Picnic in the gardens

Sat May 28 at 1:00 PM, Untermyer Park and Gardens
945 N Broadway, Yonkers, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Come to the gardens in Yonkers where I work and have a potluck picnic. As an outside event that depends heavily on weather, the date for this event could easily change. So definitely check here before heading out the door!
The gardens are in Yonkers and are most easily reached by car, bus or Metro North. Our website has detailed directions. Note that if you're taking the bus, the Beeline uses NYC's metrocard and accepts transfers from the subway at the northern terminus of the 1 line (242nd and Broadway). In the past, there were drivers coming from NYC and my husband also picked up people from the Greystone Metro North train station - hopefully we can do this again as the walk from the train station is quite uphill. Trains run approximately once an hour and the train ride which is along the banks of the Hudson River is one of the most beautiful train rides I've enjoyed. Try to get a seat on the west side of the train to get the best views.

The gardens have public restrooms, and parts are wheelchair accessible - the area we are planning on picnicking is accessible if person with the wheelchair doesn't mind a bit of off-road action. Or we could change the picnic location.

We will be picnicking on Saturday, May 28th which is the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend.

We should plan to meet around 1pm and picnic and I'd be happy to show people around the place after lunch.

This is a public park so there is no admission fee. Things that are not permitted: dogs and alcohol. Kids are definitely welcome. I tend to invite non-mefite friends and family, so feel free to bring a +1 or +n.

I now have a baby, so you will likely get to meet the little guy.

Any of those Saturdays are fine by me.

I'm excited! Those days all work for me except the 28th.

I wanted to mention that I always invite non-mefite friends (and family) to this - so you all are really welcome to bring nice non-mefite people as well.

I vote for the 21st then, so we have the following Saturdays as rain dates.

I'm a bit sad that I'll be away on all the dates mentioned because this would have been the perfect first ever meetup for me!

theappleonatree - you're welcome to stop by the gardens anytime and say hello.

I'm waiting on a couple of non-metafilter people to see if they can make it on specific dates. Once I have that info, I'll update with a date and a raindate.

Count us in! The 28th and 4th are fine.

Waiting on one more person, but right now the 28th is looking likely.

Oh, just noticed this got confirmed for the 28th.

I will most likely make deviled eggs, and stop by Trader Joe's and/or Whole Foods on the way to the GW Bridge. Don't know if I'll be there in time to help with driving people from the Metro-North station to the park, but I'll do my best.

Summer weather is here at last, just in time for the picnic! Any of you Maybe's joining the Yes side?

We're going to bring beverages - water, non-caffeinated soda and caffeinated soda are the likely options. And I think I'm going to make chickpea salad if the kid obliges.

Looking forward to this quite a bit. Work has been crazy and I can't wait to sit and enjoy things as a visitor as opposed to a worker!

We are too!

If anyone needs a ride from the train station, contact me via memail and I'll give you a phone number to call so we can send someone to pick you up.
We have beverages, plates, cups, plastic cutlery, a chickpea salad in the making and a 3.5 month old kid.

Heading out shortly to see what munchies there are at Trader Joe's to bring along with the eggs. Will the picnic spot be in the same area as last year?
posted by oh yeah! at 7:41 AM on May 28, 2016

Yes. The field between the Temple of Love and the Rock Garden. Look for the gate painted yellow in the fence.

Either I'm here first or I've forgotten which spot we were in last year - do I go in towards the water feature and take a left down the stairs? Or do I go to the left of the bathrooms, between the little flags planted in the grass? (Hitting the ladies room now, if anyone comes searching)

So sad I couldn't make it; hope it was lovely!

Another wonderful picnic in the gardens with the good people. And I got to play with babies!

Wow did it start pouring once I got across the GW Bridge, that could have been a soggy picnic. I could see the clouds were doing something interesting when I did my last walk around of picture-taking, but I wasn't expecting a deluge.

Thanks for organizing again, sciencegeek.

thanks for coming in the sweltering heat!

(and for playing with babies and hanging out with a motley crew of people from all parts of my life)
