Trek in the Park: The Trouble with Tribbles

Sun August 18 at 4:30 PM, Cathedral Park Amphitheater
North Edison Street & North Pittsburg Avenue, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
This year is the final episode of Trek in the Park! Performances are every Saturday and Sunday at 5pm. We're planning to go on Sunday, 8/18. Want to join us?
The trouble with Tribbles is a pretty great episode (someone even made a cheesy video about it) and I'm excited to see it performed live! Here's some more info about Trek in the Park:

If the weather is hot, you may want to bring things like an umbrella, a hat, water, and sunblock, as the performance area is pretty exposed. If I remember right from last year, low chairs were ok, but if you have a taller chair, you might have to fold it before the show starts so you don't block the view for others.

If you can't attend on 8/18 but are still planning to see this (and you aren't planning on attending the beach meetup) I'd recommend 8/24, when our friends' geek girl band The Doubleclicks is performing.

I'll be there with a group of friends and will establish ourselves nearby and/or say hi and/or wave across the sea of nerds.

Oh, no way... sounds like Garrett Wang (Harry Kim from Voyager!) is going to have a cameo in the show on the 18th! Or am I a super nerd for being excited about that?

probably a super nerd

Hmm, wonder if this one will be more crowded because of that. Might want to get there earlier?

I was thinking I'd show up around 2pm or earlier with chairs and umbrellas and such and try to reserve a couple blankets worth of space. If all else fails, it sounds like it's generally pretty easy for individuals or pairs to scootch in and find good seats- you just have to get there early if you want to have a group sit together in a good location.

Garrett Wang showed up last year too, so it's not that unprecedented- I just didn't hear about it last year until after it happened. And they hinted that someone else cool is going to be there on Saturday, and next weekend there's live music... so I don't know if it will be any worse than any other day.

I'm my customary "maybe."

How will we find each other in the sea of nerdery?

Well, once we're there, we'll post an update on the location (center, side, next to the snocones, whatever). We'll have something extra eye catching- a red parasol or blue mefi t-shirt, probably.

Mefi pennant mounted on an aerial?

For "omg where are you guys" purposes folks can text me when they get there if they're looking over a sea of people and don't notice us: 503 516 7365 and we can wave something.

We're gonna head down in just a little bit and stake out a spot while the staking's good; as of 45 minutes ago or so there were a dozen hardcores already camped out right in the sweet front row area but we're expecting to be able to grab some pretty good position this early still. If you want to come down early and chill out (read: bake in the sun) with us, bring an umbrella and head on over.

Aaaand here we are: spot claimed. We may actually be hiding in the shade nearby off and on, but there's three blankets, two low blue chairs, two larger green chairs, a little cooler and a bright blue mefi shirt.

It's about a hundred feet back from the stage, just to the right of the center lane.

On our way! We're bringing homemade ginger beer, lemon yerba mate, and ice.

Won't make it to Trek.
What are the plans for after?

None specifically, but who knows. Upside: St. Johns is right here. Downside: a thousand other people may be thinking that as well.

Definitely update the thread with any post-show plans!

We're here with our two greyhounds! But we are hiding back in the shade. Say hi if you see us walking around, otherwise we'll try to find you guys post-show.

Ack! I see you but the show's starting. We're on the other side of the aisle from the mefi group, next to the sound guy's desk. (we were the ones whose tent blew over :{ )

We are headed to Plews in St Johns for beers.

That was a hoot. One of my favorite parts was the opera singer for the intro.

And the blue tribble on the bartender's head.

And the endless tribbles. OK, I'll stop. :)

Every time I thought we'd reached the final tribble: MORE TRIBBLES!

Thanks to Cortex and Secretariat for staking out the excellent spot early!

And we're done at Plews. Late stragglers are officially drinking alone!

It was a great show! Sorry I missed some of you. But I did see that tent blow over- that was exciting. Exciting enough that we recounted the story later. It's like I know a celebrity!

What's the group noun for tribbles? A ubiquity? An incessance?
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:19 PM on August 18, 2013

A fecundity.

A tribbulation!

Surely it's a trouble of tribbles?

Tossed up some photos! Mostly of crowd and show, but there's a couple quick snaps of us late in the set.
