Parade Route Meetup

Sun March 6 at 11:00 AM, Parade Route in front of Columns Hotel
3811 St Charles Ave, New Orleans, LA, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's pick a Mardi Gras parade and have a Meetup along the route!
One of the smaller parades makes the most sense to me, because the craziness of the parade won't overpower the Meetup, and because people probably don't have formal plans for them already. A location near a bar would be nice, I suppose.

My first two ideas are Carrollton Sunday (noon Feb. 27) somewhere on St. Charles between Louisiana and Napoleon (Delachaise, Columns, Mayfair, Milan Lounge are all close by) or Druids (Wednesday Mar. 2, 6:30 pm) at Le Bon Temps. Anybody interested and have other ideas for date and location?

I'm going to be getting into New Orleans the evening of March 3rd and will be in town through the 13th. If anyone has any ideas for that span, I'll try to make it.

I think that with your limitations Brundlefly, the best options would be Saturday morning uptown or Sunday morning uptown(pre-Bacchus). Sunday will be busier than Saturday on the uptown route. Saturday is Endymion though too so that will influence people's plans.

Ok. My plans are open at this point. Although I should say, don't let my limitations be too much of a deciding factor in this. I know it's a busy time for everybody (and I'll be trying to cram in as many things as possible)!

Both of the dates in the OP work for me.

Checking in for recent activity purposes. Can't say when I'll be free because of work, but if there's something going on when I can come I'd love to!

I'm definitely interested for one of the weekend parades as I'll be coming in from out of town.

Both dates are good for me!

Would love such a thing. The weekend would definitely be better for me than a mid-week parade, for what it's worth. Been wanting to go to a meetup for some time now.

If the weather's good by late February, maybe a sort of picnic would be just as good as a bar?

Seeing as I live here, I can certainly come by whichever, whenever. Other than that I have no real preference.

I'm hitting town to visit friends and family from the 4th to the 13th....I can come a few days earlier, but those are the best dates!

It seems to be looking like either the Saturday morning the 5th or Sunday morning the 6th parades might work for most people. We have plenty of time to firm up plans, but maybe we'll starting thinking in terms of one of those two dates, and potential attendees can comment on which works best for them as work schedules, travel plans, etc. become more concrete?

As for me, either date would work but I would slightly prefer Saturday.

I live not close to Napoleon and St. Charles, so all of ideas mentioned by the OP would be perfect. I've never been part of a meetup but when better to start than during Mardi Gras? I'm available for just about any parade after Krewe du Vieux.

This sounds great. I'll try my best to make it.

How does Sunday the 6th look for everyone?

OK Sunday morning it is. Okeanos starts at 11:00 am, with Mid-City and Thoth to follow. How about if we meet at the intersection of St. Charles and Gen. Taylor, sidewalk side. It will be pretty busy but this intersection has a few nice trees and their roots prohibit people from getting too many ladders up, and it's near several bars. If anyone has another idea for location, please post it.

How will we know each other?

Even though their mixed drinks are suspiciously weak, I have a big ol' soft spot for the Columns (that side yard! that other-very-secret side yard! the taxidermy! the COLUMNS! I think I just love how it makes me feel like I'm in a living J.Crew catalog). But that's lakeside of our meeting spot. I guess we can congregate riverside/sidewalk and just run back and forth for drinks, or to the Mayfair.

I can make a poster board sign or somethin' for the meetup

Also, what's our ETA? Yes I realize this is New Orleans we're talking about.
posted by mostly vowels at 7:41 PM on February 22, 2011

I'm sorry, but I'm a neutral ground side paradegoer. You guys have fun. I'll wave.
posted by komara at 7:02 AM on February 23, 2011

If I wore shirts with things on them I'd have one of these.

Okay but seriously though I do like the area around Gen Taylor, I do like the Columns (though I've never been to either of these side yards that mostly vowels mentions), and there are several bars on the river side of St. Charles in that area that we can hit up if necessary. I just hope I can make it to an early parade on Sunday.
posted by komara at 7:04 AM on February 23, 2011

I was thinking sidewalk side because in the intersection people can't put up ladders and the crowd generally doesn't get as deep, and there are more bathroom opportunities. I'm not the world's biggest Columns fan so I hadn't even factored that in, but yes it's a very good meeting point. I'm going to BYOB (soft cooler or backpack) so the proximity to drinks isn't as much of a concern for me, however, I have a friend in Mid City on sidewalk side so I'll definitely be going across at some point.

Okeanos is on the long Uptown route and scheduled to start at 11, so I think an ETA of 11 or 11:30 will give us plenty of time to get together. Maybe Mostly Vowels and I can pledge to be at the Columns with her sign at 11?.
posted by CheeseLouise at 7:19 AM on February 23, 2011

Will do.

Do we need to change this from a "proposed" meetup to a confirmed meetup?

I was going to be staying with friends in Metarie. What would be the best way to get into town(and get out)?
posted by roguewraith at 10:42 AM on February 28, 2011

Easiest would be for your friends to drop you off and pick you up, or to ride in with them. Is that an option? They'll know the best routes in and out.

Next easiest will be a Metairie cab if you can get one. Getting back out to Metairie will be more difficult if you're relying on a cab, depending on the time. During Bacchus you might be able to get a cab pretty easily, but afterwards will be a pain.

I've never done public transit between Jefferson and Orleans so I can't comment on that, and I would imagine that it's a nightmare during Mardi Gras anyway.

Anyone have any other suggestions?
posted by CheeseLouise at 7:45 AM on March 1, 2011

I mean... there is public transit. But you would have to navigate two bus systems and do it while I'm sure your thought processes would be impaired. So I'm going to have to second getting a cab.

Note to everyone here: if you end up alone and needing a cab this Mardi Gras, do NOT hail one. Call United at 504.522.9771, Program this into your phone and if you need to pay for a ride somewhere, do it from these guys.
posted by Night_owl at 8:50 AM on March 1, 2011

Agreed. United Cab is a lifesaver in whatever way you wish to take that. During the thick of Mardi Gras it'll be hell to hail one. Just call. Put the number in your phone.
posted by komara at 10:38 AM on March 1, 2011

Yes, I should have been more specific when I said you might be able to get a cab pretty easily - I mean that it might be a relatively slow time for United and they'd be able to get to you, not to just hail a random cab. However, United can be difficult to get a hold of too. There's a second number in addition to the one posted by Night Owl - 504.524.9606 - that you can try along with the first one.

All of this said, I'd hate to have to rely on a cab to get back to Metairie. I would really try to get your friends to pick you up if at all possible. Offer to pay them $30 or whatever it takes to be sure of a reliable ride home.

So can we get a head count? I'd love to know how many cookies to bring.

People can click on that nifty "attending" button up at the top of the screen. Surely I'm not the only one planning on it...
posted by mostly vowels at 8:35 PM on March 1, 2011

I really wish I could be more committal, but any plans I make tend to go out the window after about 5:00 this evening until the trucks start rolling Tuesday. But it is very close by the house, I may try to walk up there.

I have to work for 2, but I'll try to stop by.

Probably not going to be able to make it out for the morning parades, but we're definitely going to Bacchus. If anyone wants to meet up then, send me a memail and we can exchange phone numbers or whatever.

P.S. My girlfriend typed this for me because I was too drunk to spell.

In case anyone is coming late we are moving across the street to the apt at the corner of gen taylor and st Charles. Mefi msg me for my number if you are looking us.

My apologies, but marching d'Etat left me wiped out, and I slept way late this morning. I hope you all are having fun!

Just got to work after meeting with CheeseLouise, mostly vowels, brundlefly, and roguewraith. It was a ton of fun!

The best part was standing in the middle of the street yelling, "Jessamyn?! Does anyone here know Matt Haughey?!" and getting zero response. Then I sat down to pull out my laptop to try to get internet, and saw the sign. Yay me!

It was really, really great meeting all of you guys, and I hope to see you again before I head back to California. Too bad we didn't think to take pictures until later, so Night_owl and CheeseLouise are not represented, but I'm uploading the few I took right now.

Hey guys, if you missed us this time, some of us towards the end were making sounds about meeting up during the Irish Channel parade route. If anyone's interested, mefi mail me and I'll keep you in the loop should something develop!

Nice to meet everyone.

That should be, Irish Channel St Patricks Day parade route (this coming weekend after Mardi Gras)

Frak how did I miss this thread?

Well, apparently The Whelk is coming to town so if we want another excuse to try and meet up without the craziness of Carnival getting in our way, we could try that.

Hope everyone had a happy and safe Mardi Gras.

It was nice to meet everyone! Sorry I missed the photos.

As for St. Pat's, some friends and I have a big party every year at Magazine and 6th. All are welcome. If you're interested, memail me for more detailed address info.
