Geeks Who Drink is bringing Geek Bowl to Boston this year, and it's time for the Taters to show the world what they know! As the event happens to be a few days before my birthday, DiscourseMarker and I are counting this as my birthday party and will cover the tickets for up to two Tater teams of six people each (tickets can only be bought in sixes). Please RSVP as soon as you can so that I know that whether we can fill out two teams, thanks! SEE BELOW FOR IMPORTANT LOGISTICAL UPDATE 2/14.

Since we're now at 11 and 1 let's say that's are 12 pending Rustic Etruscan's availability, and we can look for an alternate if he's not able. I think the fairest thing is to divide into two teams based on RSVP order, so one team would be me through Diablevert and one Cogito through RE. each team needs to register and provide a main and backup contact person. I can handle that forTteam 1 but I'll need a couple volunteers to be the contacts for Team 2.

I'll register and be primary contact for team Twoters. Did you get general floor seats or fixed seating in the stands, Horace Rumpole?

Any volunteers for backup contact?
posted by Cogito at 1:03 PM on December 25, 2017

Thanks, Cogito. I got us General Admission Floor seats.

Tickets purchased. Unfortunately there were no floor tickets available, so we're in the stands. I registered as Taters II: Electric Boogaloo. If anyone wants to be the backup contact, you can email and give them your contact info.

Horace Rumpole (or DiscourseMarker) , you can MeMail me to arrange for the payment. That's super generous of y'all to cover the costs.

Oh, heck, Cogito, I already bought 12 tickets, I just meant that somebody needed to register the other team. This is a longshot, but is there any possibility of cancellation? If not, we'll still cover it and I guess we can try to find some more folks to play.

Howdy! I'll be moving out that way in about a week and would love to join in if you have the room. If not, can't wait to meet everyone at another meetup.

I can provide references for my trivia cred if need be.

Gah! Sorry for the confusion, Horace Rumpole; my mistake. I contacted TicketMaster and they were about as helpful as you'd anticipate. I've emailed Geeks Who Drink to see if there's anything they can do, and I'll let you know.

I’m happy to be a/the backup contact for taters II, I’ll email the geekbowl email address that Cogito provided now to confirm it

Hey, I'd love to participate if it's not too late! I'm new in town and eager to get to know a new batch of mefites IRL!

It looks like I'll probably be in town then - feel free to me-mail me if anyone would be interested in fielding another team.

According to the website, there's going to be a "warmup" event the Thursday prior (the 15th) at Asgard, starting at 9 pm, if anyone is interested. Looks like they want teams to register for that, plus a $5 cash donation per person (goes to their charity and only teams that donate are eligible for prizes that night).

Is anyone going to the pre-party? I probably won't venture out on my own, but if anyone is definitely going and looking for more friendly faces, I'd probably tag along
posted by seemoorglass at 8:19 AM on February 6, 2018

I am more interested in a "warm up" than the pre-party, I think? But there's a good chance I might decide I am too tired to go to either depending on work that day.

Cogito, were you successful in canceling your tickets?
posted by maryr at 2:58 PM on February 6, 2018

I could do the warm up if people are down

I could too

OK, Taters, here's the lowdown: we will field two teams, grouped by RSVP (*=team contacts)

Can't Stop the Taters: Horace Rumpole*, DiscourseMarker*, Hypatia, firechicago, backseatpilot, Diablevert

Taters II: Electric Boogaloo: Cogito*, seemoorglass*, maryrussell, pickles_have_souls, maryr, holmesian

I have a lengthy logistical email from Geeks Who Drink that you may find useful--please MeMail me with a good address for me to forward it to. I will also include my phone number so that you can text me day of if you're running late or have trouble locating the group.

Here's the general plan. DiscourseMarker and I will print out all 12 Tater tickets and arrive at Agganis Arena at 6:00pm. We will be stationed inside the southwest entrance off Comm Ave, nearest the Pleasant Street T stop. We'll hand you your ticket so you can get in. Please arrive no later than 6:30 so we're at our tables for the 7:00 start. Team Can't Stop the Taters is at table 17--Cogito, can you post where Taters II is?

A couple of other notes from GWD: No bags larger than 12"x12"x6". Stadium concessions will be available, but you may want to eat dinner beforehand. Bring ID if you want to drink.

Once again, MeMail me your address for the full GWD email.

Hey y'all,

Taters II is table number 33. See you tomorrow!

And yes, maryr, I did manage to get my refund. Hooray for GWD prevailing upon the evil TicketMaster and hooray for Horace Rumpole treating us all for his birthday!

Can’t Stop The Taters is at table 17; despite the numerical difference they are close to each other.

Yay, I am looking forward to Tater-ing it up with you all tomorrow!
posted by maryrussell at 7:25 PM on February 16, 2018

We have arrived at the arena and are stationed just inside the southwest door off Comm Ave.

Oh fiddlesticks, needed to arrange live play by play of this event. Is it wrapping up, did we crush the competition?

No. Solid middle of the pack placement.
