Sat April 13 at 6:00 PM, Devil Craft
Japan, Tokyo, Chuo, Nihonbashimuromachi, 4丁目2−3 (Map & Directions)
We had a very pleasant meetup last year. Feel like doing it again? I'm scheduled to be in Yokosuka again from April 7th to 27th so that's two possible weekends in that timespan.
OK, we have
date: April 13th
time: 6pm-?
location: Devil Craft

Please make sure you mark your "Attending" status if you're showing up as Ghidorah has kindly made a reservation of the party space for the group.

Detailed directions to the restaurant are in the link above.

I'd love to meet up, but I don't know that I can do much to help organize. Saturday nights should be all right, but other than that, it's right at the beginning of the school year, and things will be a bit hectic. Where are you staying this time?

I might actually be able to show up to this one, depending on when and where it ends up being held. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. If I do come, though, forgive me if I sit there without saying much, because I honestly haven't spoken a word of English since...well, since the last meetup I went to in 2011!

As of right now I'm wide open for both weekends, and would love to see you again, Runes, not to mention the rest of you lowlife Tokyo bums! (Actually, misozaki, you're not a lowlife, just the rest of 'em!)

Chances are good that there will be one or two gigs booked for me as the dates get a little nearer, but, yeah, right now it's all open, so I'll just keep an eye on this thread and see who else shows up and why their schedules look like. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu!

More lowlife checking in here ... This might be OK for me too (although not down in Yokosuka.)

And it was funny to see over on the right column, that 23 people were on the 'maybe' list ... or so I thought, until I clicked to see who they all were ...

Hey, you're coming back Runes? Very cool! I'm embarrassed 'cause I haven't made it to a Tokyo meetup since you were here last...doh. Seriously, I am a lowlife bum flapjax, 'cause I STILL haven't made it to one of your gigs among other things. *sob*

But I should have time in that period, so I'm definitely interested. I can try to help organize too if need be. And I should be able to go wherever in the Tokyo metro. area.

I'm hoping to start a conversation about Lisp again with you, I really enjoyed that (among other conversations we had...).

And I hope I can finally meet the mysterious fluent-in-English-hangs-out-on-metafilter 主婦 Misozaki...

EDIT: Er, I just clicked "YES" on attending but I guess we don't know when it is yet.

I may be able to make it to this one... nothing on the two weekends right now. Sadly I haven't been to another meetup after you came last year either :( so I'll try my best to show up for this!

Hey, just head over to Mefi Music, dubitable, there's something I just posted yesterday, from a gig I did in Shimokita just this past weekend. Metafilter Music: next best thing to being there!

In order to lure woodblock100 out from his lovely studio in Ome, we should probably make this take place somewhere along the Chuo Line!

Hey, no need to humour me by moving out this way - anywhere 'in town' would be fine by me. (I was just reluctant to sign on to a meetup out Yokosuka way, because that's kind of too far to get back in the evening ...)
posted by woodblock100 at 6:30 AM on March 15, 2013

Well, last time Runes was here, we met up in Ueno. I don't think it's a problem for him to come to Tokyo particularly, and I think it would be unlikely that any of us Tokyo folks would be able to do a Yokosuka thing.

lowlife here.

Hope to make it but need to know specifics before I can confirm.
posted by gen at 6:42 AM on March 15, 2013

I'll be in Yokosuka but had no problem getting to/from Ueno last time. Weekends work better if it's more than an hour away from Yokosuka since I'd rather spend the time visiting with y'all than riding the train or worrying about whether I'll miss the last connection from Yokohama.

I should have been more clear in the announcement, I am *not* suggesting we meet in Yokosuka. Just somewhere I can get to from there without too much pain.

So, to try to make this a more concrete:

We've got two possible weekends.

April 13 (Sat) - 14th, and 20th (Sat) - 21st.

It sounds like Saturday evening is good for Ghidorah and probably myself as well. How does that sit with everyone else? I can also do the Fridays before (12th or 19th), but maybe Saturday is best? If that is true, do folks have a preference for the 13th over the 20th or vice versa?

As far as location, sounds like we have folks coming from all directions, so maybe central-ish is best? But I don't know what that means for folks. If we are doing Chuo, what about, um, Shinjuku-ish? Or Yoyogi/Harajuku? Is that terrible for people? Ghidorah, is that killer for you? I think you'll be coming from the farthest east if I recall.
posted by dubitable at 3:01 AM on March 16, 2013

Ueno is fine for me too, just to confirm. I'm worried it may be very far for woodblock100 though, if he's coming all the way from Ome. But maybe Ueno works?
posted by dubitable at 3:02 AM on March 16, 2013

Ueno not a problem at all for me. The Ome trains start at Tokyo Station, so that's where I prefer to begin my homeward journey - that way I can (usually) sit down, which I can't do if I get on at Shinjuku ...

I'm good pretty much anywhere around Tokyo. Shibuya isn't too far, though I kind of like the Yurakucho/Tokyo/Ueno area. I'm a little partial to the earlier weekend, but either are fine with me. There are a couple places that might be worth checking out in Kanda, but are a little pricey.

There's Tokyo Butchers (which I've only seen from afar), and Devil Craft which does a pretty good Chicago-style pizza in addition to having really, really good beer. (there's also a really cool, tiny little Hawaiian place right near there that's way too small for a meet-up, but they serve delicious ox-tail soup, if that's your thing, and you're in the neighborhood)

Other than that, I don't know much about places to go in Tokyo, and I'm up for anything.
posted by Ghidorah at 4:33 PM on March 16, 2013

Okay, unless we have any further objections (23, misozaki, monocot, gen, anyone else?), shall we say

April 13 (Sat), somewhere in Ueno

...how's that sit with you folks?

I'd love to make it to that Irish pub you showed us last time (but I think we weren't able to enter if I recall), flapjax. But, we can think about that later as the evening progresses...
posted by dubitable at 8:27 AM on March 17, 2013

Those places both look awesome Ghidorah. How far is Kanda from Ueno? I'm a bit crap with Tokyo geography (still)...
posted by dubitable at 8:28 AM on March 17, 2013

April 13 (Sat), somewhere in Ueno

4/13 sounds fine to me. And Kanda, to answer your question, dubitable, is just 2 stops down (on the Yamanote line) from Ueno, very close. It's also a Chuo line stop, which might be good for others. Plus plus!

As far as the Irish pub in Ueno, that was my first and last time there (at our meet up) and I have no special fondness for it or anything. We can maybe find something in Kanda, instead, if we're gonna chow in Kanda.
posted by flapjax at midnite at 3:13 PM on March 17, 2013

Ghidorah's suggestion of Devil Craft in Kanda sounds good I think, for the 13th. Their website says that they take reservations, and that they have room for a dozen or so people up on the third floor. If we got a head count, it looks like we could get ourselves a nice comfortable (and tasty) place for our meet up ...
posted by woodblock100 at 4:47 PM on March 17, 2013

With Devil Craft, reservations are absolutely a must. Mrs. Ghidorah and I went there without, just two people, and we had to wait about thirty minutes to get a table. It's usually pretty packed out.

And yes, reservations for Devil Craft are a must, especially for anything more than two people. (There's also Pizzakaya in Roppongi or the Nakameguro Taproom if we want to keep the craft beer and pizza theme.)

And 23, thanks for coming to the blues gig the other night, it was great to see you there!

Thank you, flapjax! It was a great show and I'm glad I know where What The Dickens is now.

Unrelated, but is the Pizzakaya good? I only heard of it a week or two ago.
posted by 23 at 6:10 AM on March 18, 2013

Do we have enough of a consensus to set a time and move this from proposed? BTW, if y'all are picking a pizza/beer place because you've got a visiting American, I'm more than comfortable eating Japanese food and drinking sake. It looks like the last train south would be around 22:30 with a fallback to 22:50 so that sort of caps the top end of the timescale.
posted by Runes at 2:45 PM on March 18, 2013

BTW, if y'all are picking a pizza/beer place because you've got a visiting American

Probably not that, Runes. More like it's just an easy place that Ghidorah knew, that has room for us, and all that. Would you strongly prefer a Japanese place, or is pizza and beer OK?
posted by flapjax at midnite at 3:14 PM on March 18, 2013

Pizza and beer is fine. Just want to make sure y'all weren't accommodating me. I will admit that after the last time finding some place that takes reservations is a big win.
posted by Runes at 3:39 PM on March 18, 2013

Given Runes's relatively early cutoff time, how does a somewhat earlier start sound to everybody? Like, maybe 6pm, say?
posted by flapjax at midnite at 4:05 PM on March 18, 2013

a somewhat earlier start

/hand goes up ...
posted by woodblock100 at 4:16 PM on March 18, 2013

6 in Kanda is doable for me. And, honestly, I was just thinking of a decent place I knew of, which, when it comes to Tokyo, really isn't much. Given how busy the place is, we should really do our best to get a solid number of who's in and how many seats we'll need.

I, too, am okay with an earlier start. It makes the possibility of a second drinking more likely.
posted by Ghidorah at 4:31 PM on March 18, 2013

This is great. So, it seems like we've got a 'yea' vote for

6:00 PM on Saturday, April 13th at Devil Craft

from:

Runes
flapjax
Ghidora
misozaki
woodblock100
armage
23
dubitable

with a 'maybe' for

monocot
gen

did I miss anyone?

So, we'll be looking at a 8-10 person reservation.

Should we set a cut off date, just to keep the reservation manageable? Although I suspect we could do 10 now and if people drop before then it won't be too hard...
posted by dubitable at 5:59 PM on March 18, 2013

With 8-10 we could nearly take over an entire floor of Devil Craft. I suggest we make a reservation for 10 as soon as possible to hold our place, since it will get increasingly hard to make a reservation for that many.
posted by armage at 6:22 PM on March 18, 2013

Yeah, we should definitely reserve soon, possibly today. 10 sounds good.
posted by Ghidorah at 6:36 PM on March 18, 2013

Ghidorah, will you do us the honors of making the reservation? I will bring you a Special Gift in exchange for this service.
posted by flapjax at midnite at 8:31 PM on March 18, 2013

Ten people, 4/13, from 6 pm, reservation has been made. On Saturdays, they get a lot of business, so we have a 2.5 hour limit, which should be okay if we want to find a second place to fight off any lingering sobriety.

They did recommend Pre-ordering pizzas for a big group. I held off on that, since I've got no idea what all people would want. They asked that we call and let them know by at least the day before (4/12). So, I guess, take a look at the menu and see what looks good.
posted by Ghidorah at 11:14 PM on March 18, 2013

They have two basic sizes of pizza, personal size, with four slices, and large, which has eight slices. Mrs. Ghidorah and I got a large Abe Froman when we went, and there was a good amount leftover. Maybe four pizzas? It depends on how hungry everyone is.

Take a look at the menu. The Abe Froman was pretty good, and I've heard good things about the Meatzza. We can organize some sort of feats of strength style contest to figure out what to order, or we could do something boring and grown-up, like rationally discuss our options and come to a consensus.
posted by Ghidorah at 11:41 PM on March 18, 2013

what to order ...

Is this the kind of place where we could just turn it over to them? Give them a basic budget (per head) and just let them feed us? (We order our own drinks separately ...)
posted by woodblock100 at 11:45 PM on March 18, 2013

I've checked their site, and they don't seem to have a party menu. It didn't really seem like that sort of place when I went, but I'm pretty sure all the stuff is good. Do we have any vegetarians? Allergies? Dire hatreds?

I have a condition where if I eat chickpeas I may be sad or compelled to take revenge, but otherwise anything's fine.

Meat is good.

Bergamot and Penicillin would also present problems but if you're putting those on the pizza we have bigger things to worry about.

Sweet, thanks Ghidorah! And for me it's a solid "no" on the presence of food allergies/dislikes/etc. In fact, I actually enjoy anchovy pizza...

But seriously, if we want to pre-order we can just pick stuff and you can count me in. I imagine I will eat in the 3-4 slice range. If it was put to a vote, I like having a variety of both pizza w/veggies and some stuff that is more meaty or whatever, but I'll be happy no matter what.
posted by dubitable at 9:31 PM on March 19, 2013

Oh, I said 3-4 slices before realizing we're talking Chicago here. Maybe more like 1-2 then? Not sure, but Ghidorah, 4 pies sounds good based on your assessment, huh?

But, oh well. I failed to notice this thread until Runes pointed it out to me.
SEE YOU AT DEVILCRAFT.
For the record, I have an inordinately large number of hated foods, but the meatzilla shall be more than good for me. Perhaps even...it looks, even, FANTASTIC for me. I'm looking forward to this!

Heh heh! Actually, ctmf, I keep the live schedule pretty well updated. But I'm hardly doing any shows this month and next: down to about 3 or so a month as opposed to my more usual 8 to 10. I'm leaving more time open this spring for recording, solo and group stuff. It's time for me to get some new CDs out into the world.

There is one show coming up later this month, 4/23, at this really cool little Nigerian restaurant bar run by an amenable chap named Esogie, from Benin City, Nigeria, my old stomping grounds way back in 1980/81. I recommend the food there, very authentic Nigerian fare, and of course the music that night will be *ahem* spectacular.

Yeah, the 'long table' thing is not such a great setup. I think there is a real opportunity here for some smart restauranteur to set up a place where a dozen or so people can get together to eat/drink/communicate properly.

I can imagine a space that has a small 'standing bar' where food would be placed, and where we would get drinks, and with a few (not enough) seats nearby. The patrons would mix among themselves during the time they were there ... stand sometimes, sit sometimes, and they would all get a chance to see/talk with everybody else at some point.

Come to think of it, I guess that sounds like a description of an old-style English pub ...

Anyway, I had a pleasant time getting reacquainted with the folks down at the west end of the table; maybe next time I can do the same with the people at the other end!

There will be PHOTOS

Is that a promise or a threat?

It was great meeting everyone (again, for some)! We've definitely got to do this more than once a year...

I had a wonderful time. Thanks, everyone! Remember, y'all can have meetups even when I'm not visiting.

Great pics of some great folks! Thanks for the pics, flapjax, those look so much better than the few I shot on my iPhone...

Thanks for the great time, everyone! It was great to meet all of you and plot the destruction of mankind (or immanetizing the eschaton, if you prefer). We should definitely do this again before another year goes by.

Come to think of it, I guess that sounds like a description of an old-style English pub ...

Yeah, that was basically the setup of the Jha bar we went to afterwards. There actually is a really good pizza place (聖林館/Seirinkan in Nakameguro) that is set up a bit like that as well.

If schedules mesh, I would still love to have you guys over for a bbq some time this summer. Somewhere between July 20th and August 25th. I'm all for meeting up before then, though. It's too much fun to do this sort of thing once a year.

That's pretty much how BBQs go at Chez Ghidorah. I feed you, you get me drunk. That, or BYOB, and bring a bag of ice to toss in the cooler. I hope we can make it work this year.

We've GOT to make it work, Ghid. The fate of Chiba and in fact ALL OF KANTO depends on it.
