Tue March 26 at 2:00 PM, Trailer Park Lounge
271 West 23rd Street, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
I am going to be in Manhattan for four hours or so on Tuesday, March 26. (It's a long story involving really stupid travel logistics and the avoidance thereof.) I know some of y'all NYC people have flexible schedules - come meet me for tater tots/burgers/beer!
I get in to Penn Station around 1:30, and I need to be at JFK by 6:30 or 7 at the latest. I don't necessarily need to be amused by other people for that entire time, but I'd be delighted to see whoever shows up - I am not sure yet that I'll be back in NYC this year.

Whoa just saw this. And Your train must just be coming in. I'm a few subway stops away from Penn and could do Lunch or whatever.

I just posted it? It's in two weeks, not today.

Oh I-
..wow second time this week I've made that mistake.

So I tenetively agree for this in two weeks.

Hah! Excellent.

I am in favor of lunch. Not sure what's convenient & non-sucky right around Penn Station, but there's all the Korean restaurants on 32nd Street an Avenue over.
posted by oh yeah! at 5:03 PM on March 14, 2013

If you go two quick stops north on the express 2-3 line you hit a lot more non sucky places ( patsy's!) and then you could look at dinosaurs at the History museum.

Ooo or go to the New York historical society which I only mention cause I kind of live there.

Damn! Missing you again.

Whoa I just saw this. I'll be right there.

I could try-- I'll be on a mini-vacation that week, but I do have an appointment literally across town from Penn Station at 4, so I could do anything on the earlier side.

My votes are for the Ginger Man or this oyster bar in the Ace Hotel. Just so I can justify drinking a beer with my long lunch.
posted by Potomac Avenue at 1:52 PM on March 15, 2013

There's a certain deep irony to going to a transplanted Texas bar while visiting NYC, but I'm not picky.
posted by restless_nomad at 2:43 PM on March 15, 2013

I can't make it but feel free to drop by my place of work (12th street and Broadway) to say hello.
posted by jonmc at 6:56 PM on March 15, 2013

I'm not far from Penn and will try to drop by for lunch. I don't know the area, but am open for almost anything.
posted by Hactar at 7:42 PM on March 15, 2013

I would like to try to make it!
posted by mlle valentine at 6:16 PM on March 17, 2013

So right now the only named locations are the Ginger Man, that oyster bar, and Patsy's. I vote against the Ginger Man because I'm going to want actual food. Thoughts? Other suggestions?

Penn Station doesn't have a lot of cool things near it sadly. Fancy things and sketchy things mostly.
posted by Potomac Avenue at 8:52 AM on March 18, 2013

I am totally happy going somewhere other than Penn Station, with the caveat that the further I go from access to the E line, the earlier I have to leave. (And the further south, the earlier, but another couple of stops is less a big deal than having to take a separate line/walk many blocks.)
posted by restless_nomad at 10:45 AM on March 18, 2013

Let's define our terms,

Actual Food

2-3 stops near the E in either direction.

THere's a Shake Shack near the ANHM

Is it going to be snowing? Because I am not getting outdoor food if it's fucking snowing.

Everything i have have suggested is resolutely indoors.

Ok, then I am thinking of a different thing on 23rd. I like tater tots. Any other thoughts?

Ok, I am so sold. How the hell have I not been there, anyway? That is the only block in NYC I ever visit. (...Seriously. It's actually a little sad.)

if it helps when my SO was there he asked what wine they had and they said

"red white and pink".

Awesome. So, does this generally work for people? I'll set it to confirmed this evening if I don't get dissenting votes.
posted by restless_nomad at 11:06 AM on March 19, 2013

Sure!

According to Google, I work 10 minutes from here. That means 40ish minutes to hang out with people, although I will need food as well. How long does it take from ordering food to it arriving there?
posted by Hactar at 11:13 PM on March 22, 2013

In my experience, depends on how busy they are but it's all short order stuff anyway so fairly quick.

Hi! I don't have any lunch plans today so I'll drop by for some eats! 2pm, yes? Can you please update the thread if the time changes because of travel delay?

My train is on time thus far; I'll definitely let y'all know if that changes, but you're certainly welcome to get started without me.

restless_nomad, how are you getting to JFK? I just booked some travel for next week, and it turns out that because of the short time frame I need to go to the airport in person in advance to redeem a travel voucher. If you are planning on taking a cab I'd happily split it with you.
posted by unannihilated at 7:16 AM on March 26, 2013

I was planning to take the subway - we can chat about cabs though, I may be persuadable.
