Fri May 20 at 8:00 PM, 92YTribeca
200 Hudson St, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
This is a monthly variety show inspired by the Meet The Lady tumblr blog (a former MetaFilter Project and FPP). The show consists of film/TV clips, live performances, and ribald entertainments, hosted by yours truly. This month we're putting together a purely frivolous tribute to First Ladies.
The show will feature First Lady memoirs performed as monologues by gay men, gossipy surprise guests (spoiler: hear all about mefite schmegegge's experience working for New York's First-Lady-In-Waiting, Sandra Lee) and cinematic portrayals of the FLOTUS in action!

IMPORTANT: Dress as your favorite first lady and win a prize in our costume contest!

Monologues performed by:

John Epperson (who is also the drag legend Lypsinka)

Performer and nightlife impresario Will Clark

Comedian Shawn Hollenbach

Nick Chase (writer and director of The Shells Show)

Peter J. Cook (co-founder of NYC's "Terrible Baby Theater Company")

Opera singer Cory Clines

Also: snacks by The Food Daddy (aka Cas Marino), burlesque by Iris Explosion, and perfume samples from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab!

92YTribeca is walking distance from the A,C,E,1,N,Q,R, and W trains. There's a cafe attached to the screening room that sells food, beer, and wine which you can bring into the screening room. -- and we always party afterward. Let's hang out!

Check the MTA website before you head out, folks. I'm not sure the W is running that weekend.

The W doesn't exist at all anymore, so probably not.

Shit, does anyone know where I can buy a terno dress in New York?

What's a terno dress?

OMG Sonya. I think you need to email Manila Luzon from Drag Race season 3!

As for me, I'll be serving up some major Barbara Bush shoulder-pad REALNESS in a gorgeous champagne skirt-suit.

Yea, I think my terno search isn't going to magically produce one in time for this. I might have to go for business-casual Imelda. I'm going to see if I can hot glue gun and cardboard some terno-style sleeves on a bolero or make a pair I can slip on like those floaties kids wear at the pool and wear it with a maxi dress. Hmmm, maybe I should try and get in touch with Manila. She might have some tips for this.

Unfortunately, this MTL is happening right after work, so all of this is actually happening or not is totally going to depend on how much of this outfit is Voltron-able to bring to work. I really don't feel like trying to explain why I'm dressed like Imelda Marcos to coworkers all day Friday.

You've been there a while -- why would they even think to ask?

Hmm... I wonder if I could find an old fashioned beauty parlor and get my hair "set" like all the mid-20th Century first ladies...

There are a few places here in Greenpoint where I'm sure that's ALL they do.

First prize in the costume contest is a book of First Lady paper dolls, signed by the artist. Many thanks to Tom Tierney for sending them to us!

At Mood today buying fabric and was trying to explain to the young, probably PRATT/FIT/Parsons student working there part-time, why I needed the stiffest of stiff interfacing or a fusible stiffener or something whatever those things are I read about online.

[Salesperson looks skeptically at the interfacing I want]
Salesperson: [in a voice that can only be described as a bored drone] You know, I don't think that's like for wearing? What are you using it for anyway?
Me: No worries, it's not even for real clothes, just some sleeves for a costume. It's so I can make like a, uh, mock terno sleeve?
[puzzled look from her]
Me: Like what Imelda Marcos wears. The traditional dress from the Philippines. It's got this super high stiff shoulder blade...like, I don't know, that metal mohawk on Ultraman's head.
[still puzzled look, but decides to stop asking and pulls out bolt to cut me the piece of interfacing that's probably for like shoes or something]
Salesperson:...wait, is that the lady with like, the shoe problems?
Me:................Ha, uh, yea, I guess you could say she had shoe problems.
Salesperson: Yeeeaaa, my mom used call me me that all the time whenever I'd buy shoes.

Hey! It turns out that Patty McCormack, who played Pat Nixon in "Frost/Nixon" is going to be calling us during the show to chat about her role.

(She was nominated for an Oscar in 1957 for her role as little Rhoda in "The Bad Seed"!)

OMG, would it be weird for me to bring my (book) copy of "The Bad Seed" and have her sign it? =( I mean it's not her movie, but it's the closest I've got. I want it to say something like, "That badge will be mine. Love, Rhoda Penmark."

oh wait, duh, she's calling in....reading comprehension! This is what happens when you sew until 2:30 am.

You should still ask her to sign it, then get angry when she insists she can't through the phone/skype.

Like feign total surprise and be like, "IF YOU CAN SIGN A CREDIT CARD RECEIPT ON A SCREEN WITH A STICK A PLASTIC YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SIGN THIS TOO IF I HOLD IT UP TO THE CAMERA. I DON'T SEE THE PROBLEM HERE. THE FUTURE LADY, GET WITH IT."

I would stand and applaud. Slowly at first, with a gradual crescendo to a raucous outburst of support from the entire crowd. She'd have no recourse but to acquiesce.

Got my ticket, so I guess I'll be there. I've been feeling a bit better today, though if I start coughing uncontrollably, I'll have to excuse myself in what is hopefully not the most embarrassing way possible.
