NYC - Meet me on Broadway!

Tue July 5 at 9:00 AM, New York City, NY
4001 Broadway, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
I'll be in NYC from Baltimore for a couple of days and really want to spend one of them doing something that I've never done, which is walking down Broadway from Washington Heights to Battery Park. If anyone is interested in joining me for all or part of it, I'd welcome some friendly faces!

I would love to do a walk through Manhattan, but will likely arrive back in town too late. Maybe could join for part of it.

I'll be out of town, but this is a great walk.

That is a really nice part of lower Manhattan to walk through.

I want to recommend walking the High Line Park too, but... well, see, after a rest in Battery Park you could walk along the Hudson River Greenway path (right on the water's edge) up to Gansevoort St (between 12th and 13th) where you could ascend the stairs to the Park and then follow it's path all the way up to 22nd street. The views are amazing, especially if you're not familiar with the city. But, this would basically triple the length of your walk. How do you feel about spending all day walking?

I have this job thing sadly. But I might be able to get out of the working. Also, please ignore what I said in your askme about making an IRL. My order of metafiltering is metafilter, askmetafilter, metatalk then IRL.

Washington Heights? Not Washington Square? Ooohhh.

I'm working though.

I can't do this on a work day but I admire it.

I work near the end of your trek, so I might be up to grab a drink or snack in the area.

that would be cool if you could post a walking agenda or post location updates to here as you go so folks that work nearby could come out for a brief break at the appropriate time and meet up with you, and if you took photos of the meets of everyone as you go!

i personally work in tribeca which is towards the end of your route. you could stop by the new shake shake in battery park city and i'll meet up with you there - they have a rather delicious black and white shake :)

Yeah Broadway runs right past my apartment, if you happen through it when I'm free I could play Informative Docent for a stretch.

The Whelk - MeMail me your approximate area and email / digits and I'll alert you when I pass through.

I'll try to update this as I go, but I will be focused on...well, walking and seeing and picture taking. :)

Also: if it rains, I might cry.

What's wrong with walking in the rain?

Walk sounds awesome- if I don't have to be at work early, I'll come by in the morning.

An archive of The Blue And White that includes "On The Street Where You Live," in which the author walks the length of Broadway.
We are tantalizingly close to the end of our trek and elated to find ourselves in front of 2 Broadway. We rush toward the dimly glowing storefront that we think must be One. What could be at One Broadway? What treasures could it hold? Apparently: tortilla chips and guacamole. It's a Chipotle. One Broadway is a Chipotle.
obNYT.

I've done the walk, from the tippy-top of Manhattan southwards to Battery Park. Wish I could join you for this, but, work. Enjoy!

Yes! I work on the other side of the park, but I'll send you my digits and you can maybe text me so I can x-town bus and meet you somewhere in the low 100s or 90s?

Not putting words into yccma's mouth, but this may turn into a dinner meetup in the evening. Stay tuned, I guess?

From The Whelk's link:
"Broadway now runs all the way to Albany, making it the longest street in the world."

Shut up!

OK, so google maps and wikipedia show it ends in Sleepy Hollow (yes, that Sleepy Hollow). Here's the full route.

Here's a neat little writeup of someone who did the same thing. They did it from 210th St. (hey, that's near the Pathmark!), but mention doing it from 225th. It's just over a half-marathon at that distance. With stopping, the author notes it took about 6 and a half hours. Totally doable!

Wish I could join, but alas, work.

I've walked from around 242nd to the Battery before and it took a good 9-6 day to do it. You end up with a really nice sunset over the water. That said, I was with a group of people who were walking fairly slowly and stopped for a while for lunch. I didn't even have blisters at the end of the day. It is a lot of fun to see the neighborhoods changing. The group actually started at the Broadway Bridge at 225th - so you're walking almost the length of Manhattan (Manhattan actually starts North of the bridge in Spuyten Duyvil because the river was rerouted cutting off a bit of Manhattan which refused to be considered part of the Bronx).

There's a group of people (Facebook link, sorry) who do long walks in the NYC area. I haven't actually walked with them but they look like they're doing some great routes. Their activity in the summer is less than other times of year.

If anyone wants to do this again on a weekend when more people are available, I'd definitely be game.

Well, it is now time for me to get some breakfast, pack my backpack and get ready to start walking! 90oF and sunny. Bring on the sunscreen!
