NYC Area Hiking Meetup, Redux

Sun March 24 at 8:00 AM, Computech_Apolloniajames' Place
552 Riverside Drive, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Yeah, it's winter, and sure it's cold, but I wanna go hiking! With you. And possibly eat donuts.
Same deal as last time: meet at my place, pile into the car(s), drive to a trailhead, walk, eat sandwiches. All suggestions on a location are welcome. Did I mention the donuts we had last time?

Anybody? How about March 16 or March 24? I prefer Saturdays, but I can do either weekend day.

UPDATE: Confirmed for March 16. Rain/snow date March 23.

UPDATED UPDATE: Rescheduled for March 24.

I am down with this.

March 16th works best for me, but if there is snow, I am skiing and it is pointless to plan around me.

So basically don't count me as part of the critical mass to get the ball rolling. But if I can make it, I would like to go hiking with metafilter peoples.

I would be in for March 17, 23, or 24.

How long of a hike? I like hiking but I am in lousy shape.

I would not plan anything long or ambitious at this time of year. Two or three hours tops. I am going to do some work avoidance later today (yay bosses out of the country this week) and read up on area hikes.

I'd be up for joining too. I was up at Breakneck a few weeks ago and it was beautiful, but I'm guessing it's too icy now unless you have the right equipment. Will look at conditions at a few places this week and see if I can throw out any suggestions.

I like donuts.

Hmm I'm intrigued but while I have hiking experience I'm strictly bunny slopes right now.

I'm in, but don't know why we need to wait until March. I was hiking at the Delaware Water Gap last weekend and it was perfectly "warm enough".

I spend a lot of time in the trails around Northern Jersey and the Gunx (note to anyone with a car -- I have guest passes for Mohonk Preserve), but the distance to the better hiking areas is far enough that two or three hours might not be enough to make the trip worthwhile.

My usual hike would be around 10 miles plus or minus "some" - in bad weather, Wawayanda (NJ) or the Weis Center are ideal. In middling weather, upgrade to Terrace Pond, Bearfort Ridge. In great weather, just hit the Thruway and get to Mohonk. Scratch that, Mohonk is great in the ice, too.....

Of the two dates, I can only do the 16th though.

I'd be up for it but I am by no means an expert ihker.

We did a moderate (medium difficulty) trail at Storm King Mountain last time- (although we also got magnificently turned around and probably did some of the harder stuff and the rock scramble is not something I would want to do in winter with potential ice about).

Perhaps we could do a sort of "beginner" hiking excursion? that (eventually) ends in donuts? more of a 2-3 hr amble than a real hike?

I'd def. be down for that- I like getting people excited for outside stuff, even if I personally tend to prefer a more vigorous walk.

A second person saying that "I could handle winter weather", actually. Around New Year's I was doing a lot of hiking in Utah - simpler hikes, for the most part - in 20-degree weather for a couple hours at a time, in sneakers. Even slipping and stepping ankle-deep into a stream didn't stop me.

Something to consider though - how are we getting there? Public transport or using a car?
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 7:49 AM on February 6, 2013

My car, and others if needed.
posted by computech_apolloniajames at 5:53 AM on February 8, 2013

I would come up from Philly for this, especially on a Saturday. I wouldn't be able to help with the car situation, though. I only started hiking last summer but I've done enough 10-ish mile hikes with decent elevation that I should be good with whatever hike the group decides on.

Since there are two votes for March 16, I will make that the date and finalize it by tomorrow. I chose dates in March as to avoid the coldest weather (also, I already have commitments for most Saturdays so far this month, and I usually swim on Sundays). As far as difficulty level, we'll let the group turnout and weather guide that decision.

Interested; either date I think.

Oops, this conflicts with Metafilter Boardgames, so I will miss out.

Bummer, Grobstein! Nobody has RSVP'd yet, so should I reschedule for another date, such as March 24?

Nobody has RSVP'd yet

Wha? I didn't know this had switched from a "proposed" to an "actual." Maybe that's why there were no RSVP's?

I'm previously committed to the board games. Unless we went hiking and brought board games. I'd also like to note that interesting weather and board games meetup dates tend to coincide.
posted by sciencegeek at 2:13 PM on February 20, 2013

Yeah, being on the day of the boardgame meetup is an issue for me too.

24th prob works for me.
posted by grobstein at 9:37 AM on February 22, 2013

Don't know why I said that. Weekend 22-24 definitely doesn't work for me.

Could possibly do 3/3 or 3/17. But maybe I should just try to make it to the next one. Definitely interested.

So what is the status of this? Can someone give a shout-out?
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 5:32 PM on March 4, 2013

Sorry, skiing came up. I hope you guys have a blast!
posted by larthegreat at 7:29 AM on March 11, 2013

Not sure what the status is on this, and I have since scheduled something else for the 16.
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 7:59 AM on March 11, 2013

I am very interested in this, but maybe we should pick a different weekend, based on the responses in this thread? Also seems like we should have more of a plan.
posted by likeatoaster at 12:33 PM on March 13, 2013

Computech actually emailed me last week asking about another weekend, and I answered, but I haven't heard anything yet - computech, are you there? Can you speak to this?
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 12:35 PM on March 13, 2013

Out of town! But y'know enjoy.
posted by grobstein at 10:29 AM on March 15, 2013

I've asked Computech to come in here.

Sorry folks, for the lack of follow-up. It's been a stressful week, and I have a couple of work commitments tomorrow. I have reset this for next Sunday.
posted by computech_apolloniajames at 7:25 PM on March 15, 2013

I'm likely to be out of town on Sunday. Hope you guys have good weather and good hiking.

I can do next Sunday.
