Burning Man Meetup

Wed August 31 at 3:00 PM, Snack Food Glory Hole
9 Black Rock Rd, Back Rock City, NV, USA (Map & Directions)
Set your watches for Playa time and join all your Burner buddies for a midday MeFi meetup!
From aubilenon:

* The camp is the Snack Food Glory Hole. We feed you snacks. Through a hole! The way nature intended!
* We're a big enough camp that the camp's be easy to find, and a small enough camp that the meetup will be easy to find.
* We'll have some nice shade structures and nice drinks. And of course nice snacks. So we don't have to wander to center camp, and if people don't show up at mid-afternoon on the dot they won't get left behind.
* rosa also is camped with SFGH.

Our camp is publicly open for snacking in the later afternoon (Wednesday we open at 3 for our Advanced Snack Hour), so why don't you nice folks come by around then for a snack and a drink, and hang out in our shade structure and watch passers by eat weird things through a hole!

Summary:

Where: Snack Food Glory Hole, 9:00 Plaza
When: Wednesday mid-afternoon (3pm-???)
Who: Me (my campmates know me as "Jesse"), rosa (known as "Rosa"), all yall

I'm so there. No ideas, except not Center Camp, since that didn't work out too well last time.

Yeah, I'm definitely not thinking Center Camp. I'm hoping someone with a theme camp will chime in here. (I'm at a major one myself, but I just decided to go to BM this year and I'm really late to their party, so I don't have all the skinny on their plans.)

We're going for the first time this year. We are at a theme camp but it's new, and small, and I don't think they will want to host anything. But if someone else hosts, I can pretend like I will be there.

Well, I'll be at Circus Bootcamp. Teaching folk to juggle, unicycle, and etc. 7:30 and F, I think. We're generally all really busy during official camp events though..

I thought people met up for lamplighting one year and that went well? (I was having a bit of a burning man time and totally forgot about it until several days later).

I'm the fool who nominated Center Camp last year, and it certainly didn't work out as planned. I did meet two MeFites, which was nice, but not everything that I'd hoped. We should definitely choose a better location.

Pick a time and a place, and I will be there.

In 2008, my birgin year, I totally forgot day / time / year and missed the meetup.

In 2010, I actually remembered the meetup, then wandered around Center Camp forlornly for an hour because I didn't know where or what people looked like.

I won't be there this year, but may I suggest choosing a REALLY specific place that is small but recognizable? Perhaps the Post Office at 2 pm on Wednesday so everyone can walk together over to Center Camp or elsewhere in the shade?

Okay forget the post office, forget center camp, my camp is the awesomest place to have a meetup.

Yeah, what aubilenon said!

We're the only two people in our camp who I know of who are active on mefi, though a couple of our crew have accounts that they forget about most of the time. Nevertheless, they're all super friendly and Jesse and I will totally vouch for their general awesomeness.

Also, you will not have a weirder snack on the playa than the one(s) you get through our hole, or your money back!
posted by rosa at 5:30 PM on July 22, 2011

Hmm. We're at 3:00 Plaza, so does that mean that you're the furthest away that you could possibly be? :) Still, I will try to be there!
posted by cabingirl at 5:59 PM on July 23, 2011

Nonsense! We're only √2 times as far (~141%) as your shortest route to Center Camp, and 4/π (~127%) as far as if you walked to center camp on Esplanade.

what a great idea for a camp.

I am at bacon without borders again, and assuming that we both get an invitation letter and get the car running again, will be back out with SnowJob (our mobile snow blowing car), and I will attempt to coral us to any meet up that happens! Which should be easy, since I tend to drive more than anyone else.

....if anyone has a ticket for sale, let me know. a friend was actually going to buy yesterday after work, and we all know how that worked out. sigh
posted by changeling at 4:51 PM on July 26, 2011

There will almost certainly be face value tickets available in the next few weeks, people are just freaking out right now. It's pretty funny to watch...
posted by flaterik at 1:31 PM on July 27, 2011

Yes, tickets will open up. You'll just have to wait until the last minute, as people's plans suddenly evaporate and they end up stuck with tickets days before the Burn. Happens every year.

thanks, you guys. I hope so! right now it's truly a circus. somebody on my city's craigslist was offering a threesome with his wife PLUS the highest tier fee. my goodness.

Snack Food Glory Hole is an awesome idea! It ticks all the boxes on my list of good Burning Man activities - simple but creative idea, unexpected results, preferably involves food.

See you then...hard to believe it's just about 1 month from now.

I'll be there with my art car that looks like a wooden chinese junk boat, possibly often also near flaterik's Snowjob!

My camp, Transmorphagon, is on 3:00 and Esplanade, and you can sort of see what its frontage tends to look like in this picture.

For what it's worth, the absolutely best way to find people on-playa are those little Garmin GPS radios. Love mine to death, if I can find it in the Dusty Box of Stuff.

My camp is the White Dragon Noodle Bar. We have vegan shiitake mushroom ramen with shoyu and sake. We are at 4:30 and B. Noodles are sundown Mon-Fri. If you Sumo you skip the line!

See you there.

I've joined the Black Rock Center for Unlearning, at 4:30 & A (so, close to you, poe! I'll be sure to stop by, sounds delicious). should we make this meetup official?
posted by changeling at 9:04 AM on August 2, 2011

3 o'clock side is where to be! Bacon without borders is at 4:20 & C. And if anyone is on a GMRS radio (even more usefully, a Rino so we can see where you are!), we tend to be on channel 16/9.
posted by flaterik at 12:14 PM on August 2, 2011

Well, I WAS going to be there. But I just found out that DMV rejected our car for being insufficiently mutant (which is bullshit, it's been there 3 times and always been highly praised for its mutantness) and the email they insist they sent never got to us. Patiently waiting evidently put us past the unpublished deadline for appeals, and to say I'm displeased is just WEE bit of an understatement.

All righty, it looks like Snack Food Glory Hole wins the day.

Where: Snack Food Glory Hole, 9:00 Plaza (That's the ADDRESS, virgins!)

Who: aubilenon, Rosa, and you!

I'll make it official!

That is great news, flaterik.

Now, I'll trade places with you: I can't be at the meetup because I'll be working a shift preparing for my own camp's Happy Hour! (Mystikal Misfits @ 4:30/B. Bring an ID. Stop by. Drink.)

Hey, two years ago (or was it three? there was a big rope swing thing in the middle of the dance floor ), I both played a set at Mystikal Misfits and brought snow job by one day to thoroughly snow the dance floor. (I've known orence for many years, and he was doing sound there that year.) Small world, as usual!

Hi everyone. I won't be there til Wednesday night, super sorry to miss the meetup.

You are hereby invited to 4:15 and G to visit camp Othermelon, where we will have hammocks, shade, more hammocks, and a cargo-net hammock. Look for the watermelon umbrella.
posted by mai at 10:02 AM on August 23, 2011

if only the snack food glory hole was at 4:30. that would be convenient. but nothing better at the end of a long walk then a weird snack, right?

mai, your camp sounds awesome. i'm sure i will absolutely be looking for the watermelon umbrella at some point.
posted by GastrocNemesis at 2:31 PM on August 23, 2011

3:00 is a pretty short walk from 4:30, actually. Which is not to distract from the still-savory reward of the weird snack.
posted by mykescipark at 1:49 AM on August 24, 2011

I thought it was at 9:00???

Also though, I have no concept of how big everything is, being a birgin :-( But when I went to the newbie night they showed that image of BRC laid over Chicago and it was pretty impressive. How far apart are all the streets? Comparable to city streets/ blocks?

I've also decided against bringing my bike so I'm trying to get psyched up for lots of walking . . . if everything turns out to be closer together then I expect, it'll just be a pleasant surprise!
posted by GastrocNemesis at 8:51 AM on August 24, 2011

right -- the time is at 3pm, the address is 9:00 Plaza.
last year was my first year, and I generally found everything to be vastly larger and farther than I ever imagined. which is awesome! but get some quality insoles, is my recommendation. anyone know the diameter of black rock city?
posted by changeling at 8:58 AM on August 24, 2011

They told us 1.5 miles (for the diameter) but based on photos/ descriptions i've been wondering if that's accurate. I'd think the diameter would be bigger?

Also: where is plaza? It's not on the map I have. Is that just the middle part? It's not the same thing as esplanade is it?
posted by GastrocNemesis at 9:35 AM on August 24, 2011

"plazas" or "keyholes" are the wider openings into the city at 9 and 3 (and, it appears, 7:30 and 4:30. i think that's new).

ring road is "that goddamn road around center camp that confused the shit out of you until you finally get a sense for it saturday afternoon when everyone starts stealing street signs and you get confused again"

you can get garmin and google earth maps of the city at http://www.wkeller.net/BRC-GPS/ if you play to play around with details! They're not Official BORG Produced, but in my experience with previous years they're been dead on. (and combine WONDERFULLY with gamin's rhino gps/radios, because even when you can't hear the person you're talking to, you can SEE WHERE THEY ARE ON A MAP, which is OMG awesome when you're trying to find someone)

According to the GPS map for this year, it's 1 mile from 3 and esplanade to 9 and esplanade, and 2 miles from 3 and L to 9 and L (hint: most of us don't use the full street names. they're always alphabetical, and the street names are always kinda dopey, so you can just use the first letter), and 2 miles from center camp to the Trash fence. That doesn't sound all that huge until you're walking across it in the middle of the day ;)
posted by flaterik at 10:16 AM on August 24, 2011

I'm leaving for the Burn today and my brain has been out there for a week already, so I'll just shut up and stop dropping in here to confuse people. Safe travels, everyone.

My crew will be there laaaaate Saturday!

The car/boat looks pretty much like this with the addition of a 15' mast and 10' junk sail that I'm desperately trying to finish building tonight! Say hi if you see it!

We're at 3:00 and Esplanade, although I think we'll also be docking at the Pier fairly often.

now i don't feel so bad- i completely failed!! i tried to go, but i was chemically altered, tried to walk there in the blazing-ass sunshine, and ended up crashing in a pool of cushions in some random camp halfway there.

i did make it to camp othermelon though, where i ate pickles and had a hammocky-good time. and i walked past mystikal misfits about thousand times as it was on the way to my camp, but for the life of me i couldn't remember who was camped at each place. so . . . i failed to say hi :-(

also for the record my first burn was amazing. i can't wait to go back!

This year more than ever I realized the complete and utter futility of making any plans at Burning Man ever. For serious. I hope others will post the meetups in future years, but I'm not even going to pretend! Glad to hear we all had fun. Wheeee!

Whew. Just got around to looking at photos. I don't have anything much different from changeling's group photo, but it's a bit different crop (and more bunny ears)

The front of our camp however was featured in Reuters's photos stream, so that's kind of neat.

Anyway, thanks to you guys who came by, and to those who didn't: we missed you, but still had plenty of fun. Maybe you'll remember next year!

BTW: Here's the recipe for the drink I served you guys.

oh nice. great photos! aubilenon, i'm glad you got photos of the zootrope. people kept telling me i had to see it but the one time i went past it, on an art car, i didn't stop because i didn't realize what it was (i didn't know it was vertical like that.) i never did make my way back to it although i meant to. Are the art projects always different from year to year or do they sometimes come back? I definitely regret not seeing that thing in action.
posted by GastrocNemesis at 3:16 PM on September 12, 2011

Thanks!

Most of the stuff in the inner playa is new every year, but there are a few things that do return, usually with some significant changes. The onion-shaped structures this year (this is a weird shot from the inside) had just the regular non warped one last year. And these forced perspective blocks are a bigger better version of a project that was on the playa in 2007.

Heavily themed big installations like the zoetrope probably won't be back. That's not the first zoetrope Peter Hudson has brought to burning man though. Hopefully he'll keep making more!

4th burning man, first meetup that I actually managed to find and remember at the time.

I don't think the friend I was with thought that wandering over to a Snack Food Glory Hole would result in me finding the Friends of Matt Haughey whose names I otherwise couldn't remember, for meetup that was a day and time I hadn't bothered to write down... but hey, it worked out.

Does anyone know of decent video of the zoetrope? I'd like to show my bf, but most of the videos I've found aren't so great.. something about frame rate and strobe light not synchronziing nicely..
