Metafilter Oregon Coast Labor Day Weekend Beach Party Meetup: Lincoln City Edition
posted April 28, 2014 3:36 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Sat August 30 at 2:00 PM, Lincoln City Beach House! Temporary address
801 U.S. 101, Lincoln City, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
There will be: food! games! music! probably drinking! definitely fire on the beach! camaraderie! et cetera et cetera. Spreadsheet!
Beach meetup day is August 30! Say starting around 2pm or so. If you've expressed interest I've emailed and/or memailed you with the house address. If I haven't, send me a message and I'll get that to you. Parking might be kind of iffy but we should have a better idea of how to work that in a couple of days.

Bring foods and drinks!

Pets are, unfortunately, 100% no-go (the house owners, it turns out, are kind of crazy on this point; we'll try somewhere else next year!).

I have interest in this. We (myself, Mister Rabbit, Kid Rabbit) would not be staying there, as we have a pooch, but we may come hang. Saturday or Sunday, both are fine for a meetup.

A little over a mile's walk along the beach there's this to check out - the photo they chose is pretty plain, but the "secret cove" sounds interesting. And Cascade Head is also nearby if we feel like a more challenging (and steep!) hike.

I wish we could have secured a pet-friendly location, but our options were limited and rental availability was shrinking quickly. Considering we talked a lot but didn't get off the ground last year, I think we are improving overall.
posted by mimo at 3:41 PM on April 30, 2014

Also, I will double-check to see if pets are okay on the porch/deck area. That way if someone wanted to bring their dog for a day at the beach, they could, though they'd have to stay outside. (Which means we'd have to hang outside with them too, who's a good dog, who loves the beach, yes you do)

Based on the description of that house (i know it's not much!) I feel like I was just at that house about two weeks ago. Weird.

I remotely possibly could go, but put me at the last of any attendance list if this starts filling up. Any chance you could memail me the address though, just so i can confirm or deny my suspicion?

So, was it a good time? Was it horrible? Like, is the house haunted or something?

I'll be all moved away from Portland by this time which gives me a big sad. I can't go but I will pour one out for you guys. And by pour one out I mean I will drink scotch from the bottle while sitting next to a pot full of salt water thinking about the ocean.

Welllll I had a kind of awesome going away drunkening with many of you the last time I left Portland, and I kind feel like you can only milk the leaving town thing so much, so I don't know if a going away party explicitly per se is totally a necessary thing, but I would be much in favor of a June get together at Greg's house so I can see all your beautiful faces before I head for the Great Corn Sea.

So does anyone have any thoughts on whether Friday, Saturday, or Sunday night would be best for the official-meetup? I'm leaning towards Saturday but Monday is a holiday and hopefully no one has to go into work on, you know, Labor Day. So Sunday is fine too.
posted by curious nu at 7:51 PM on May 5, 2014

Either Saturday or Sunday is fine with me.

I don't think prices have been mentioned here yet. Maybe set up a spreadsheet so we can coordinate who's sleeping where, when?
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:09 PM on May 5, 2014

I hear that money is being discussed offline, which makes total sense in retrospect, and means that as usual I'm being an uncultured lout.

In that case, maybe somewhere down the line we can coordinate food planning instead of sleeping arrangements.
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:28 PM on May 5, 2014

After further consultation Greg is totally right and I should've put costs up front. I have edited the main post to reflect that!

Again, if you're interested in some nights, please memail me and let me know. =)

Also, I'm just going to go ahead and set this as confirmed for Sunday night. This is still over 3 months away so if we decide to make it a different night, that's not a big deal. =p

We don't get the address to the house until 72 hours prior to check in (because.. buh?) so the address is the downtown Portland library. I figure that'll give enough time for anyone looking for PDX-area IRL notifications to see this, and then carpools can be planned as necessary.

This may be a tad early, but it just occurred to me and I didn't want to forget to ask: Do we want to coordinate on meals and/or dining out? Go with Every Person For Themselves? Some combination thereof? Apparently the place has both an equipped kitchen and a grill, and I for one would be willing to be (co-) responsible for a dinner. For instance, we could buy fresh seafood and make a kick-ass bouillabaisse or grilled tuna steaks or something.

Relatedly: Does anyone own a fondue set? I have fond (ooh!) memories of a past beach house get-together during which we ate like kings and queens, including a session of dipping various appropriate food bits (fruit, biscotti, pound cake, etc.) in a melted chocolate concoction!
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:36 PM on July 26, 2014

We probably will want at least one communal grill meal. I thought one big breakfast would be nice too; maybe Sunday morning.

Do we need to discuss carpooling? I would love to carpool.
posted by vespabelle at 12:11 PM on July 27, 2014

I like the carpooling idea. I can either chip in for gas, or drive (my car would comfortably fit 4 people and their gear).
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:37 PM on July 27, 2014

I own fondue forks, and I may still have some sterno someplace, but I have no fondue pot or rack to balance a pot on. In the past I've just heated up some chocolate or cheese on the stove then put it on a hot pad on the table, and just reheated on the stove whenever it got too thick. It's not exactly as convenient or classy as a fondue pot, but it turns out that for me this is easier than storing and never using a fondue set (which is what I also tried for a while). So if nobody has a set, we could try that.

I'm into the idea of shared meals and shared cooking/shopping responsibilities. Breakfast would probably be the one meal where we aren't all going to agree on the timing, but I don't think I've ever been sad to wake up to find breakfast already cooked (or, cooking breakfast and getting to eat it while it's hot).
posted by Secretariat at 6:55 PM on July 27, 2014

Well, I went nuts and snagged an inexpensive electric fondue set (and extra forks) on Ebay. So there that is. What the hell; I've got storage space for it, and I'm keen to try that recipe I linked to upthread.
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:10 PM on July 27, 2014

Since we can only have three vehicle on site, carpooling is a must. I'm not sure if that's only overnight or what we will do if people come for a day trip.

I think a communal grill meal and group breakfast are good. I don't eat seafood for allergy reasons and Nick doesn't do crab so something non-fish would have to be on hand.

"Dude, come on in, we've got plenty of bouillabaisse cooking."

"No! Nasty hot stove ruins the fishes!"

You have no idea.
posted by mimo at 8:17 AM on July 31, 2014

There's nothing wrong with a two protein meal. Depending on how severe allergies are we could even plan to cook one protein in the kitchen and the other on the grill (or I guess only consumed while chest deep in the brine, in the name of the drowned god), or something like that.

If I brought a chunk of dark chocolate to melt for a non-dairy chocolate fondue option, would others be interested? I guess the worst case scenario is that I'll have leftover chocolate.
posted by Secretariat at 8:49 PM on July 31, 2014

Regarding non-dairy chocolate fondue options: in the recipe I finally came up with, cream of coconut (or almond or rice milk) and a little coconut (or safflower?) oil could be substituted for the heavy cream and butter. The remaining ingredients - besides chocolate! - are vanilla extract and a pinch of kosher salt, which I think won't pose any dietary problems but of course speak up if necessary.

And at our option, we could add to the mix a few tablespoons of brandy, dark rum, or liqueur such as chocolate (Godiva), hazelnut (Frangelico), almond (amaretto), orange (Grand Marnier), or coffee (Kahlúa).

Suggested dipping foods:
- Fruit (banana slices, strawberries, pineapple chunks, raspberries, grapes, orange wedges)
- Starches (graham crackers, pretzels, potato chips, pound cake, biscotti, banana bread, shortbread-based cookies)
- Sweets (caramels, marshmallows, cheesecake, brownies, candied orange peel)
- Bacon
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:35 PM on July 31, 2014

For what it's worth, I also have a cheese fondue recipe consisting of Swiss and Gruyere cheese, white wine, a bit of cherry brandy, and an optional dash of nutmeg, if anyone's interested.

Suggested dipping foods:
- Cubes of French and pumpernickel breads
- Granny Smith apples
- Vegetables (ex. blanched broccoli/cauliflower/carrots/asparagus, boiled red potatoes)
- Small dill pickles
- Slices of salami or other cured charcuterie
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:41 PM on July 31, 2014

I'm up for alternate milks but I don't want to deny anyone creamy richness (although coconut is pretty rich too!). We could even experiment with a variety of recipes with different ingredients.

On another topic:

I'm thinking the best day for an "open house" would be Saturday afternoon/evening; we're leaving Monday morning and doing last-minute clean-up is not the most fun thing in the world.

I'm also thinking (if mods and everyone else are okay with it) of posting a metatalk thread, since not everyone pays attention to IRL threads. Does that sound alright?

LESS THAN A MONTH UNTIL PARTY TIMES, PEOPLE.
posted by curious nu at 5:16 PM on August 1, 2014

On further thought, I'm leaning against metatalk; some of the reasons include a) parking is already probably going to be a problem, and b) anyone who's too iffy to drive might have difficulty finding a place to crash. So maybe this first year we'll just keep it moderate and see how it goes.
posted by curious nu at 7:53 PM on August 1, 2014

Although additional peoples are welcome for a gathering, too many additional peoples may be problematic given the apparent high-strung nature of the rental property owners. We could consider a separate post here or MetaTalk once we have sussed out the location and determined a specific gathering time and location. We still don't know the exact location of the rental. Maybe we could propose a second gathering at a nearby picnic area or on the beach.

Did we officially decide how to split up meal responsibilities? I was thinking of doing something like bringing or making a quiche or two to share for a breakfast or lunch. Would a spreadsheet be ok, or would people rather wing it?
posted by Secretariat at 11:47 AM on August 16, 2014

So if we can only have three cars on site for the overnight guests, I think that restricts our carpooling options quite a bit. If I have this right:

Arriving Friday (2 cars):
curious nu
mimo
Greg_Ace
Secretariat
cortex
Sibrax (+1)

Arriving Saturday (1 car):
fiercekitten
nickthetourist
vespabelle

We live the farthest out, so I think it makes sense for us to drive. We can take 2 other people, maybe 3, from the first batch.

I think a spreadsheet of things food-related and otherwise of things people are bringing would be helpful. Has everyone staying over seen the listing? Here's a food etc. spreadsheet. The first tab is meals, the second tab is a per-meal guestlist (so if you're cooking, you can estimate how many people you might be cooking for) and the third tab is for whatever other stuff should be listed. Does that make sense?

My thought was that people could remove or add themselves for group meals as desired. The count on the main tab updates automatically. By default, I put everyone who is staying overnight as present for breakfast and dinner, and nobody as present for lunch. I assumed rabbitrabbit and inkytea would come over on Saturday. (Which is not to say you're not welcome at other times- but check in and see if anyone is around, in case we all went for a walk on the beach or something.)

I can bring a bucket for sure (if I have to, I'll pack my clothes in it or wear it on my head or something) but I don't have any sort of a small or folding shovel. Are we talking about a trowel? I can bring a trowel.
posted by Secretariat at 2:23 PM on August 22, 2014

Actually, after re-reading the page I linked to upthread, I guess we don't need a shovel for burying the fire, just a bucket for water to douse it. Unless you just want to bring the trowel to build sandcastles, of course!

Sibrax+1 are bringing a game that sounds like fun. Nu and I are bringing some light games. Does anyone have Pictionary or Cranium? Something like that might be fun, or we could just do old-school charades. I think a lot is going to depend on the weather and what we feel like doing on the spur of the moment. Currently, it looks like it may actively rain on Saturday, which may mean more inside time if it's raining hard. Also, we are planning on bringing a Jurassic Park for movie night.

Along with the actual fondue sauce ingredients, I'm bringing bananas, Tabrizi bread cubes, and Granny Smith apple slices for chocolate and cheese fondue dipping. But I'd like to request that people bring additional dippables, depending on what they wish to indulge in. Suggestions below:

For chocolate fondue:
- Fruit (ex. strawberries, pineapple chunks, raspberries, grapes, orange wedges)
- Starches (Graham crackers, pretzels, potato chips, pound cake, biscotti, banana bread, shortbread-based cookies)
- Sweets (caramels, marshmallows, cheesecake, brownies, candied orange peel)
- Pieces of cooked bacon

For cheese fondue:
- Cubes of pumpernickel bread
- Cut vegetables (ex. blanched broccoli/cauliflower/carrots/asparagus, boiled red potatoes)
- Small dill pickles
- Slices of salami or other cured charcuterie

I think pineapple sounds awesome in either chocolate or cheese.

Cortex was talking about maybe running a Fiasco game. Not sure if that's still on the table?

Sure! I'm up for giving it a shot. Short version is it's a pen-and-paper role-playing game that's mostly just collaborative story-telling, with everybody collectively brainstorming the plot and character details of a plan-gone-wrong sort of heist/neo-noir/etc film. Coen Brothers Film: The Game, seems to be the big inspiration for the folks who wrote it. Here's their website, which has a little bit about it.

I've never run it before but think it's the sort of thing that would work pretty well for our particular beer-and-bullshitting meetup vibe; it's really light on rules and heavy on coming up with entertaining or silly shit as a group.

Anybody who's interested, feel free to drop me an email and I can give you more details so you can have a better idea of what the deal is. With the minimal rules it's not something where everybody playing needs to have read through the rulebook ahead of time but it'd probably help if at least a couple other people besides me have so that there's a little more shared understanding of the basic mechanics. The game doesn't technically have a GM, everybody's just a player, but the folks who know how it's supposed to work will be able to help facilitate it so it runs more smoothy I figure.

I had a blast! Thanks to all.

I've posted a short-list of group and interesting pics (see link at top). Many more artsy ones to come later, but it'll be a while for me to go through the post-processing...process. I'll try to make sure everyone gets notified when those are finally up.
