We all know that there’s no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism, but what does that mean for the rest of our lives? This Drunk Ed show will ask questions like: What are the most cost-efficient crimes? How do you choose between all of your many garbage habits? And is it ethically acceptable for vegetarians to (literally) eat the rich? Talks by Kelli Korducki, John Leavitt (Mefi’s own The Whelk), Anna Merlan, and Eve Peyser. Tickets and information here!
I'm giving a public lecture on NW Coast Archaeology at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) on October 3rd at 7.45 (This link says 7.00 but there is an AGM first, I think). It's free and open to the public. If you come, be sure to say hi. I'm also in Portland the next day (October 4) and if anyone was interested in meeting for an after-work beer that would be fun - but I'm staying near Gladstone/Jennings Lodge so don't know how feasible that is, I don't know Portland at all.
I will be giving a talk on Batman villains and the insanity defense as part of a Super Heroines, Etc. event. Super Heroines, Etc. (aka SHE) is a St. Louis-based 501c3 nonprofit focused on empowering women through educational events, classes, and workshops. If that sounds like your kind of thing, then you should come!
David Lodge, novelist, critic and sharp satirist of academic life and politics, will be discussing the work and life of the father of science fiction and shagger extraordinaire H.G. Wells at the V&A this Friday, 17 June at 7pm. Let me know if you'd like a free ticket! - I have a few spares (RRP £9) which I'm happy to donate to any interested Mefites.
The next TEDx - regional TED event is in Detroit on Wed Sept 29. Any mefites going besides me? [more inside]
