Lunch on the 7th, Brooklyn?

Sun September 7 at 3:00 PM, Fourth avenue pub, Brooklyn.
76 4th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Hello, MetaFilter! I'll be popping by Brooklyn from the 6th to the 11th of this month, and I wonder if anyone would care for a quick lunch meet-up (let's say on Sunday the 7th) with me, Mrs quidnunc and the quidnunc baby (him name: quark). Somewhere nice in Williamsburg or thereabouts may be easiest, and a pub is always an option if drunch is better than lunch. Or an afternoon cocktail or tea party, or whatever. Or feel free to tell me where to go, either literally or figuratively.
At Fourth Avenue Pub, 76 Fourth Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11217, from 3 pm.

I'd be down!

I can be in W'burg at about 3:00 PM if we're set on having it there. Most other parts of Brooklyn discounting I can prob. be there earlier.

This is where I annoy you by asking for venue suggestions. It could be anywhere (if Billyburg is too tricksy). Beer garden would be nice as the weather's looking good. Pick your favourite!

A couple ideas: Dirck the Norseman is not a beer garden exactly but has beer hall stuff and some tables outside. They are the home of Greenpoint Beer and Ale* (though maybe they are technically located in Williamsburg? Unclear).

Heading farther south, Fourth Avenue Pub is a meetup favorite with a garden, located near Atlantic Ave/Barclay's; maybe some people are tired of it but I think it's pretty all right--good beer selection and free popcorn.

*OMG they have a beer named Ferret Legging!

I would very much prefer something in the downtown area to W'burg and thereabouts, and 4th Avenue Pub is great. Plus Mile End is right there.

4th avenue pub could work. What time is good - early afternoon?

I got the podcast until about 2 so I can't make it before 2:30 or so.

OK let's say 3pm but I expect a podcast shout-out. ;-)

Haha, that would be me. Since you have a "lunch" tag on here, I'll mention that they don't serve any food, which is what keeps me from liking the place that much. Nice bars (i.e., not dive bars) that don't serve food is just not as much of a thing in other places I've lived, so I find the concept annoying, as everyone knows. But don't mind my personal pet peeve, and we can go here if you want, quidnunc kid!

(unannihilated, it's possible I've been doing it wrong all my life and should move someplace where the fancy beer always comes with food! Sounds like paradise.)

Fourth Avenue Pub totally doesn't mind if we order in food, though, so there's that.

Wish I could make this. :(

Is 4th Avenue Pub child-friendly though? I feel like a no-food bar is probably not a good option for a meetup which includes the quidnunc baby. Dirck the Norseman seems intriguing.

Quark brings his own mush, but child friendly is best ...

Good point. I just checked the weather, and it's supposed to be cooler tomorrow, but still 81. Even if we left a bowl of water, that's still too hot to leave the baby tied up outside.

Fourth Avenue Pub totally doesn't mind if we order in food, though, so there's that.

Being able to sit down and order Belgian food with your Belgian beer or top of the line hotdogs with your craft brews and not having to worry about walking around the neighborhood or fumbling with Seamless on your phone for 20 minutes is a convenience I got mighty used to. I dare say, ferret branca, that this is one area where New York is doing it wrong. But the good thing is that this is New York, so we can rustle up other options that should fit the bill.

It's up to quidnunc. Also, 4th Avenue Pub is not near Williamsburg. Are you okay with that or would you rather we move it closer to wherever you are?

4th Ave is about as child-friendly as any bar, food or no, that I can think of, particularly if we can sit outside. Kids in bars is pretty much the opposite of my area of expertise though! As the one who suggested 4th Ave, I definitely don't mind switching venues if something else would work better, but I don't have any great ideas.

Also, Belgian food with my Belgian beer? What is that! Sounds like some Pennsylvania-style madness to me. (mmm, Monk's.)
posted by ferret branca at 12:05 PM on September 6, 2014

Hmm. It would be a bit of a stroll for us (with the stroller) but there's probably a stroll involved anyhow, and we could always just jump a cab, or get "Das Metrotubeway" (as I understand you call it).

It occurs to me that the recommendations of the excellent young rope-rider could be invaluable in this situation!
posted by the quidnunc kid at 12:56 PM on September 6, 2014

Haha, young rope-rider is actually the biggest fan of 4th Ave Pub! I think the issue is not really the lack of food but its distance from the neighborhood you originally specified. I mean, you're the guests and you've got a kid in tow, so I think we should travel to meet you rather than the other way around. Most of the beer hall type places are in Williamsburg/Green Point area anyway. (I'm just thinking about Belgian beer now, mmmm.)

Ah! OK. Let's assume 4th Avenue pub unless y'all have specific alternative (that works for you) in mind. We can just cab it.

Good luck lalex! It would be lovely to see you if draining permits, but no stress if it's not possible.

Looks like I'm not going to be able to make it across the rivers today after all, sorry!

I'm a bit late making this confirmed, which I'll do now ... Also I am wearing a t-shirt with a bear on it, and have a child in a stroller. You can't miss me, I think.

You know, despite having done my research for the primary elections this morning, I still managed to be surprised by one race on my ballot that I knew nothing about (a judgeship), so I actually did end up writing in and voting #1 quidnunc kid.

Thanks! That's also how Judge Judy got her start. I'm assuming it's the NY Supreme Court? I woulda preferred US Supreme Court, but, you know ... any port in a storm, I guess ... Anyway if you ever need a writ of Habeus Corpus or a quick divorce, I'm your guy.
