Midwinter Nordic-inspired Brunch Lunch

Sat December 21 at 11:00 AM, Chateau du Aubergine (aka Becky's house)
4924 Northeast 18th Avenue, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
I'm having a midwinter party and Mefites are invited!
Are you tired of holiday shopping? Tired of the Dark? Tired of Winter? Tired of Rain?

Then please come to my house for Nordic-inspired brunch/lunch to celebrate the return of the sun and to beat those mid-winter blahs!

There will be a smorgasbord/smorrbrod/buffet: DIY Danish open-faced sandwiches, herring, Swedish meatballs, Finnish root veggie casseroles, Scandinavian pastries/baked treats, aquavit, coffee and more (really, more? that seems like quite the list already?)

Board games, music (Norwegian dancehall? yes. Finnish polka? yes!) and of course sauna.

Hyvaa Talvipivnseisaus! (that should be Good Winter Solstice in Finnish but it appears metafilter strips out some of the characters!)

Argh! I have to be on the other side of town at noon! Boo!

[Sorry about the Finnish. Is it Hyvä Talvipäivänseisaus? MetaFilter doesn't normally strip out any characters.]

I'm interested, as long as nobody forces me to drink aquavit. Or eat lutefisk.

note to self: put lutefish on shopping list.

I guess to make up in partial for missing this, I will have to get my Scandinavian fix at the Scan Fair this weekend.

I'm really sorry about that one time, Greg.

I will be there with Ole and Lena jokes.

No worries, we can heal all wounds with a bit of Swedish vodka!

I will be there with Mister Rabbit and Kid Rabbit.

I get the impression that everything will pretty much be there already. Should we/can we bring anything? I feel guilty just showing up empty-handed...

Any additions are welcome but not necessary. This is my one party of the year and I enjoy providing a good spread! including The Portland's largest rutabaga!

Bring something to drink if you don't want to drink delicious aquavit! We will also have lingonberry soda and elderflower soda (and plain soda water you can add herring juice to as well.)

Bring a towel if you want to sauna.

Parking will likely be a bit of a pain (as I am right off Alberta St.) and you'll maybe have to park down the block.

Hi folks. I'm Portland-raised, DC-based and my conservative Finnish grandfather would appreciate this spread but probably not the overwhelming political consensus. Looking forward to meeting y'all tomorrow.

Looking forward to it (and also to whatever Portland's Largest Rutabaga is turning into)! I have some leftover ginger shortbread cookie dough I'm going to bake up and bring, because I couldn't possibly eat a whole batch of cookies at this point in the holidays, but I bet everyone could eat one or two and help me get rid of them.

Skwirl, I think this get together is also going to have some of vespabelle's non-metafilter friends attending, so please don't be put off if it takes you a little while to figure out which ones we are/takes us a while to figure out that you're from metafilter!

Ha. Thanks. That's why I thought I should chime in. I actually attended a couple PDX MeFi meet-ups back in the days before Mathowie and the gang moved here.

Sorry I missed it, I've been under the weather today. Bleah.

That was really fun! Thank you for inviting us.

I mentioned a couple of mud/adobe house things at the meetup- thought I'd drop links about them here.

The adobe/straw house I spent a couple of days helping build (here's someone else's account of helping to build) turns out to be called the Hummingbird B&B. The artists who built it are Dennis and Leslie, but they've recently sold it. I think it's a B&B now.

And, here's the airbnb in St. Johns called The Mud Hut.
