Meetup in Atlanta

Sat May 19 at 5:00 PM, East Point Corner Tavern
2783 Main St, East Point, GA, USA (Map & Directions)
I've lived in the greater ATL area for an entire year, and I still have yet to meet a single Atlanta MeFite. Come on, let's make something happen!
The masses have spoken: we are meeting at the East Point Corner Tavern, Saturday, May 19th, starting at 5. See you there!

I think someone always suggests Manuel's and we always end up in Decatur.

I smell a conspiracy?

Hmm... that's almost an hour's drive for me to get there. Would it be possible to meet anywhere in College Park?
posted by suburbanbeatnik at 10:17 PM on April 20, 2012

I have hardly ever been south except to go to the airport and would be glad to explore such an option. Or meet in Decatur.
posted by hydropsyche at 5:20 AM on April 21, 2012

I live in Decatur, so I would be willing or drive a bit. Or here.
posted by polywomp at 7:16 AM on April 21, 2012

Pleeeaaase not Manuel's! I have never understood why people love that place; terrible, overpriced food and mediocre service. I'd love anywhere in Decatur but seriously as long as it's not Manuel's I'll gladly come meet my ATL MeFites! (sorry to be so negative but every meetupy thing I've gone to has ended up at Manuel's and it makes me so crazy!)
posted by masquesoporfavor at 7:19 AM on April 21, 2012

I've never been anywhere in the Southern part of Atlanta except the airport either, so I have no suggestions to make in that area.
posted by polywomp at 8:36 AM on April 21, 2012

I've never been to Manuel's, but just looking at the website is off-putting. Plus, I'd have to drive an hour, so yeah, I'd rather not go there.

How does The Brake Pad in downtown College Park sound? I've never been there, but it gets pretty good reviews on Yelp, plus it looks nice in the pictures. And it has a full bar! What do you guys think?

I’m on the far eastside, Snellville-ish. Where’s everyone else?
posted by bongo_x at 9:31 AM on April 21, 2012

I'm in Peachtree City.
posted by suburbanbeatnik at 9:35 AM on April 21, 2012

Some friends live in East Point, they like this place - The Corner Tavern - East Point. I've never been there, though. I like the look of The Brake Pad too.

Another "no" vote for Manuel's. I ate there years ago, maybe in the early '80s, and wasn't impressed.

Since we're sharing, the wife and I live in Conyers, sort of right behind Stonecrest Mall if you're familiar with the area. We're in Rockdale county, but could just about throw stones into Dekalb from our front door.

I live in Decatury-Scottdale-ish! Corner Tavern and Brake Pad sound good to me!
posted by masquesoporfavor at 12:52 PM on April 21, 2012

We actually had a really nice meet-up at Manuel's in August (September?) and the food was tasty. One of our local MeFites works there.

But like I said, I'm glad to drive elsewhere. The first meet-up we went to was walking distance from our house in Decatur.
posted by hydropsyche at 3:46 PM on April 21, 2012

The only things I've been to in the south of the city are the airport, and a car dealership. Decatur is definitely much more convenient for me, but the last couple meetups have been in or near it, so it seems only fair to venture further afield this time.

I'm in!

Also, at the last meetup we talked about the possibility of getting together to play board games at some point. Is anybody up for something like that? My offer of hosting in Stone Mountain still stands.
posted by duien at 9:00 PM on April 21, 2012 [1 favorite]

I am always up for board games and such. Sounds fun.
posted by polywomp at 10:26 PM on April 21, 2012

We would still love to do a board game meetup, too!
posted by hydropsyche at 4:57 AM on April 22, 2012

I'm up for anything but nudge for a location with some sort of martaccessibility.
posted by threeants at 11:42 AM on April 22, 2012

also, <4 Manuel's (that's like a <3 but EVEN MORE)
posted by threeants at 11:44 AM on April 22, 2012 [1 favorite]

threeants_ the Corner Tavern in East Point is right across the street (almost) from the MARTA station. Also, I can walk there! (So, of course, that is my vote) Also, pretty tasty food and friendly atmosphere.
posted by mkim at 4:38 PM on April 22, 2012

I vote for decatur.
posted by andoatnp at 5:59 PM on April 22, 2012

Mkim, I agree-- I think the Corner Tavern would be a good place to meet. It seems reasonable, it's accessible to MARTA, and-- for the sake of variety-- I think it would be a good idea to mix things up and have a meet-up somewhere other than Decatur for once. We can meet at Manuel's next time. :)

So, what would be a good day to meet? My schedule's pretty open right now. Any suggestions?
posted by suburbanbeatnik at 7:38 PM on April 22, 2012

Yeah! Southside represent! I can't drive at night, so the only way I can attend is if I can walk. And this is the first time that has even been a possibility. So you guys choose and I will be there.
posted by mkim at 8:20 PM on April 22, 2012

I'm up for East Point. Atlanta's a big town, we shouldn't always have the meetups in the same area.

The only thing we have on our schedule is seeing Wilco in Birmingham on 11 May, and a family reunion in Wrens the next Sunday (the 20th).
posted by ralan at 4:42 AM on April 23, 2012

The date/time will decide it for me. I'm fine with MARTAing or driving wherever.
Also, I'd be up for board games someplace. My apartment doesn't have a great layout for hosting things but I am ace at bringing beer to things.
posted by pointystick at 12:50 PM on April 23, 2012

MARTAing to East Point sounds great for me. Anytime in May pretty much is good.
posted by hydropsyche at 3:52 PM on April 23, 2012

The sooner the better for me, I can’t plan anything very far out and expect to actually make it because of work.
posted by bongo_x at 6:04 PM on April 23, 2012

I have a crappy Civic with no AC, but it fits three people and I am always willing to carpool anyone from the Decatur area if needed.
posted by polywomp at 8:03 PM on April 23, 2012

Sounds like the Corner Tavern in East Point is gaining a bit of consensus. I've been to some of their other locations and it's quite a bar, with good food.

Date and time suggestions?

Weekends are best for me, and early evenings leave people with enough time to get their stuff done, and early enough for people to run off if they've got plans (and we don't get them drunk enough to talk them out of those plans).

So, like a 4-6 or 5-7 on Saturday May 18?
posted by zpousman at 11:47 AM on April 24, 2012

The 19th is the Saturday, but yeah, that would work for us.
posted by ralan at 12:13 PM on April 24, 2012

The East Point Corner Tavern on May 19th sounds great to me. Extra plus for Corner Tavern: Poptails!

I can offer rides from the Stone Mountain/Decatur general area if that's helpful to anybody.
posted by duien at 1:24 PM on April 24, 2012 [1 favorite]

That's fine with me. Would the earlier or later hour be preferred?
posted by suburbanbeatnik at 1:46 PM on April 24, 2012

Anyone close to Avondale Estates who's willing to give me a ride?

(Poptails?! I have a new obsession.)
posted by runningwithscissors at 2:10 PM on April 24, 2012

runningwithscissors, I'll give you a ride.
posted by duien at 3:18 PM on April 24, 2012

I’d love to offer a ride, and will, but I’ll have to wait until the date is much closer to see if I can make it.
posted by bongo_x at 3:45 PM on April 24, 2012

I'm working all day and night on the 19th, but If we do it on FRIDAY May 18th, I can be there...
posted by warreng at 9:11 PM on April 24, 2012

masquesoporfavor, I live in Scottdale! Where you at?

I might be able to make it to this one--I'm not sure what my schedule for that weekend's looking like just yet.
posted by Maaik at 7:14 AM on April 25, 2012 [1 favorite]

OK-- I'm ready to put the date and time up. But May 18th or the 19th? What do the rest of you guys think?
posted by suburbanbeatnik at 12:15 PM on April 25, 2012

Saturday is best for me. The last thing I want to do is try to get from Conyers to East Point in Friday rush hour.

What time we meet isn't really a concern. Either the earlier or later time is fine.
posted by ralan at 12:34 PM on April 25, 2012

Friday is going to be bad with the traffic. Saturday is better.
posted by pointystick at 1:40 PM on April 25, 2012

Saturday! Friday will be crazy.
posted by runningwithscissors at 5:18 PM on April 25, 2012

Saturday is definitely better for me as well. No real preference about time.
posted by duien at 11:30 AM on April 26, 2012

Ugh, sorry. I sounded way more imperious than I meant; that'll teach me to try to dash off a comment on my phone while someone's demanding my attention. I just don't think Friday would be good for driving.

duien, thanks for the ride! I'll be in touch with contact info, etc.
posted by runningwithscissors at 12:36 PM on April 26, 2012

Maaik--sorry I forgot about this thread for a while! I'm technically in Stone Mountain but I'm like N Decatur/Rockbridge so I hate to say Stone Mountain because to ME this isn't quiiiite Stone Mountain. I think the "You're all up in Scottdale" (that's what it says right?) sign is like two blocks from my house.
posted by masquesoporfavor at 2:25 PM on April 29, 2012

Huh! There's more of us out here than I thought. I say I'm in Stone Mountain since that's what envelopes that arrive at my house say. Really, I'm right near the Indian Creek MARTA. So, actually not that far from you Scottdale folks, especially N Decatur/Rockbridge.

Hey neighb!
posted by masquesoporfavor at 3:42 PM on April 30, 2012

Hey everyone, I just wanted to jump in and say that, as always, I'll be behind the bar at Manuel's on Saturday, BUT, I went off and got married at the courthouse and will be having a very super informal "yay, we're married" party Friday 18th at Manuel's. So if you are local and feel like it, stop on by and eat some cake, we'll have lots!

Come anytime between 6 -Midnight, unless we accidently drink too much, I'm totally a lightweight.

Something about the notion of becoming part of an AskMe I've read in the past is way freaking meta (meta Meta?).

Congratulations, stormygrey! (We got married at the DeKalb courthouse last summer and then celebrated at Leon's, so I'm always glad to hear of someone doing it in similar style.)
posted by hydropsyche at 4:52 PM on May 17, 2012

So, Stone Mountain/Scottdale/Avondale/etc. people: I'm definitely going to the meetup, and I'm definitely going in a car. If you'd like to carpool, shoot me a memail and I'd be happy to give you a ride. Unless there's secretly twelve of you, in which case I might have to turn a few people down :)
posted by duien at 9:11 AM on May 18, 2012

I am MARTAing it there. I live halfway between the Avondale and Decatur stations and would be glad to ride the train with anybody who would like company and can't fit in duien's car.
posted by hydropsyche at 2:30 PM on May 18, 2012

Any suggestions on how to find each other once we're there? At the last meetup I attended, someone updated the IRL page with where they were sitting, but I didn't see that until after the fact. I was about to go table by table asking people if they were there from the Internet, but then I saw someone in a MetaFilter t-shirt and knew I was in the right place. Do we need hand signals? Colored bandanas? Signal flares? Does someone have a MetaFilter t-shirt they could wear?
posted by ralan at 4:24 PM on May 18, 2012

Yes, seconding this, ralan. How do we meetup?! I have never actually been to a meetup. Hand signals? Name tags? Everyone color coordinate? Codewords? Help?

If anyone needs a ride I’ll be coming from the Lithonia-Snellville-ish area.
posted by bongo_x at 6:19 PM on May 18, 2012

I'll be wearing a dark blue 1980s cardigan with paintbrush swooshies, a hot pink tank and a black miniskirt, if that helps. I'll try my best to be the first one there too.
posted by suburbanbeatnik at 7:37 PM on May 18, 2012

I’m interested to meet someone who knows what they will be wearing the next day.

I'll be on my way shortly!

Argh. Something came up and it doesn't look like I am going to make it. :-( Have an alchopop for me!
posted by mkim at 3:00 PM on May 19, 2012

We really enjoyed ourselves, and had a great time meeting everyone (some of you for the second time). Let's not wait so long to have another one.
posted by ralan at 6:09 PM on May 19, 2012

That really was quite awesome. So, next time we try West Atlanta, right?
posted by hydropsyche at 7:10 PM on May 19, 2012

It was great to meet all of you, now I’m trying to put names and faces together.
posted by bongo_x at 7:19 PM on May 19, 2012

It was fun meeting everyone! It was quite a turn-out, wasn't it?

Yes, I think we should try West Atlanta next time. It would be fun to see a different part of the city. I'll start asking around for a good place to meet-- and of course, if any of you have a suggestion, I'd love to hear it! :)
posted by suburbanbeatnik at 7:27 PM on May 19, 2012

Somewhere a little less noisy would be great, although that’s hard to predict sometimes.
posted by bongo_x at 7:46 PM on May 19, 2012

How far west do we want to go? West Midtown-ish?
posted by pointystick at 10:14 AM on May 20, 2012

Good question on how far west. Some parts of the West End are a bit... sketchy. My wife and her boss have eaten here and liked it, but I'm not sure how conducive it is to just hanging out - Six Feet Under - Westside. Someone more familiar with the area may have some better suggestions.
