, oh yeah! -- but will it work for you?

Sunday dim sum sounds pretty awesome to me too.

We have basically not planned anything yet, including accommodation. We're going to book some theatre tickets eventually, but right now we're open.

We're always up for dim sum!

alynnk, do you want to switch this to confirmed status for Sunday 10/12 to get it on the sidebar? (I forget how long IRL posts can stay in proposed status before they get frozen to changes.)

Thanks, oh yeah! Wedding planning is making me bonkers, so I kind of spaced out on this a bit. Will do that now!

It looks like the time defaulted (or the time zone?) to 8pm - we should aim for an 11am start, which means everyone gathering in the Pacificana lobby/stairwell between 10:30 & 11 so we can get ourselves on the list to be seated.

Ooh, sounds good!

I guess this will be the 'hang out in Brooklyn' day for me and misfish.

All you locals: anything else we should check out, besides dumplings?

Oh, count me in too. I keep meaning to go to a NYC meetup. I liked the Chicago meetup.

Really looking forward to this. We got in to NYC yesterday and have since been wandering around with our jaws hanging open like the pair of antipodean yokels that we are.

I met some visitors from Wichita on the red line [1] tonight who were quite lost, and at one point asked, to the car at large, "Do you guys do this every day?" And suddenly the whole car opened up. Two or three people helped them read their map. People started telling stories about how long they'd been in New York and how they'd learned to navigate the subways. Somebody carried their luggage off the train for them. It was downright heart-warming.

[1] says your seasoned New York narrator. Ahem.

We met a guy walking his dog this morning who overheard our usual banter and thought we were lost. We didn't need directions, so he gave us a brief New York accent coaching lesson, including how to pronounce 'Nu Yawk' and 'fuggedaboudid!'. And he let us pet his dog. Sorry, 'dawg'. People are nice here.

So, there's a screening of Guys & Dolls at the old restored movie palace on 175th & Broadway on Sunday (IRL). I'm probably going to need to go back home to Jersey after dim sum to collapse into a food coma, but it's a beautiful old theater and a lot of good guests for the pre-show, should be a fun & inexpensive taste of Broadway if anyone's interested.

This sounds great, I'm just coming down from a week of nasty grad work, so I would love a change of company.

Given how large this party is, I would like to gently suggest that everyone come prepared with adequate/small bill cash to pay the bill so as to avoid doing that thing where the waitress has to run some cards, but then some of the cards have two people's share and some of the cards have one, and then some people are paying in cash, but one of them only has a 100 dollar bill and needs 80 singles as change, and one person only has a 5 but is covered by so-and-so, but then somehow we're still short by $20, and...

Just bring some money. If this presents a hardship for anyone, please feel free to MeMail me or if you have objections to this plan please voice them in the thread. I would just like to avoid a clusterfuck when the bill arrives.

I think our last Pacificana tab came to around $30 per person? It's not in the IRL thread, but I remember it being a little pricier than our Golden Unicorn dim sum meetups. Definitely break a $20 beforehand somewhere if you're coming fresh from the ATM.

Pacificana tables seat 10 people max, depending on the final head count they may seat us at two adjacent smaller tables instead of one. So, everybody please check your on Yes/Maybe/No button and/or update the thread by Sunday morning before you enter a subway internet dead-zone, so we know whether or not we're supposed to be waiting for you.

Excellent points! FWIW, I have to leave the restaurant by 1:15 to catch a train, though I fully intend to include an "early departure tax" if we haven't settled by then.
posted by unknowncommand at 10:54 AM on October 11, 2014

I actually think tabs were more like $15 per person, max, last time we went to Pacificana. See y'all tomorrow!

Turns out I have to deliver something to Brooklyn later that afternoon, so if I come to this I will just end up in Prospect Park in between and not do my laundry or shopping or food prep.

Wow, I just threw you over for my laundry. I promise I'm not all that interesting to meet anyway.

Sorry, d.z. wang, maybe next time. I'm in the PATH train now, should make it to the lobby by 10:45 if this & the N train run smoothly.
posted by oh yeah! at 6:27 AM on October 12, 2014

The mister and I are currently attempting to navigate the train system, waiting on the N, so we may slightly late, but we are coming.
posted by alynnk at 7:11 AM on October 12, 2014

Ugh, PATH service sucks. Boarding the N at 34th street now.

We just got to the venue. I am with Red Thoughts, who is a brown bearded dude wearing a Polo shirt that proclaims 'Hong Kong' (it seemed apropos). I am all in blue. Checking out the table sitch now.

Walking in the front doors now with a guest.

For future reference - bill came to $130 plus tip, $15 per person. :-)
