London Meetup

Sun June 12 at 5:00 PM, The Drapers Arms
44 Barnsbury St, Islington, Greater London N1 1, UK (Map & Directions)
12th June, to welcome overseas visitors.
In honour of the fact that we have (seperately) a couple of overseas visitors in London (The Whelk and phunniemee), I propose a meetup of some sort. Probably involving pubs and good beer and stuff.

The Whelk is here on the 12th-13th of June, I'm going to go ahead and suggest the 12th as it's a Sunday.

Anyone got any venue suggestions?

Hey, cool! I'm down for whatever plans you guys make.

Cool! I'm stating at Heathrow however, so I can't be out too late lest I miss the train back,

Otherwise, I'm cool with things.

Me and mine would love to come. Maybe somewhere Islingtonish?

Argh, bugger, I'll be in Germany. Please give my regards to our distinguished visitors.

Yes to meetup, yes to Islington! It's on the way to Heathrow!

.... and I'm going to pipe up for Islington too. Yay Islington! How about The Drapers Arms? Or The Albion? There are droves of really great pubs in Islington ('Pubs in Islington' could be my Mastermind subject), but those two both have lovely gardens and bookable tables.

London rube question: whats an Islington?

If everyone's willing to take a 10 minute walk from Angel tube then I'd like to suggest The Lord Clyde. The environs are cozy, it's not too loud or smothered and the staff is amazing. In my mind it's a perfect pub. Anyone??

The Whelk - London is divided into 32 boroughs, each of which house many neighborhoods. Islington is a pleasant, central-ish borough and gusuallt a convenient place for people of all north London boroughs to meet. We will theoretically be meeting in an area called Angel.
posted by timshel at 4:33 PM on June 2, 2011

I'm not sure what a gusuallt is, by the way. Oye.

I'd be willing to trudge the c. hundred feet from my flat to the Lord Clyde (although to my mind the Marquess is perfecter).

Mr Whelk! I'll be happy to show you.

I'll also be in London at this time. Would love to meet the local crew.

I'll be coming back from my sister's wedding in Bath* on that Sunday, but will be there if physically capable. Apparantly, as the Mad Uncle I'm on Embarrassing Dancing duties. I applied for the post of Cool Uncle, but I was up against a marine biologist and couldn't compete.

*Not a bath. That would be strange.

Islington's fine by me, what sort of time? Afternoon or evening?
posted by TheophileEscargot at 1:22 AM on June 3, 2011

Looking at maps, how about the Drapers Arms, as suggested by HandfulOfDust?

It's very close to Highbury and Islington station, so it would be easy for The Whelk to get the Victoria Line to Green Park then the Picadilly to Heathrow, and for phunniemee to get to Shoreditch High St on the Overground.
posted by Infinite Jest at 1:53 AM on June 3, 2011

I'm good with either pub - they both look sort of equidistant from H&I station. Although, in my head, Highbury is a lot closer to Arsenal tube (which goes straight to Heathrow) than it actually is.

Evening would be better for me as I'm not back in London until the afternoon on Sunday! But I'd be ok with joining late, too.

Camden! Camden! Camden! Can I get a C?
posted by dougrayrankin at 11:16 AM on June 3, 2011

Yeah, how about the Drapers Arms? I think it's a good idea to stay reasonably close to High&I Station, and the Drapers is a ten minute walk (tops) from there. There's always the Compton Arms if we want something a bit more spit and sawdust (and even closer to the tube).

I can offer you an 'N' and an 'O'.

Straight outta Compton (Arms)?

Drapers Arms sounds fine. My favourite Islington pub, the Harlequin, is unfathomably closed on Sundays, else I'd suggest that.
posted by permafrost at 11:52 AM on June 3, 2011

I think we can call it: evening at Drapers Arms. Make it official.
posted by timshel at 1:10 PM on June 3, 2011

OK done. (I just looked at a real map, and it's a bit further away from H&I station than I thought - the map on the pub website made it look like a two minute walk, but it still isn't far).

Put it down for 5pm but anyone should call another time if you think that would work better.

I am so sorry to miss this, but I'll be in New York. The Whelk is a sweetheart, get to meet him if you can.

I was going to be out of town this weekend, but now I'm not! So I might make this meetup- two Metafilter events in two weeks, my goodness!

Also, apparently the best way for me to get to this meetup from where I live is the Overground, which makes it even more exciting because I can finally use the station I walk past every day for more than topping up my Oyster card! Excitement!

Shortly I shall get into a car and depart Liverpool for points South, to London, and this meetup.

ONWARD,

OK, I am going to be a bit late due to an annoying bit of scheduling by certain cinemas that will remain nameless. Probably be there at 6-6.30, by which time it may have stopped pissing down.
posted by permafrost at 3:55 AM on June 12, 2011

Should be there, also by Overground. PROTIP: Check the return times, TFL thinks the very last Overground westbound from Caledonian Road & Barnsbury is at 22:17.
posted by TheophileEscargot at 4:10 AM on June 12, 2011

OK, I have a table booked from 5pm under my name (see profile). I booked for "about 12" but said we might have more or less turning up. They said they had heaps of space anyway.

They serve food from 6.30, see the website for menu.

I am there, sitting at the bar. Dirty "mefi" sign beside me. Table will be ready when lunch crowd leaves.

We are whelk-less!! Forget about the tie and join us.

Unforeseen circumstances are preventing us from being with everyone right now. Hope you're all having fun... :(

I got super lost so I was late, but I had a marvelous time, only now just got in due to ...bus issues. Not my day for travel. Time to be unconscious.
posted by The Whelk at 4:27 PM on June 12, 2011

Oh Whelk, sounds like you had a "Night Bus night" - when you've been in London for a while, you learn to avoid those.

Was great to meet you all (again/for the first time)

And the pub did have chips after all! hurumph : )
posted by memebake at 4:47 AM on June 13, 2011

Oh no, you had to get a bus? I'm so sorry. Thought we'd planned it well enough that you could get back to your hotel by tube. Hope today is better.

Nice to see everyone again/meet the visitors. Shame we confused the pub with our 'turning up at the time we'd booked' and 'wanting to order seperately'. (Last week's pub was more random-mass-of-Mefites-friendly).
posted by Infinite Jest at 5:02 AM on June 13, 2011

The tube was fine! It was the bus at Heathrow that lead to confusing and wailing and lamenting, y'all did great.
