Oh, HELL yeah! It's been a crummy month.

YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO CLICK THE YES BUTTON FLEX. Sheesh.
posted by maudlin at 11:55 AM on September 19, 2014

I can't commit until we pick a date & time & place and all that stuff. Sheesh back at you!

FINE. October 4 at Jason George sounds perfect. Bet it will rain, though. /grumpycat

I'm in! And if it rains there will be no one there and therefore lots of room for metafilter.

In like Flynn!

(That's how the cool kids talk, right?)
posted by Phire at 2:01 PM on September 19, 2014

The earliest known use of "in like Flynn" in print is in the December 1946 issue of American Speech. Penn State prof Ed Miller reported that students of his who had served in the army air force during World War II used the expression to mean, "'Everything is OK.' In other words, the pilot is having no more trouble than Errol Flynn has in his cinematic feats."

From this we learn several things: (1) The expression was of recent origin. Had it been widely used in the 1930s Miller would not have included it in a list of World War II slang. (2) The term was generally understood to refer to Errol Flynn. (3) It didn't necessarily refer to Flynn's success with women. (4) Then again, maybe Miller's students just didn't feel like proclaiming otherwise in the middle of class.

Oh hai! I may have a wedding to attend that night but if not I am IN LIKE SIN. Whatever that means.
posted by miss_kitty_fantastico at 2:22 PM on September 19, 2014 [1 favorite]

Aw, I have a wedding to attend that evening also. If it happens to be switched to any other day that week, I will be there!

In like gin.

Oh, I just realized Nuit Blanche is the 4th and I already have plans for that. Can we do the 3rd or something instead? If not it's cool, I'll just sit this one out.
posted by Phire at 12:47 PM on September 20, 2014 [1 favorite]

I can probably do the 4th, and I haven't been to Jason George before, so count me in.
posted by TheWhiteSkull at 5:54 PM on September 20, 2014

Hmm, so that's two people who couldn't make Saturday the 4th but could do Friday the 3rd. I personally don't care - could people chime in if they can't do Friday but can do Saturday? I'll just go with whichever cuts out less people, obviously.
posted by Lemurrhea at 6:38 AM on September 21, 2014

Either night is fine with me.
posted by quaking fajita at 7:01 AM on September 21, 2014

Friday night is no good for me.
posted by Brockles at 8:58 AM on September 21, 2014

Either night is good for me, too.
posted by maudlin at 9:00 AM on September 21, 2014

Saturday is much easier than Friday for me b/c of the commute required.
posted by flex at 9:03 AM on September 21, 2014

I might not be able to make it on the 4th (too many people out on nuit blanche)
posted by grippycat at 10:06 AM on September 21, 2014

Friday nights always work better for me because that means I don't have to make an extra trip into the city on the weekend.
posted by sardonyx at 11:29 AM on September 21, 2014 [1 favorite]

I can do the 4th, but not the 3rd. We could also do a Nuit Blanche meet-up for the 4th? Or drinks/dinner with Nuit Blanche after? (I might bail early though, as I have been roped into doing something at 6am.)
posted by typewriter at 5:56 PM on September 21, 2014

I can't do the 3rd. I can maybe do the 4th.
posted by chunking express at 8:38 AM on September 22, 2014

I could maybe do either day, but Nuit Blanche is also a consideration for me.
posted by quiet earth at 2:08 PM on September 22, 2014

I would actually prefer the Friday as well, but I can still do the Saturday.
posted by TheWhiteSkull at 2:54 PM on September 22, 2014

All right so the numbers are pretty much even. With that, I'm sticking to my guns and saying that 7:00, Saturday, October 4th, at Jason George. Sorry if you can't make it - we'll just have to have another meetup soon!

I'll make the reservations next week, they'll be under "Aaron".
posted by Lemurrhea at 9:57 AM on September 23, 2014

Definitely maybe!
posted by tantrumthecat at 11:09 PM on September 23, 2014

I will be doing Nuit Blanche as well.

Is it bad that part of me wants to just carry through the drunken shenanigans of a MeFi meetup ALL THE WAY to Nuit Blanche?
posted by LoRichTimes at 5:30 PM on September 24, 2014 [3 favorites]

Nuit Blanche is all night. If you are checking it out at 7:00 PM you are doing it wrong!
posted by chunking express at 8:57 PM on September 24, 2014 [1 favorite]

I might need to run off to a concert but I'll come for 7!
posted by typewriter at 5:50 AM on September 25, 2014

Sorry, just realized the Saturday is already booked, so I'm out.
posted by sardonyx at 8:53 AM on September 27, 2014

ARGH! I can't believe this, but work has asploded (yes, weekends are sometimes pure fiction for freelancers) and I can't go now.

But I think we should have another meetup at the Jason George soon. I will drag grippycat there myself if I have to.
posted by maudlin at 9:40 AM on October 3, 2014

Ahh that sucks Maudlin! But yes, I will just treat it as an excuse to not wait until 2015 for our next meetup.

Reservation booked under 'Aaron'. See you all tomorrow!
posted by Lemurrhea at 1:48 PM on October 3, 2014

I only just noticed this meetup. I'll try to attend.

We're in the back, just walk on in!
posted by Lemurrhea at 4:10 PM on October 4, 2014

I'll probably wander down in half an hour, ish.
posted by feckless fecal fear mongering at 4:44 PM on October 4, 2014

The wife and I are not going to make it. I only got in from a 3 week trip late last night, so it was a step too far for me to start being all sociabubble. Sorry. Early night for me...
posted by Brockles at 5:24 PM on October 4, 2014

Thanks to everyone who came out, it was a great time! We will have to give in to our waitress' strong urges - and hold another meetup soon.

In other news, why in the world would I look up Slip & Slide on urban dictionary? Eye bleach time.

Such an excellent meetup! Missed everyone who couldn't make it but it was indeed a great time with those who did. Also that's a good location - easy to get to, not too crowded (I am perhaps biased from my traffic luck in getting there last night). Thanks for calling this one, Lemurrhea.
posted by flex at 8:06 AM on October 5, 2014

Hahaha, I promise the actual context was a lot more innocuous than urban dictionary might lead you believe (as, I imagine, is often the case), Lemurrhea. That said, the speculation is coming to be such an endless source of amusement, that the actuality is becoming rather moot :D

And yes, that was a great meetup! I think I'll aim to organize one for November, since there seems to be enthusiasm.

Aurrghhhh I am a total dummy and straight up forgot about this. I wish I had a cool story for why I didn't attend. But mostly I just sat at home watching old West Wing episodes and was like "hurr durr look at me be this human who definitely had no plans tonight hurr durr durr".

Sigh. Sounds like it was a fun night though, I'll have to catch you all next time around!
