Fri September 13 at 3:00 PM, Trillium Lake Campground
Trillium Lake, Oregon, USA (Map & Directions)

THESE SITES GET SNAPPED UP FAST

That said, there's still lots of available sites for that weekend.

Saying maybe just because I haven’t reserved my site yet- I’ll take a look at what’s available later today. Yay!

Friday the 13th you say??? I sense a horror movie coming. Teenagers will die.

I got #57.
posted by bendy at 3:51 PM on March 15, 2019

And I got site 55. YAY! Looking forward to it - it'll be nice to get off the coast for a few days!

Hey in other PNW camping meetup news, let me put in a plug for Nehalem Bay State Park. It is just absolutely gorgeous and the campground is basically right on the beach. During the winter it's surprisingly deserted and peaceful and you can bring your horse. Or fly in. Or if you have neither plane nor horse, you can lie in at your campsite listening to the waves which are about 50 feet away. It's awesome.

That sounds pretty great, you should definitely call an IRL camping event one of these days!

Looking forward to seeing you in Sept.

Also, a couple of weeks before this event I'll set up a Google Docs spreadsheet to coordinate meals, equipment, etc.

We got site 52!

For anyone else who's interested, there are still nearby sites available at the moment.
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:15 AM on March 18, 2019 [1 favorite]

Only nearby site left is 53, though there are still sites available in other areas of the campground.
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:23 PM on April 5, 2019

And I just booked #53, yay!

I picked up this book on the recent "support your local small bookstore" day! I didn't realize there was a whole website of stuff too. But suffice it to say I will have some food ideas by the time this trip rolls around.

I had to laugh that the French name of their "French dish" (pate Chinois) is literally "Chinese pie", which Google Translate translates as "Shepherd's Pie" (which it actually is, looking at the recipe)...which is of UK origin! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:02 PM on May 5, 2019

I was so mystified by "pate Chinois" that I tried again to find out how it got named that, and it turns out Wikipedia came through for me.

In any case, I'm looking forward to everyone's food ideas! I'll update this post sometime around the end of August so we can plan meals.

I'm trying to find a campsite. It looks like I can reserve the amphitheater. Let's put on A PLAY!!
posted by bendy at 1:06 AM on July 30, 2019

What's the deal with the walk-up sites? I can't seem to reserve one but there's no guarantee that they'll be there.
posted by bendy at 1:09 AM on July 30, 2019

Yeah, walk-up sites can't be reserved, they're just first-come-first-serve on any given day. But you said you already reserved #57 back on March 15, so unless you canceled it you should be still good to go?
posted by Greg_Ace at 9:01 AM on July 30, 2019

Alas, I know I expressed an intention to attend this year, but I have concert tickets for the 14th. Maybe just Friday night?
posted by mimo at 12:58 PM on July 30, 2019

You're certainly welcome to come and stay as much or as little as you like. There should be room for an additional tent on one of the already-reserved sites if you want to stay overnight.
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:12 PM on July 30, 2019

Haha, so I did! Thanks, Greg!

Mimo, you can share my site for as much time as you want to spend with us. Bring that Turkish spindle...
posted by janell at 9:52 PM on July 31, 2019

Yep, mimo, you could come Friday and then hang out on Saturday!
posted by Secretariat at 2:02 PM on August 1, 2019

Site 50 opened up for Fri Sept 13 so I booked it! If anyone else (mimo et al) are coming up just for the night should be plenty of extra room.

Just two weeks left until The Thing!!!

Be sure to add any meals you want to make or contribute to, along with any special equipment you're bringing or need someone to bring, to the food and equipment planning spreadsheet. I slotted myself in for Texas chili Friday evening, which I plan to make ahead of time so all it needs is heating up. It's mainly meat with beans though, so if there are any vegans/vegetarians coming please speak up since it wouldn't be hard to make some no-meat-style as well.
posted by Greg_Ace at 7:17 PM on August 30, 2019

I should also add that many if not most of the sites we've reserved could hold a second tent, so if you're just now thinking how much fun it'd be to hang out in a gorgeous spot and eat good food and stare at a campfire, we could probably squeeze you in somewhere...so don't hesitate to speak up.

food and equipment planning spreadsheet

Greg_Ace that's a helluva spreadsheet.
posted by bendy at 7:53 PM on August 30, 2019

I've managed to hone it a bit over the last few years of organizing Metafilter campouts...
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:02 PM on August 30, 2019

I added to the spreadsheet - I am in fact a pescetarian / vegetarian but it is really NBD - I always end up bringing way too much food camping and I will have plenty to share as well! Also noted on the spreadsheet, I am bringing a big canopy/pop up tent. It's 10 x 10 and has sides that can go on or off. I call it Camelot and perhaps it will be handy? I need one other person to set it up and tear it down; it's not hard or heavy, just bulky and awkward.
posted by mygothlaundry at 2:06 PM on August 31, 2019

Camelot!

That looks fantastic and I'm sure any of us will be willing to assist with it. Especially for the promise of local smoked salmon!!
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:55 PM on August 31, 2019

NEW SPREADSHEET LINK!! (the one at the top of the post is also fixed) The link in my previous comment no longer works.
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:01 PM on September 1, 2019

ok, finally looking at this thread from not-my-phone to update the spreadsheet.
posted by janell at 3:50 PM on September 7, 2019

Looks like fall may be coming a bit early to that area - we'll want to dress in layers and bring rain jackets. Camelot might make a good prep kitchen (minus the actual camp stoves), and it's clear that plenty of good hearty food will be in order!
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:50 AM on September 9, 2019

I think secretariat and cortex also have a canopy thingy -- maybe they can bring theirs too if the rain forecase continues.
posted by janell at 1:32 PM on September 9, 2019

The abode is currently redolent with the heady yet pungent aroma of dried toasted chilies. Don't worry though, I deliberately left the fiery peppers out and only used the mild flavorful ones. I'll have the spicier kind on hand as an optional condiment for those who dare (i.e. me). And if even the un-fiery version is problematic, I'll also have sour cream as another condiment/side dish, which is proven to counteract the heat.

But I'm torn between cornbread (which could be considered a bit more "traditional") and garlic bread (because hey, garlic!)...thoughts?
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:52 PM on September 9, 2019

Life has overwhelmed me; I'm not going to try to smush this in there as well. I intend to get this on my radar earlier next time so that I don't schedule everything at the same time again.
posted by mimo at 10:37 AM on September 10, 2019

I love cornbread! And I think we will also throw our canopy thing in the car because hey why not, there will be space. That way we can have both a cooking space and a sitting space if there does end up being rain sometime when we're not sleeping.
posted by Secretariat at 5:18 PM on September 10, 2019

Me and Secretariat are gonna have to bail on for-reals camping after all, it's turned out; just too much other stuff going on to feel practical this weekend. If it's workable we might be able to zip out for a day trip on Saturday to hang out for a while, though.

We're happy to send along the canopy with someone else though if y'all want to use it.
posted by cortex at 1:57 PM on September 11, 2019

I'm sorry to hear that! Hopefully you can make it out Saturday.
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:57 PM on September 11, 2019

Well, dammit-- woke up with a scratchy throat this morning and it seems to be turning into a full-on cold. Really sorry to have to bail (esp in the wake of others who can't make it) but colds tend to head bronchitis-wards for me if I don't take it easy, so probably best if I sit this one out. Sorry!
posted by Kat Allison at 3:34 PM on September 11, 2019

Oh dear - feel better soon!
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:38 PM on September 11, 2019

So given the weather, I'm thinking I might bail on Saturday evening to avoid taking down in the rain on Sunday bc I hate that. I'll leave you with breakfast foods/gear if I bug out (and I might stay? Who knows?). See you tomorrow afternoon!
posted by janell at 5:09 PM on September 12, 2019

According to the latest forecast Sunday will be cloudy with 50% chance of showers, which doesn't sound too terrible. I'll continue to hope for the best and deal with the rest. At least Saturday looks to be dry, if not sunny.

Check-in time is 2:00, so I'm shooting to be there between 2-3pm (not that I"m anxious to get out in the woods or anything...). I'm at site 56.
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:30 PM on September 12, 2019

Ah but my weather source shows 40% chance of rain on Saturday night and 90% on Sunday day. In any case, I'll see you soon.
posted by janell at 7:20 PM on September 12, 2019

Well I will be there! I have 2 new tires on the truck, the camper water pump has been replaced and I am psyched! Broke, but psyched. Also I am bringing a container of glow bracelets, so, really, we’ll have everything. ;D
posted by mygothlaundry at 7:47 PM on September 12, 2019

I probably won’t get there until like 4. I am going to try to leave early but I know myself, so, yeah, 4ish.
posted by mygothlaundry at 7:48 PM on September 12, 2019

I’ll be there around 8-9 pm on Friday!

I'm actually going to get enough work done to come! I'll try to leave PDX late afternoon, will bring stuff for hot coffee if the morning is chilly and make a stop for snacks/accessories. I need to be back in Portland Saturday afternoon but will plan on sticking around through lunch. Looking forward to it!

It took me longer than expected to get on the road. New arrival time about 4.

I am here and mostly set up. I am on site 54 (but I accidentally told them 56, Greg, if they give you any grief). About to head for wood and water, but feel free to come by whenever you arrive. I have many snacks.
posted by janell at 3:30 PM on September 13, 2019

Spoke too soon and am still bogged down with work stuff. I'll be showing up pretty late if at all :/

posted by Greg_Ace at 9:50 AM on September 14, 2019

Thanks everyone for coming! And I hope those of you who weren't able to make it can join us for the next one.

The few (fool-) hardy Sunday morning remainers managed to get mostly packed up before the rain, which graciously waited until 9:30 or so to start lightly sprinkling, though the trip home was pretty wet.
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:10 PM on September 15, 2019

I am so glad you didn’t get soaked. It started raining here overnight.

It was fun to see you all! Thanks for organizing, Greg.

Made it back to the coast! Torrential rain from Trillium
Lake to Longview but just sprinkles after that, phew. Thanks y’all for all the fun and food and organizing and putting up with Harvey’s antics! We had a great time.
posted by mygothlaundry at 2:04 PM on September 15, 2019 [1 favorite]

I slept until 12:45 on Saturday afternoon but as soon as the first drop of rain hit my tent at 9 AM Sunday I was up and out. I made it home by 10:30.

As always, thanks to Greg_Ace for pulling together all the little details and bringing enough of everything to share. Next year the Dutch oven lasagna will not be so crispy in the cheese region.
posted by bendy at 4:36 PM on September 15, 2019 [1 favorite]

I'm really sad to have missed this--I'd rented a tent and everything!--but staying home was the right call (I've been huddled in bed all weekend, hacking my lungs up and streaming phlegm and marathoning Broadchurch). Next time for sure!
