Sat August 2 at 2:30 PM, Central Park, Sheep's Meadow
Sheep Meadow, 65th Street Transverse, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
For her tenth birthday, my oldest daughter asked for a trip to New York City (we're from Louisiana.) No trip would be complete without a MetaFilter meetup. We're CONFIRMED!
Potluck-style picnic in Sheep's Meadow of Central Park on Saturday, August 2, 2014 around 2:30pm.

(Also, we've got a fairly full schedule for the rest of the week, but if you have an idea of something we must try or if you have some incredible hook-up for tourists, please MeMail me.)

Woohoo, I am in! A picnic in the park could be a lot of fun.

I am down for literally whatever.

I'm in! And I know Central Park is probably more of a "thing" for a first visit, but I can suggest an alternative - Governors' Island would be lovely and has a lot of things to do and see (mini golf! Art exhibits! Groves of hammocks! Funky food carts!)
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 3:04 AM on July 2, 2014

Oo, that could be fun, although it looks like there is a concert there at 4 pm that day, not sure if that makes the place too crazy?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 5:35 AM on July 2, 2014

Not at all - that's at the "beach club," which is actually a fairly small spot tucked away near the ferry from Manhattan. Most of the rest of everything is set away from that spot - GI is about 2 miles in circumference so that still leaves a TON of room to explore.

Ooh, I just found pictures of this years' minigolf course! It's an artists' collective that creates it each year.

Hmmm. That might be better for a "middle of the week" activity for us. She's pretty jazzed about seeing Central Park.

You, of course, know where to find me, and my store has tons of great kid's stuff. Plus there's a great Candy and Sno-Cone stand near by. They sometimes have beer flavored jelly beans.

So, a picnic seems to be going nowhere. How about a DIM SUM dinner Saturday night?
posted by ColdChef at 7:07 AM on July 16, 2014

I LIKE THE PICNIC IDEA (keep Dim Sum as rain/heat check). The Sheep's Meadow is the most iconic of the picnicy areas so that's probobly the best (I mean the best place to picnic I think is is in the way north part in the hilltop children's garden but it kind of looks like every park everywhere) It's gonna be hoooooot around noon but brunch-y like 2:30 would be nice. Pot-luck style? Everyone brings a thing?
posted by The Whelk at 10:47 AM on July 16, 2014 [1 favorite]

Fair enough! Let's say everyone brings a thing, 2:30ish in the Sheep's Meadow. I'll MeMail my phone number to anyone who wants to keep in touch.

PLUS, you can hit all the Central Park landmarks beforehand and then sit down have a nice lunch.

If anyone has a beach or lawn umbrella I encourage brining it.

Mannn I totally want to come but I may or may not be out of town.

Now that this is on ON THE HORIZON do we want to do any preliminary planning? Sheep's Meadow is kind of big so ...blankets? A sign? A big sparkly pinwheel planted in the ground?

See this is why we need a flag!
posted by SpaceWarp13 at 8:06 PM on July 27, 2014

Exactly.

I got nothing to do this week so I nominate myself to be point on organization such as it is and making us well-stocked and easy to find.

(also I live close enough to like, run home for things so)

I think I'm gonna bake cookies- these are catching my eye.

Interesting question - there is a free concert by Dr. John in Central Park at 3. Would we be close enough to hear it? Should we endeavor to get close enough to hear it (without being in the middle of the throng)?
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 6:12 PM on July 28, 2014

In past meetups at Sheep's Meadow, we tend to stick toward the northwest side under some of the trees. I like shade! And I hate to be that person, but I'm seeing a chance of rain on Saturday, do we have a rain plan?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 6:27 AM on July 29, 2014

I think the Northwest corner is best too and it's within walking distance of Summerstage for the interested - Wunderground has a chance of thunderstorms on Saturday - we should keep an eye on it but Sunday has 20% as of right now.
posted by The Whelk at 10:48 AM on July 29, 2014

Sounds like it'd also be in earshot of Summerstage, then (dig the music, not too keen on the crowds).

I may bring pie.
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 11:09 AM on July 29, 2014

I don' t have any suggestions for a rain plan, but I think it is an excellent idea that we develop one, TPS. I will try to think of a suggestion.

As to refreshments, computech & I are planning on bringing a cooler packed with soda, water, maybe gatorade/juice and beer.

I know what the rules are for the Park but I have also heard if you are discreet (e.g., drink out of non-transparent cups, keep all empties in a black garbage bag) you should be ok.

However, I don't drink and have never been to a picnic in the park with alcohol. Can someone with relevant experience weigh in?

I saw the travelers yesterday, they are in good spirits! Looking forward to Saturday. They fly out on Sunday, so any rain plans would have to be for Saturday.

Sorry to miss this as I'll be traveling but I can weigh in on this:

Basically as long as you're not a drunk idiot drawing attention to yourself, you're fine. The Conservancy staff aren't going to come and test your drink unless you give them reason. Plastic cups are your friend, don't drink from obvious alcoholic containers and stay quiet. You'll be fine.

Yeah I'm planning on bringing some of those canned champagne things. Just don;t be luridly a jerk about it and you're fine. No one pesters the guys sipping wine at summerstage shows.

WUnderground is showing 50% chance of "scattered showers" for Saturday - Dim Sum was mentioned above is that still available if we get rained out?
posted by The Whelk at 7:53 AM on July 30, 2014

Camping was cancelled for rain! I'm in!
posted by showbiz_liz at 9:47 AM on July 30, 2014

We are having such a great week so far that we're using the power of positive thinking to drive away the rain. We, therefore have no alternative plans. We will probably regret this. Check this space Saturday if we are forced to scramble for other plans.
posted by ColdChef at 9:18 PM on July 30, 2014

May I suggest that since the Museum of Natural History has "pay what you want" entry, that our rain plan be everybody pays $1 to get into the museum and congregates by the ammonite fossil in the Grand Gallery (the room with the long boat, clearly marked with a boat on the AMNH map)?
posted by ocherdraco at 10:00 PM on July 30, 2014 [1 favorite]

A museum works well for us! Hoping to bring our wild & crazy toddler, he'd love to room to run.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 7:21 AM on July 31, 2014

That also works for me!

Ooh, a museum would actually be awesome.
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 9:11 AM on July 31, 2014

Well, the way the forecast is shaping up, it looks like we will be indoors.
posted by computech_apolloniajames at 6:11 PM on July 31, 2014

Yeah the rain plan is looking increasingly likely, we should switch over to that.
posted by The Whelk at 8:46 AM on August 1, 2014

For those who have not done the pay-what-you-want thing at AMNH before: when you're at the ticket counter, all you need to do is say the number of people and how much you're paying: "I would like two adult tickets for one dollar each, please." (Or however much you'd like to pay.) The cashier will not bat an eye.
posted by ocherdraco at 11:30 AM on August 1, 2014

Ok! We will be in the museum at 2:30 tomorrow in the Grand Gallery.
posted by ColdChef at 4:10 PM on August 1, 2014

Dumb question - the Grand Gallery is the main hall with the dinosaur, yes? Or the one with all the teddy Roosevelt dioramas?

Wait, answered my own question - it's the one with the canoe.

posted by The Whelk at 11:02 AM on August 2, 2014

Something came up and turns out I wouldn't be able to make it until much later. What's the game plan? Are you guys just hanging out at the museum for a few hours or are you going for dinner or anything afterward?
posted by unannihilated at 11:07 AM on August 2, 2014

Line to get into the museum is super crazy long. We're out front under the statue of Roosevelt.
posted by ColdChef at 11:19 AM on August 2, 2014

Argh. Subway is taking too long and I'm no longer going to have time to go to the museum and back before my best friend's bachelorette party starts this afternoon.

Grar. Have fun, guys. I'm sorry I can't be there.
