Look out, Boston

Thu February 28 at 7:00 PM, Jacob Wirth Restaurant
31 Stuart Street, Boston, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
I will be in Boston, MA at the end of next month for a few days and would be happy to have a meetup with some local mefites. Anyone feel like hoisting a few ales with an itinerant Canadian on Thursday the 28th o' February?

This is the 28th of Feb, right? Since this Thursday is the 24th, I just want to double check.

Is there a particular sort of bar or restaurant you'd want to attend? For example, are you looking for a Public House or a Cocktail Lounge?

Or, y'know, Chotchkie's.

Thursday the 28th of February, yes. I could have been more explicit.

I am of a mind for a pub; perhaps one with some history. If you can suggest a place which has an "Est. 1873" on its sign, my ears will perk up.

I am interested.

I have class Thursdays, but I could make it after. What about Jacob Wirth?
posted by backseatpilot at 5:07 AM on January 23, 2013

Weirdly, I will be in Boston for a conference that day, so I might be able to attend.
posted by GenjiandProust at 5:19 AM on January 23, 2013

I could be up for this, especially if it was somewhere close to S. Station or Back Bay so I can catch the train home.
posted by bondcliff at 6:07 AM on January 23, 2013

Jacob Wirth and JJ Foley's (the one on Kingston, not the one in the South End) are both storied and nearish to South Station.
posted by ldthomps at 7:30 AM on January 23, 2013

Wow, good response. Can I provisionally call it for Jacob Wirth, then? That is pretty convenient for me as well.
posted by ricochet biscuit at 7:39 AM on January 23, 2013

Jacob Wirth sounds good to me — I've never been there.

I've been there once; I enjoyed it. Works for me.

This sounds pretty cool. Pencil me in, since I would have to bumble down from the suburbs.
posted by Rustic Etruscan at 3:49 PM on January 23, 2013

OK, barring problems, I will attend.
posted by GenjiandProust at 3:09 PM on February 11, 2013

Although I will get there closer to 9.

Jacob Wirth is a lot of fun. I'm a maybe for the 28th.
posted by Miko at 11:26 AM on February 12, 2013

Lots of maybes; hope you guys can make it. I have made a booking for eight people under the name "Matt's birthday party." See you folks then.
posted by ricochet biscuit at 8:24 AM on February 14, 2013

I'm definitely coming, but I may be late because of suburb-bumbling and weather.
posted by Rustic Etruscan at 8:43 AM on February 14, 2013

Well, I'll just go ahead and mark myself down as a yes to show I'm not afraid of commitment.

I just need some space
posted by bondcliff at 10:42 AM on February 14, 2013

I have bumped the reservation up to ten people. See you folks next week.
posted by ricochet biscuit at 8:47 AM on February 20, 2013

I will probably be there early and hang out at the bar. I work in town but live in the 'burbs so it's pointless to go home and back in. If anyone else wants to join me, I'll be the nerd sitting at the bar alone, awkwardly pretending that he's interested in whatever sporting event is playing on the TV.
posted by bondcliff at 9:57 AM on February 20, 2013

I may see you: I am town for work, but my meetings wrap up early afternoon on Thursday and I am at liberty until the meetup. Unless there is a major snowstorm or something, I will just be a flaneur for the rest of the day. I will head there ahead of time and together we will feign interest in sporting events.
posted by ricochet biscuit at 10:32 AM on February 21, 2013

Ooh, I'll probably be there early, too! Metafilter pregaming commence!

Fuck! I could totally do Boston... on March 1.

Ok, I can definitely make it. I might or might not bring a friend.

Schedule changed, could do the 1st also, fiddlesticks

Note for those of you coming late, Jacob Wirth closes at 10:00 PM. I can only assume the original 19th-century proprietor had to get up early to milk the cows. Anyone coming very late tomorrow might want to check this thread to see where he wind up to continue carousing.
posted by ricochet biscuit at 12:56 PM on February 27, 2013

Is there a reason the reservation is for 8:00 and not earlier? Speaking for myself, I'm free any time after 6:00 or so. I will have to head home around 10:00, or whenever there is a convenient train. I may just go home first and get my car though, we'll see. I'd still be leaving around 10:00, because I am old.
posted by bondcliff at 1:00 PM on February 27, 2013

I'm planning to head in as soon as I clean up after work, but I'm coming by car, so time isn't an issue for me unless traffic is egregiously terrible.
posted by Rustic Etruscan at 1:05 PM on February 27, 2013

I can try moving it back. 7:00 better for people?
posted by ricochet biscuit at 1:22 PM on February 27, 2013

I don't care either way [NOT TIME-IST] but earlier would mean more time to hang with Mefites before everyone goes home or before backseatpilot gets arrested, which ALWAYS happens at meet-ups.

Aww, backseatpilot is a sweetie, cut it out.

Except for maybe that one time with the molotov cocktails and the anarchist sloganeering...

Mefite Identification Tips appreciated. What name is the reservation under?

I should be there around the same time and there's a chance my shirt will match backseatpilot's umbrella.

The reservation is under "Matt's Birthday Party."

Switching from 'maybe' to 'no'. Bad cold + sore throat is just not going away quickly enough, and I know I'd spend the whole time drinking and talking loudly.

Have a great time!

Ignignokt and I are yes, and heading out soon!

Incidentally, I passed by Jacob Wirth a few minutes ago and there is a big honking table of 12 chairs standing empty at the back, so no need to lurk at the bar, I suspect.

I am here. I have no idea how to describe myself. I'm wearing a green LL Bean rain jacket.

Heading out from work shortly - may actually be there around 7! Astonishing!

Of course, now that I've said that, I've cursed the MBTA into being late at every step.

We're under the big Jacob Wirth sign in the back.

Garsh, those Boston types sure is nice folks. It was delightful to spend an evening in a fine old restaurant with ten smart and funny people (a pleasure only slightly diminished by one annoying piano player). I count myself wiser in several ways tonight: I have had my sketchy knowledge of The Shot Heard Round The World exhaustively enhanced by rustic etruscan, have traded tales of rural Nova Scotia with eviemath, and I have been introduced to the curious delights of the deep-fried pickle by an absent Sidhedevil.

It was good seeing you all! I wish I could have heard better over the piano, but I wish I could hear better in general. ricochet, here's the Wikipedia history of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, so you don't have to rely on my shaky take.
posted by Rustic Etruscan at 8:41 PM on February 28, 2013

It was great to meet you, ricochet! That pianist brought out a little more condescension from me than I would have liked, but hey, he didn't hear, and it was something to laugh about.
posted by ignignokt at 8:45 PM on February 28, 2013

The piano guy could make any song sound like Billy Joel was butchering it. That is TALENT.

I'm now reading the Wiki article on the Battles of Lexington and Concord, and the amount of stuff that was incomplete, misleading, and wrong in my own account is embarassing me in retrospect.

As is that spelling of "embarrassing."

I looked online, but David Hockney's not hawking any hackneyed knee hacks. Were you hexed by a hockey hick? Heck, you should visit Dr. Huxtable, wearing a tux, driving a truck with some ducks, chompin' on some chex mix.
