Sun January 4 at 12:00 PM, Roll Play Café
10 Edward Street, Toronto, ON M5G 1C9, Canada (Map & Directions)
Hey, everybody, why not work off the turkey and nog sluggishness with a rousing afternoon of board games in Toronto?
Board game cafés spring up like mushrooms these days and I live out in the 905 (and thus probably do not know half of them), so I am open as to venue. Sunday December 28th... no, on second thought, let's make that January the 4th. The 4th suit people, maybe from noon onwards?

I would be into this but sadly am out of town until late in that evening.

I would love to go to this, but we're out of town for the holidays. Anytime the first week of January (except the 1st and the evening of the 3rd) would be great for me, but don't change it if you can get a quorum.

We are also out of town, until the 29th.

The 28th was the day I pulled out of the festive air. A week layer (Sunday January 4 would be equally fine by me. What say?

I could do Jan 4th!

I could probably come January 4th. This would be my first IRL Metafilter thing. Hi everybody!

I'm free the 4th.

The mob has spoken: the 4th it is. Venue?

I liked Roll Play where we did the meetup last summer, but if anyone has an alternate, speak up.

Is that the place at College/Spadina?
posted by feckless fecal fear mongering at 10:20 AM on December 9, 2014

(If not, there's a place at College/Spadina. Also Snakes & Lattes in the Annex but they're usually pretty full on Sundays I think)
posted by feckless fecal fear mongering at 10:22 AM on December 9, 2014

Roll Play is the one above the BMV on Edward, next to the ruins of the World's Biggest Bookstore. I believe The Castle is the one at College and Spadina and Snakes and Lattes is always too absurdly crowded to be in the running, I would say.
posted by ricochet biscuit at 10:46 AM on December 9, 2014

Castle is on the small side and I don't recall the layout being super amenable to big groups, but I could be misremembering as I've only been there once. I'm on the record as a big fan of Roll Play.
posted by Phire at 11:24 AM on December 9, 2014

I have been to the Castle maybe twice and yeah, it seems optimum for maybe four people socializing at a table. I think Roll Play served us well last time when there were a dozen or so present.

Dude, why must you bring that up?
posted by ricochet biscuit at 9:36 AM on December 10, 2014 [3 favorites]

There was no comma, so obviously fffm means you are going to play Monopoly correctly, as ricochet biscuit notes in the linked comments, is almost never done.

It sounds like the perfect opportunity. Please take photos so I can appreciate the joy of Monopoly from afar.

Hey, if I had my way* there would be no money on Free Parking, landed-on properties would be bought at once (either by the active player or by auction) and there would be a cost to unmortgage properties. And the game would take under an hour**.

*Well, me and Parker Brothers.

**Which it does.

Is this going to be a fun meetup or one where I re-experience all my childhood Monopoly trauma? I'm on the fence here, guys.
posted by maudlin at 2:48 PM on December 10, 2014 [1 favorite]

It's okay maudlin, while the masochists over there play Monopoly we can just engage in a round of something lighthearted and relaxing, like Diplomacy.

Yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaahhhhhhh! I'm so in.

And yeah, Roll Play would probably be better than Castle, in my experience. And Snakes will be packed.

Note to self: ACTUALLY bring Machine of Death.
posted by Lemurrhea at 1:10 PM on December 11, 2014

OH HEY can we have a resistance rematch? I only ask because flex keeps saying she can't trust me after the last time and I want to prove my honesty.

he's a lawyer. That's Latin for liar!

I could pooossssiblyyyyyy come up from Hamilton for this. Putting down as a Maybe until I know. Organizing folks, if you need a *firm* number for the venue, let me know and I'll cease wafflin' and make a definite.

I have made the booking as a dozen attendees right now so we have some wiggle room.

Yay, that was really fun! We cured those diseases (by the skin of our teeth, but we did it)! I now have to work on not having such a guilty face that everyone thinks I'm a spy even when I'm not.

Seven Wonders HURT MY BRAIN

I am proud that the Ephesians built nothing lasting, but turned into the thugs of the Mediterranean. And yes, good work on narrowly avoiding humanity being wiped out by the Blue Shakes.

Lemurrhea suggested a future game of History of the World: this game reposes four feet from where I sit right now, and I am happy to bring to on the road for a game in Toronto or to host people here, for those who wish to trek out to the 905.
