I would love to join you for a Portland meet-up, especially if we can make it walking distance from downtown. Last time The Whelk was here, we met a Novare Res in the Old Port, where they have a nice big deck with big tables, an extensive beer menu, and a small menu of food. We could meet there again or head somewhere else.

Portland is littered with bars and other places to meet, especially downtown, the Old Port, and the East and West End. Out-of-towners might find the Portland Food Map useful; bars are grouped together in the "drinks" category on the lower left; not entirely intuitively, pubs are on the upper right, grouped in with BBQ joints, food trucks, and diners. If you click on any of the categories in the right-hand sidebar, it take you to a geographic view, too.

The Whelk and Mr. The Whelk, what kind of bar/cuisine might pique your interest? I'll be happy to make suggestions if you like.

I'm be fine with Novare Res but is there a similar place with a larger food menu?

I don't do much pubbing, but if that's the aspect of Novare Res that appeals, we can ask around. Local folks, has anyone tried The Little Tap House? They have a more extensive menu and a happy hour from 4-7 M-F, which seems like it might do nicely. (I also love the prospect of a meet-up in my neighborhood, I have to admit. That would simplify life immensely.)

In the Old Port, there's The Thirsty Pig, which I've heard good things about from friends. It's small inside, I hear, but they have a deck, a menu of various artisanal sausages (including a vegan option, one friend mentioned, but you might double-check to be sure that's still available), and beer beer beer.

Where else is a good candidate for a meet-up, locals?

Oh, there's also Local 188 on Congress St. The Whelk, you probably walked right past the place when you visited last; it's a few blocks down from The Green Hand bookstore. They have a dining area but also a sizable bar, and I thiiiiink they open a patio in back in good weather — or is that just a few tables out front, local folks?

They have tapas or full meals, a full bar, a lovely selection of beer and wines by the glass, and often have a mocktail special, too, for those who prefer to stay teetotal. I think Local 188 would make for a swell meet-up spot!

Local 188 looks GREAT, I vote that.

But now When?
posted by The Whelk at 7:26 PM on June 27, 2014

Local 188 it is!

Is there a day you'd like to make the trip to Portland? Or maybe some other attendees will wend their way here to chime in on days/times that are good for them. Unless I get an unexpected assignment or family obligation, I can probably arrange to be free on a given weekday afternoon/evening that works for a larger group.

Us too! Our only blackout day is this upcoming Monday, everything else is negotiable.

I won't be back in Maine until July 5, but can attend any day after that (including the 5th, actually, if it is late enough in the day).

I have commitments on the 4th and 5th. Sunday the 6th? Local 188 has brunch til 2, takes reservations. Or late afternoon. I like drinking on late Sunday afternoons.

Huh according to Open Tabke there are no free tables at Local 188 until 5:30, does a later start work for peoe!

Not sure what our plans for the 4th weekend are yet but I think the earliest I would be back from upstate is the 6th, so maybe that date?

The last Mefi meetup in Portland was at Salvage which is a nice informal BBQ place with lots of room, but Local 188 is run by the same people so should be similar. I had a terrible experience there about 7 years ago but I'm sure it's better now.

I like the 6th for the date too.

Yelling at the open table site isn't working so I'm calling it for SALVAGE on the 6th at 2PM

Weekends are harder for me than weekdays; I'll try to make it. If I don't, have a great time!

Oh hooray! I'm in. We had a great time at salvage last meetup, so it's an excellent choice

Hey, I think I can do this! I have no idea how to recognize the rest of you, though.

If I don't head out of town this weekend I should be able to swing by. Definitely a tasty venue.

Anyone interested in doing something on the 12th? We're out of town for the 4th-6th (so you all should obviously adjust your lives).

The 12th would work me just as well as the 6th. Clearly I have limited social obligations.

bile & syntax, just ask around for 'friends of Matt'
posted by theora55 at 7:51 AM on July 3, 2014

Ok, it sounds like I am going to be coming back from upstate on Saturday so I should be able to make this. Donnagirl brought a Metafilter t-shirt as a flag last time if I'm remembering that correctly?

Salvage is kind of big but it's all one room and you can see everything from the door.

Yerfatma sorry you can't make this date, if something additional gets organized for the 12th I might be able to make that as well.

bile and syntax, my photo is in my profile (though A. I have slightly longer hair and won't be wearing glasses; B. my photo only helps if I can make it to the meet-up on Sunday). The Whelk pretty regularly posts his photo on Twitter, which should also help you spot the MeFi table.

I'm also pretty good at flagging down confused looking people.

Also, if I end up attending, I'll pop into this thread to give you a self-description, including what colors I'm wearing.

Cool, then my plan will be to show up, look confused, and ask for friends of Matt. I am a small white woman with brown hair (so distinctive in Maine, I know) and a purse that looks like I decapitated a muppet.

I've never done one of these before, but I'm in.
posted by OntologicalPuppy at 7:33 PM on July 5, 2014

I don't think I'll make it, dammit. I didn't get home last night from Florida until very late, and I don't think I'm up to the drive.
posted by JanetLand at 7:57 AM on July 6, 2014

I'm also out, sorry. Unexpected family issues. Have fun!
