Burns supper! Whiskey! Poetry! Haggis! (which is a kind of poem I think)
I've been wanting to go to one of these for years, and something always happens schedule-wise to keep me from going to the various events around town. So we're doing one of our own! We're having it at Greg's on Saturday, January 24th.

THERE WILL BE:
* haggis
* neeps and tatties
* scotch
* poetry

YOU SHOULD BRING:
* more scotch
* other alcohol
* small side dishes / desserts
* more poetry or short amusing anecdotes/stories

THE PROGRAM:
1: hanging out until everyone's arrived
2: bagpipe music
3: bring out the haggis
4: someone(s) (probably me!) recites Address to a Haggis
5: a toast to the haggis!
6: food comes out
7: everyone eats
8: poetry/stories start
9: someone talks about Robert Burns
10: more drinking and eating and talking, repeat until bedtime

Oh hmm! I do like scotch, and am amenable to reciting poetry in a bad Scots accent.

Christopher Walken doesn't count as a scots accent.

Does it have to be Burns' poetry? I can do a mean Ogden Nash...
posted by Greg_Ace at 12:58 PM on January 4, 2015

I think it's generally geared to Scottish poetry but I imagine as the night goes on, any sort would be fine. ;)

Maybe I could bring some scotch in lieu of a dish? Or maybe I'm just regretting missing this year's whisky tasting meetup.

So long as consumption of scotch and/or haggis is not obligatory, I may be able to make it.

First of all, I'll admit that I wasn't even aware that "Burns Supper" was a Thing, so this is all new to me. But I'm game nonetheless. I'm even willing to host, unless someone else wants to.

Do we have any pipers in our midst? Are pre-recorded pipings considered not to be a vile abomination?

Is anyone keen on making haggis? Can it be found pre-made locally?

Neeps and tatties, I assume?

Are other veggies allowed? (just thinking about all that fat and organ meat and root veggies has me craving something leafy and green)

...Or am I just overthinking a dram of whisky? So many questions...
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:58 PM on January 4, 2015

I can source the haggis. I figure bagpipe recordings will suffice. ;)

Just for that I'm going to eat, like, five haggis. Haggises. Haggii.

Haggae?

We'll have to consult a haggiographer.

In regards to the date, the 25th appears to be traditional, but perhaps the 24th is more prudent.

I will probably be out of town but I can offer up this recipe for Vegetarian Haggis with Neeps and Tatties. I've made it before and it was pretty tasty.

If it becomes a tradition, I'll be first to sign up for next year. I can't make that weekend at all for this year.

Well, if it doesn't happen this year, next year will be the inaugural meeting!

So, Greg's on the 24th?

OK.

Hooray! I wonder if I could manage cock-a-leekie soup. The CSA keeps giving us leeks.

I think that I shall never see

I have procured a 3-pound haggis. It's doesn't LOOK like a tonne of food, so maybe if a lot of people show up it will be more like a haggis tasting. Also I often underestimate food sizes so maybe it is actually a great deal of haggis.
posted by curious nu at 8:37 PM on January 13, 2015

a "tasting" might be fine. Though a little blue bird (who once lived in Scotland) has told me that haggis is pretty darn dense to begin with, so 3 pounds may well be the right amount.
posted by Greg_Ace at 10:26 PM on January 13, 2015

Having seen it (it's in the freezer), I think everyone (who includes meat in their diet) should at least try it; beyond that, some hearty side dishes are probably in order.
posted by mimo at 8:37 AM on January 14, 2015

wouldn't a dense three pounds be the same amount of food more or less as a less dense three pounds

also have you ever really looked at your hands

Consider a teaspoon of neutron star and 3 pounds of unbuttered air-popped popcorn. Which do you think would fill you up more before it killed you.

We should play Strange Culinary Death Quiz at more meetups.

Incidentally, "Neutron Haggis" is the name of my new band.

Our genre will be "heavy meatle".

My guest would like to claim the job of reciting the Address. Maybe we can split it up or something?
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:23 PM on January 17, 2015

We'll make Cranachan for a dessert.
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:26 PM on January 17, 2015

I have no attachment to the Address, so if she wants to take it, nae problemo. =D

Shoot, I wanted to see y'all duel with claymores over the right to recite it! THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE.

And now I wonder if that's the first time anyone has ever conflated the concepts of Robert Burns and the Highlander franchise

I think I found my poetry selection!

Looking at vespabelle's neeps and tatties recipe, no wonder it is tasty, it uses 2 and a half sticks of butter if I'm reading it correctly.
posted by mimo at 2:57 PM on January 19, 2015

Looks to me like some of that is for the "haggis"; the veggies only get 1 stick. Not that that's not still a fair amount of butter...

BTW, rutabagas ≠ turnips.
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:26 PM on January 19, 2015

I think our scotch offering will be Glenfiddich, since that's a nicely neutral selection. Unless Greg already has that and wants to share in which case I shall bring another, different thing.
posted by curious nu at 4:42 PM on January 22, 2015

I got Talisker 10, so we'll have choices.

A toast - to choice!
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:54 PM on January 22, 2015

I also grabbed a couple books of Burns poetry and a Scottish poetry compilation. I am pretty excited for haggis times!

Oh no, I love butter. In fact, I am also bringing some Walkers shortbread cookies (butter) and probably some cheese scones (butter).

I think we'll probably be there around 5 or 5:30. Don't hold up any eating or drinking for us tho. 😉

Since we did not memorialize it ourselves, here is a video of a true Scotsman addressing the haggis.

I seem to recall and address being recited...though granted, with an attempted rather than an authentic Scottish accent.
