Board Games

Sun July 29 at 2:00 PM, Boxcar Lounge
168 Avenue B, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's get together and play some board games.
A vague consensus is that 2pm July 29th at the Boxcar Lounge, 168 Avenue B, New York, NY, sounds good.

What games will you bring?

Pick any weekend day except the first Saturday of the month and I will try to get my boyfriend and his many boardgames to join in. I might come too, depending how boardgamey I feel on the given day.

Possible dates:

Saturday 28th July
Sunday 29th July (NB: this is my birthday and you will be forced to bring me cookies)

Saturday 4th August (mile valentine can't make it)
Sunday 5th August

Sundays are better than Saturdays for me.

The 5th I have a book club, but anything else will work.

29ths better for me next week also and I want to go and I have some boardgames that will blow your socks off of your mind!

Hurrah, boardgames!

I vote for Saturdays.

I have class at 3pm on Sundays. Not that that matters. Just weighing in. (Because I like board games.)

It appears that each of these dates has someone who can't make it. I'm going to go with the 29th partially because Potomac Avenue mentions that he has board games and promises to remove socks.

My apologies to Eideteker and Grimp0teuthis who would have preferred a Saturday.

If this goes well, perhaps we should have a monthly games meetup? We could alternate between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Another thought about future locations - most NYPL branches have a "community room" which sound like they could be used for this sort of thing. It would likely mean no food/beer, but might mean a nice big space with tables and accessibility for under 21s.

I think I will be out of town on the 29th, but I had a great time the last time we did this and would like to do it again.

for those of you who like board games and have some weeknight availability, the Museum at Eldridge Street just had a great board games/happy hour. It was good fun - not sure if another one is scheduled, but something to keep an eye out for

I should be able to make it! Yay!

Let's see if my D&D game gets cancelled. There's a non-zero chance of that.

I think I'm clear for Sunday. I'll see if I can scare up anything to bring along.
posted by Karmakaze at 5:18 AM on July 23, 2012

D&D game got cancelled, so I'll probably be making this.

I'd like to attend, but have no board games to bring! Well, I do have Apples to Apples

Ok. So here's the thing. My boyfriend's brother, who is coming from out of town to visit mom, announced that the date of the family get together is Sunday the 29th. There is no way, even if I could teleport between the two locations, for me to come to this meet up.

I'm kind of bummed because I was really looking forward to this. I hope it is awesome and you make me jealous.

It will be. But who's bringing Settlers?
posted by Potomac Avenue at 9:43 AM on July 24, 2012

This sounds fun- I'll be in North Carolina, but if it happens again I'm in.

I don't have Settlers but I will bring Forbidden Island.
posted by griphus at 9:50 AM on July 26, 2012

I have Settlers? I may be able to attend? I also have Acquire which I am a big fan of but there must be a limit to the number of games that could be played.

I will have to see how this weekend goes to see if I can make it. My partner may be able to come, too!

Oh god I want to do this so bad and I can't. I have been missing a good boardgame session for weeks and there are so many I want to play. Does anyone play Power Grid? I never get to play Power Grid! Robo Rally? I have God's Playground, the game about free-loading nobles in Renaissance Poland, but it's taken two months to play twice!

But I can't come!
posted by grobstein at 7:47 PM on July 26, 2012

I may or may not be able to come, but how cheap the drinks are/whether or not anyone is definitely bringing Settlers and can teach me how to play would definitely sway me. I think I should also mention that I do not have any games at all.
posted by bookwibble at 7:56 PM on July 26, 2012

OK, we are in! I will bring Settlers of Catan.

I played not that long ago and taught someone new to the game then, too so I'd be happy to show others how to play.
posted by mountmccabe at 8:19 AM on July 27, 2012

I can vouch for mountmccabe's patience with Settlers newbies, if anyone who's never played it wants to give it a whirl!

Grobstein, if we do another one of these some time soon I would love to try Power Grid.

We will be there. My boyfriend, Chris, will bring Puerto Rico/whatever else can fit in the Puerto Rico box.
posted by mlle valentine at 10:03 AM on July 27, 2012

Chris is also a big fan of Power Grid, and I bet he would play with you guys in the future.

Didn't bring any games but I have found the neighborhood. Am grabbing a sandwich at someplace called B-cup.
posted by Karmakaze at 10:22 AM on July 29, 2012

Looks like I actually won't be able to make this one. It sucks, too-- Settlers would have been fun. I hope you guys have a fun time!

Boxcar Lounge does not appear to be open yet.

They opened. We're in the back.

I had a good time with my bbq, but was sad to miss this meet up. I hope everyone had an awesome time and that we can do this again sometime soonish.
posted by sciencegeek at 4:22 PM on July 29, 2012

It was great to meet everyone and play a variety of games! I'm impressed that no one seems to have lost any game pieces despite sorta wobbly tables, rain, etc.

I'd definitely be up for a semi-regular board game meetup, if people are interested. Maybe next time on the west side of Manhattan?
