Fri November 13 at 6:00 PM, Erskineville Hotel
102 Erskineville Rd, Erskineville NSW 2043, Australia (Map & Directions)
Anyone keen on an end-of-year meetup?
I've been in Sydney four years but haven't been able to make it to any meetups. I'd love the chance to meet some Mefites in person!

I'm personally flexible on times, but perhaps 6.00 pm on Friday 13th November as a starting point? Anyone care to suggest a pub or similar in a central location?

Edit: Table confirmed for 6pm under the name of Metafilter; Erskineville Hotel - 102 Erskineville Rd. Close to Newtown station.

Friday the 13th sounds auspicious to me.
posted by misfish at 1:04 AM on October 14, 2015

I will try to make it. I have compulsory work drinks that evening, but I don't suppose they'll go late, so I can come join yous after and keep my blood alcohol from dipping too low.
posted by lollusc at 1:36 AM on October 14, 2015

Well, I'm also fine rescheduling to another day where more peeps can make it. I basically have nothing scheduled that far ahead anyway
posted by Quilford at 1:52 AM on October 14, 2015

Yes, yes, a thousand times yes! Friday the 13th works for me.
posted by His thoughts were red thoughts at 2:26 AM on October 14, 2015

Don't even think about rescheduling on my account. I think I can probably make it (which would not be true for most other Fridays in the next couple of months), and I truly have no objections to two lots of drinks in a row!

Let me check with the fambo, should be fine. :)

It has to start at the Erko [inaugural] - ten long years this past March (or not, there was some light flak).
Count me in anyways.

The erko menu looks bloody fantastic. I could probably be persuaded to share one of those gigantic mai tais, too.
posted by smoke at 3:47 AM on October 15, 2015

Well I'm certainly not going to object to the Erko, it is disgustingly close to me
posted by Quilford at 5:59 AM on October 15, 2015

I love that they have a menu called "fancy drinks". I'm going to order one and feel fancy.

Or I would totally share a giant mai tai too.

(Yes, I plan my orders a month in advance: why do you ask?)
posted by lollusc at 6:03 AM on October 15, 2015

The first thing I ask my colleagues when I get into work is pretty much "what are you having for lunch today?", followed five minutes later by "what are you having for dinner?". It''s the kind of thing I think where you get it, or you don't.
posted by smoke at 2:26 PM on October 15, 2015 [1 favorite]

Well, it looks like there's a fair bit of consensus for the Erskineville Hotel (pdf menu). Anyone know if they take bookings for tables?

I'd like to come! And (checks calendar- tumbleweed drifts past) I sure can.... though being something of a hermit and all I have to admit to being kinda scared.

But I will Try My Utmost not to pike on y'all!

I was scared my first time, too. After the initial pain, the whole experience was quite pleasurable, I assure you. ;)

Also, central location means escape is simple. Red Thoughts, I trust you'll bring the zip ties?
posted by smoke at 1:43 AM on October 17, 2015

Caramel fudge is my nickname for you.

I am more of a mocha shade. During summer, I vary from milk chocolate to 60% cocoa dark chocolate.

I am also known in some circles as "Chocolate Thunder".

Settle down, Smoke. You'll startle the horses.

Also, gaff tape is way more secure.

The Erko has a menu! I joked but now I loved. See you all then.

Apparently you made imaginary fudge last time at Taff's. This time I don't mind whether it's caramel or chocolate, but would prefer it not to be imaginary, thanks.

Philby, don't pike! We are all hermits at heart. But socialising is much easier and even fun after a bucket of mai tais. Or so I've heard. From a friend. Allegedly.
posted by lollusc at 1:29 AM on October 18, 2015 [1 favorite]

Wow "making imaginary fudge" sounds like a total euphemism. I didn't mean it that way, but if I abuse the edit function, a mod will show up and beat me with a stick, so please to read my last comment innocently only.

Greg, I want to know how you found this thread. Do you have your geographical radius set to "entire world"? Or do you get so bored at work that you read all the IRL threads once you finish the blue and the green?

Or were you googling your surname with some weird extra regex thing going on?
posted by lollusc at 5:37 PM on November 10, 2015

i cannot come to this because of geographical distance, but i just wanted to thank you all for making this thread, which will now lead to me referring to my own home as "The Erko"

Don't be soft. There's plenty of time to catch a flight over. Come on down, Greg!

Either that, or invite us all over for drinks at Casa de Erko.

Following greg's example I just skimmed a bunch of random IRLs, and wow, ours is by far the most fun. I am glad I live here.

On the other hand, I noticed mods actually deleted "off topic" comments in some of the other threads, so I think maybe our thread just got lucky and stayed under the radar.
posted by lollusc at 1:04 AM on November 11, 2015 [1 favorite]

Not that nachos are off topic. They are, in fact, very on topic.

I think it's the poutine that is calling my name, though. That or the jerk chicken.
posted by lollusc at 1:08 AM on November 11, 2015

I love that a) I'm not the only one who immediately looked up the menu and has been thinking about eating foodstuffs from it, regularly (NB, the jerk chicken does look nice. I'm considering "supplementing" my nachos with an order of buffalo wings, colitis and alcohol permitting).

b) that we can all unanimously agree that nachos are germane to every conversation.

c) that we got an unexpected visit from that scion of mefi - "the Fonz" of metafilter in my, and everyone's, hearts - Greg Nog, who not only literally metaphorically literally lives in Erskineville, wherever he lives, but has also collected a hearty new nickname with an unmistakably Australian aftertaste to it. It's only fitting, we love our Gregs in Australia, Greg.

Ok. We're doing Chaiday Night Dal at my place this Friday night for any mefite interested.

Memail me for the address in the inner west. Very close to two train stations.
All mefites welcome.
Here is the spiel:

Chaiday Night again this Friday!

Repeat of the same story- ie in the spirit of catching up with- people we love but seldom see, people we see but never for long enough, people we would like to get to know better and people who enjoy our company... "Chaiday Night Dal" is for you.

MrTaff and I invite you to the semi-regular, utterly informal, open house where you come if you like, bring something (or someone!!) to share if you like and stay as long as you like. Door opens at 18:00.

We chuck some food on the table in a house that's guaranteed to be cluttered and messy but welcoming.

The dal is made by MrTaff which makes it actually yummy.

See this as your personal invitation, daling. Really.
Only need to RSVP if you're a yes. Xx

#ChaidayNight

Minimum two mefites attending...but they're sneaky buggers. More may appear.
