Sun August 7 at 2:00 PM, Glomar response's house
9385 SW West Haven Dr, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
Bring an instrument you like, play music together for a couple of hours.
Super-casual thing, just getting together to practice or noodle around or what have you. No skill/repertoire required.

Event is being held at Glomar response's house, conveniently located near the Sunset Transit Center, so if you need a ride and can get as far as there, someone can pick you up. 2pm! Bringing foods and/or drinks is probably appreciated!

EDIT: updated the date; this is now being held on August 7th! Address is 9385 SW West Haven Dr.

Is this a one-time thing or potentially recurring?
posted by Glomar response at 7:26 AM on July 11, 2011

Potentially recurring! Kinda depends on how folk feel about it, I imagine. And recurring could be regular or sporadic.

Oh man, you've totally opened an all new world of meetups. Cortex has a theremin!

He should BRING IT.

I would be bringing a harp.

(actually if anyone was super interested I could even bring two)

Well, venue-wise my house is essentially empty, has an acre of barbarous woods, and is available almost anytime in August, and we could be as loud as we can stand it — or quiet, that's OK, too.

I am on the far west side of the City, almost to Beaverton; a quick walk from the Sunset Transit Center.

I have played a variety of instruments poorly throughout the years but don't currently have, or play, anything. However, I would be interested in seeing a harp or two in person.

I could bring my spinning wheel.

I think I still have a bass guitar somewhere. And an amp, too.

Can an August date be arrived at? There are 31, after all, so our odds are OK.
posted by Glomar response at 8:34 AM on July 14, 2011

what about.. August 21? picking a number at random here
posted by curious nu at 11:00 AM on July 14, 2011

August 21 works for me, assuming nothing bad happens at the Game Day meetup.
posted by Glomar response at 12:59 PM on July 16, 2011

Can we please do it the 21st? Anybody?
posted by Glomar response at 1:48 PM on July 20, 2011

I am down for 21st. Glomar, is your house still available as a space? (sorry for the lapsed response on this, computer died for nigh a week)
posted by curious nu at 2:38 PM on July 20, 2011

Yes! My house is available.
The (current round of) structural repairs will be done by then and I will be prepped for a road trip the next week so it will be fairly tidy and civilized.

PS
We should promote this from proposed to meetup.
posted by Glomar response at 9:58 AM on July 22, 2011

If we go with my place — and I hope that we do — I note that nickthetourist lives very close to me, so I will make contact to get some backup if needed. We could make runs to the Max station to bring people and equipment in, for example.
posted by Glomar response at 2:42 PM on July 22, 2011

Yay for music! I will make it if I can, definitely.
posted by cortex at 3:36 PM on July 22, 2011

Okay! Posted. I picked 2pm but if that's no good, Glomar, let me know. Also I figure people can probably bring foods+drinks to share.
posted by curious nu at 12:05 PM on July 23, 2011

2 PM is great.
posted by Glomar response at 3:34 PM on July 23, 2011

Portlanders! I knows you done seen this one. What's preventing you from signing up? Lack of instrument? Crippling social anxiety? Day/time doesn't work for you? Totally spaced it but now, for sure, you're going to sign up and attend?

I'm going to bring some homebrew, in case that entices anyone.
posted by curious nu at 5:30 PM on July 28, 2011

I will as it turns out not be in town on this weekend. Fie! If there's nobody else committed to the proposed date, how would you feel about nudging it to a different week?
posted by cortex at 5:47 PM on July 28, 2011

I am totally fine with week-nudging.
posted by curious nu at 7:13 PM on July 28, 2011

nudge!
posted by mimo at 9:17 AM on July 29, 2011

Yes, that is OK for me and my house as venue, if it it forwardnudged.

I'll be driving cross-country with the teen wolf starting around 8/24, so a day in this range, inclusive, works for me: Aug 7 - Aug 23, except Aug 20, because its the Game Day in PDX thing.

What say youze, cortex + mimo + whoevers?
posted by curious nu at 2:00 PM on July 29, 2011

Whatever works for cortex (and other actual musicians concerned). My August has filled up, so I think y'all should just do what you have to do.
posted by mimo at 3:40 PM on July 29, 2011

This ain't no debt ceiling, but it is surprisingly difficult. Fun is being built, folks!

I am now asking for a show of hands —yea or nay— on each of the following:

August 7
August 13
August 14

As host, I can offer food and beverage as well as a temporary supply of do-what-thou-wilt, but only if we plan a date.

PS

If none of the dates above satisfy, we can consider Friday the 12th or 19th.
posted by Glomar response at 9:13 AM on July 31, 2011

Heh. Sorry, I really am down with the idea, just been super distracted. As far as I know, the 7th would work fine for me.
posted by cortex at 9:29 AM on July 31, 2011

7th is good!
posted by curious nu at 9:30 AM on July 31, 2011

Let's do it. This will motivate some tidying.
8/7/2011 2PM a/k/a 1400 hours.
One thing: Rope in more people, please. No musical talent or equipment required, as far as I am concerned.

Do you need to call me? Please do — 503-858-0430

I will provide foodstuffs and beverages proportional to the number of folks that confirm.
posted by Glomar response at 10:49 AM on July 31, 2011

I see that the date officially has been changed. Good job!
posted by Glomar response at 3:21 PM on July 31, 2011

The last thing I'd want to do is limit the range of possibilities, but is there a any general sense of what...not sure what to call it...genre, maybe...might be pursued? I.e. old-time, blues, free-form Americana, jazz, symphonic, marching band, rock, who-the-hell-knows-wait-and-see? Just curious.

Though if any ABBA tunes are proposed I'm out.
or Eagles - been there done that

posted by Greg_Ace at 3:55 PM on July 31, 2011

I'm guessing who-the-hell-knows-please-come-and-see.
posted by Glomar response at 3:44 AM on August 1, 2011

I may be able to attend. If I do, there is a non-zero probability that I will bring pie.
posted by mimo at 11:45 PM on August 2, 2011

Yeah, I figure we'll just wing it, and learn how to more effectively figure things out for future engagements based on how that goes.

Greg, I vote you bring a horn or a sax for the self-serving reason that I don't have any of those and would enjoy it being in the mix, if you're paralyzed by indecision.

I have a few different things I can bring; guitar would be a pretty good foundational thing if we aren't already going to have a couple there to pass around, but banjo is also fun and I could pop a melodica and a uke and some harmonicas into my bag regardless of what Large Instrument I go with.

Please use the attending-ness widget, please.
posted by Glomar response at 11:20 AM on August 3, 2011

There will be a harmonica and guitar here to start with.
posted by Glomar response at 3:10 PM on August 5, 2011

As it turns out I've got something else I have to do tomorrow afternoon, but I'll shoot for making the next one.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:33 AM on August 6, 2011

Based on what Trimet is telling me, looks like the best I could do solo is to ride a 20 to Barnes and 84th and hoof it the last mile, which is doable but pretty much means forget about the banjo cuz that son of a bitch is heavy.

So the whole "someone can pick you up at Sunset TC" notion is sounding attractive if that's indeed workable. Or Barnes & 84th, or whatever makes sense.
posted by cortex at 7:03 PM on August 6, 2011

cortex, I'm coming all the way from Gresham, so I can pick you up pretty much anywhere along the way if you'd like. What all were you going to bring? I'll make sure I've got car-room.
posted by curious nu at 8:08 PM on August 6, 2011

Banjo and a couple smaller things. Don't need much space, just don't want my arm to fall off schlepping the thing, so that'd be great. I'm up in North Portland near St. Johns.
posted by cortex at 8:18 PM on August 6, 2011

Shore. Shoot me a memail with the address, I'll aim for stopping by about 1:30-1:40p.

Metafilter music club #1 was a success! (success measured in that people got together and played instruments for a bit) Shame on all you people who missed out. Thanks again to Glomar response for the space and snacks.

Thoughts for the following meets lest they be forgotten: have people bring chords/tabs for 2-3 songs they know; themes (symphonic metal, video games, camp songs, et cetera); some kind of recording thing to catch interesting improv melodies.
