This Salon ... we're gonna go there ... and talk about political correctness. Come one, come all to freely and gently explore the pros and cons of modern PC. Our next meeting is Friday, July 22, 2016 at 7:30 PM in Brooklyn.
This month we'll be chatting about modern “political correctness”—or what some might call PC2, since there was an earlier version in the late 80s/early 90s.

I’ve recently been reading articles both for pleasure and professional reasons on issues cropping up on college campuses related to free speech, speech codes, multiculturalism, microaggressions, trauma and trigger warnings, campus speaker “disinvitings," Title IX and Title VII, and the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), which is a non-profit first amendment stalwart, much like the ACLU, only for higher education.

Knowing these issues are contentious on certain parts of Metafilter (and elsewhere), I hesitated to make political correctness the subject of a Salon, but it finally occurred that that reaction was an outgrowth of the issue itself. After delving into the topic for several months, my takeaway is that what makes PC2 distinct from earlier political movements … is that PC2 seeks to suppress free speech, rather than engage with it. On a personal level, I find that astonishing. But I also think there is a purpose to political correctness, even if I don’t always agree with its tactics. What do you think?

If you want to join in, please email me at NewSalonNYC@gmail.com for directions to the meeting and a list of the articles for the upcoming Salon. If I haven't met you before, please tell me some tidbit about yourself in your note. If you can't attend this session, but would like to be on the Master List to keep up on future Salons, let me know when you write. Otherwise please make clear if you're RSVPing for this time.

For those new to Salons, it's worth saying that our version is fairly loose in structure. Though we mostly tend to keep on topic, we don't always. And although conversation is usually based on the articles, not everyone reads them. So if you're curious, but shy, don't worry, just tap out a brief note to get involved. We're a friendly bunch, always on the look out for more clever Mefites and their friends.

Hope to see you there!
