NC Triangle Meetup January 2025
posted December 1, 2024 12:37 PM   RSS

I went to one meetup in Chapel Hill like 10 years ago and it was great. I'm an introvert but would love to get together with other folks in my area. I'm in Cary. So far people have suggested Sarah's Empanadas or a member's house. If you are better at organizing than me, I'm happy to have help!

I’m in. Also happy to host in Carrboro, if need be. My schedule is easier in January.

I'm interested, but can't until after next week at least.

Have you guys ever tried Sarah's Empanadas? It's between Chapel Hill and Cary, and the empanadas are good. The restaurant seems to be quiet when it's not the lunch rush.

I'm in Hillsborough but pretty flexible. It's been a while!

Oh my gosh, Sarah's! I could meet there. May let's do early January to give a few other people a chance to see this?

I'm closer to Greensboro but would love to come! January sounds good and empanadas sound great. (I'm out of town Jan 2-4 FWIW)

When It's likely that I'll be willing and able to attend Jan 25. It's extremely unlikely that Dec 24 will work for me.

Where Anywhere in the Triangle. I haven't been to Sarah's Empanadas since the teens (at least) but I used to eat lunch there regularly.

Those are some really good empanadas, if memory serves. Haven't been to Sarah's since before the pandemic.

I could do sometime in January. The 25th is doable.

Well, Sarah and her husband sold the restaurant a few years ago. They taught the recipes to the new owners, though, and they're still good. You can also still buy bags of four, frozen, to make at home (15 minutes at 450 degrees F). Don't forget -- the salsa is separate!

I still love it.

Also, though, there's new decor which is a touch more eccentric than before.

Please support Sarah's! If you go before the meetup, I'd love to hear your impressions.

I was at Sarah's Empanadas today and I just can't place their empanadas - they're definitely not Argentinian or Chilean, and Mexican empanadas are listed separately in their menu, so the regular empanadas are not Mexican, either. Does anybody have any idea?

I think if I go there again, I'll be trying the arepas or pupusas instead of the empanadas.

(FYI, excellent Argentinian empanadas can be found at Milonga Argentinian Bakery in Raleigh, and Che Empanadas, also in Raleigh, does a good sweet beef filling with raisins, similar to the Chilean empanada de pino.)

Hey all - My title is confusing. I meant "sometime in Dec 2024 or Jan 2025", not those dates. Oops!

Last time I scheduled a meetup of any kind I used Discord. This seems a bit harder :-)

How about one of these weeks:

Jan 12 - 18
Jan 26 - Feb. 1

Right now I can do lunchtime or evening most days. I like Sarah's, or meeting at a house is nice as thivaia nicely offered. I'm happy to get a private group text or something going. Who's better at this than me?

BTW here's who I have so far:

caviar2d2 (Cary)
thivaia (host?) (Carrboro)
amtho
wens (Hillsboro)
Sweetie Darling (near Greensboro)
kingless
tuesdayschild
research monkey

Unless more are in Cary/Raleigh, doing this in Durham/CH/Carrboro might be better for everyone (especially Sweetie Darling).

caviar2d2, Cary is doable for me! We live in southern Guilford Co and I can come in via 64. My daughter lives in Carrboro, so I wouldn't mind meeting there because I could pop in to see her. Google Maps says it's a little over an hour from my house to Sarah's Empanadas, which is fine too.

I may have to travel Jan 16-17, but any other date in the weeks you suggested would work for me. I have a slight preference for an early evening get-together, although I can generally make a lunch work if that's better for the group.

Ok folks - later this week (after Christmas) I'll check for more responses and figure something out. You can all memail me and I'll give my email/text number.

Hey, if planning for this is still going on, I’d be interested in something the week of Jan 26th…

I'd be interested, too.

(And through judicious googling I found out that Sarah's Empanadas makes Bolivian empanadas! That explains potatoes being in the filling. Pupusas and arepas as well as Colombian empanadas seem to be additions from the current owners.)
