Whiskey Wednesday at the Fountainhead
posted June 8, 2011 9:46 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Wed June 22 at 6:30 PM, Fountainhead
1970 W Montrose Ave, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
Because July 6th is weeks away, and because at least one noted member of the cabal* prefers whiskey to beers, let's meet at Fountainhead on Wednesday, June 22. Known for their amazing beer list (bring your reading glasses) and, well, acceptable food offerings, the Fountainhead also has an impressive collection of whiskeys and a special on Wednesday nights. 6:30. No reservations, but I'll call the day of to let them know how many to expect.

And in case you're worried about the name, they put up a disclaimer on their website.

Man, but I have to walk TWO BLOCKS to get here from my apartment.

Awesome idea!

I have to actually cross the street - though montrose could be really busy that night. I'll do my best.
posted by crankyrogalsky at 7:32 AM on June 9, 2011

In Madison they have red flags in buckets at busy intersections that you use to alert drivers that you're crossing the street. Don't run me down. I'm carrying a flag! God help you if you get to the crosswalk and all the flags are on the other side of the street.
posted by hydrophonic at 8:05 AM on June 9, 2011

We should have a run of smaller version of the MeFi flag and should distribute them amongst ourselves for post meetup street crossings.

How has this been posted for a whole day without my noticing it?!. I have been watching, and waiting, and watching.

Cannot wait for the whiskey and the amuse size bites.

Sorry, I've been out of town. I don't spend my vacation time thinking about meetups, unlike some people I know.

For anyone who hasn't been there before, or has been there and hasn't tried this, allow me to write out the description of the item entitled Monkey Bread:
gooey goodness gorgonzola & bacon pull apart bread. now with a side of sausage gravy, duh.
Duh.
posted by SpiffyRob at 5:33 AM on June 11, 2011

gooey goodness indeed.

Maybe. I like Fountainhead, they're beer tends towards the hoppy, but they have some good stuff, but flying the next day.
posted by eriko at 12:14 PM on June 12, 2011

Oh yes. I love it when ya'll schedule meet-ups at beer bars close to my house on nights I'm not busy.
posted by booknerd at 12:42 PM on June 13, 2011

I like everything about this.

While their monkey bread sounds pretty good to me, it isn't at all like what I know "monkey bread" to be -- which is a breakfast treat which you also pull apart but is made of cinnamon goodness and a mother's love. (Please do not let her know that my partner has improved her recipe.)

Fattening derail aside, I really hope to be able to make it next week.

So, Zaximus, how come you never told us you were actually Joseph Stalin?

I'm really hoping to make this one and meet fellow Mefites for the first time.

Crush? Whiskey? Looking forward?

Computes.

After failing for almost two full years, I'm totally coming to this. How do I find the MeFites if I've never met you before? Is there a sign or something?
posted by juniperesque at 8:27 PM on June 18, 2011

Well, you can search "metafilter chicago" on Flickr and see what some of us look like. Or you can ask the largest group of people in the room which one is eamon, and you'll most likely find us.

This picture has 5 people who will be there in it.

The gentleman furthest to the left is hydrophonic.
Standing next to him is adamdschneider.
Behind the F of the flag is crush-onastick.
Behind her is me.
To my left (the viewer's right), with the beard, and the mouth agape, is eamondaly.

I will probably be there when it starts.

who has the metaflag?
posted by crush-onastick at 11:47 AM on June 19, 2011

I do. We need to declare a standard-bearer. I nominate SpiffyRob.

So I have to have big hairy paws and maul campers? That's what bearing is, right?

Hey folks, if you're down as a maybe, please change it to a yes if you can by Wednesday afternoon so I can give Fountainhead a fountainheads-up. Hopefully they'll put together tables for us down the middle of the main room, but they might also put us in the small room behind the bar.
posted by hydrophonic at 8:27 PM on June 20, 2011

I am a +1. Which I have now indicated in the column to the right.
posted by crush-onastick at 6:13 AM on June 21, 2011

I will be a last minute maybe convert, but have set an alarm to remind me to do so.
posted by eriko at 8:32 AM on June 21, 2011

Hopefully I am worrying for nothing and by worrying out loud I have negated any need for worry because everything will work out fine. But:

Fountainhead is a small place. Fountainhead is a popular place. I do not know if it can really handle 17ish people. I know hydrophonic is calling ahead, but anyone coming later may be wise to check this thread for updates. If, hypothetically only, there was a need for a venue change, the Oakwood is right across the street. It's a piece of crap, but should have plenty of room for us.
posted by SpiffyRob at 1:58 PM on June 21, 2011

Two weeks ago when I posted this I was worried that it would be a bust.

We may have to split up into different tables at the Fountainhead. Fuck me if I'm responsible for a meetup at the Oakwood.
posted by hydrophonic at 3:56 PM on June 21, 2011 [1 favorite]

Please let me know as soon as possible ... I might not have to cross the street after all.
posted by crankyrogalsky at 8:05 PM on June 21, 2011

Late meeting at work today, so there's no way I'll be able to make it back north in time.
posted by booknerd at 8:50 AM on June 22, 2011

Or we can rotate shifts between fountainhead and margies (down the street). Everyone wins.
posted by crankyrogalsky at 9:54 AM on June 22, 2011

Not like Margie's will be any less crowded. Might as well get a table at Glenn's Diner and go for the Crowded Montrose Establishment Trifecta.
posted by SpiffyRob at 10:38 AM on June 22, 2011

I'm down as a yes now. The boyfriend might join later, but don't worry about him in your count. If it's too crowded I can tell him not to come or make him stand in a corner and drink his beer by himself.

And I'm a no. Disaster recovery mode.
posted by eamondaly at 11:53 AM on June 22, 2011

I do have the flag here if someone wants to pick it up from me at work.
posted by eamondaly at 11:53 AM on June 22, 2011

Well now I think I'm the one in the driver's seat for that one. I'll be around about 5:30 to grab it from you.
posted by adamdschneider at 12:16 PM on June 22, 2011

I am a fail. Again. I thought this was July 6.

But for July 6th... I'm there.
posted by juniperesque at 12:47 PM on June 22, 2011

Actually, things have escalated: I need to go home and pick up my car and run around for computer parts, so I won't be in the office. I'll try to remember to bring it July 6th.
posted by eamondaly at 1:28 PM on June 22, 2011

Ok, I just called Fountainhead and told them to expect 15 of us, maybe more. They'll do their best. If you're there early, tell them your with Geof who called ahead.

Tonight is still Whiskey Wednesday, and there's a Trappist brewery event tonight that looks pretty sweet.
posted by hydrophonic at 2:27 PM on June 22, 2011

So it's a small, popular place, and they're having an event tonight?

I am so going back for the Swine Swoon. Only my expanding waistline kept me from ordering it last night on top of the monkey bread.
posted by adamdschneider at 7:49 AM on June 23, 2011

The Swine Swoon is my other go-to there. They used to have this Coffee Jerk Chicken sandwich with pineapple and avocado that was insane, but they took it off the menu.

Here's our receipt from the evening with our server's notes on who ordered what.
