Dandies and Dinner

Sat August 17 at 2:00 PM, RISD Museum
224 Benefit Street, Providence, RI, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's go see the Artist / Rebel / Dandy: Men of Fashion exhibit at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum! We will meet at the Benefit Street entrance of the museum at 2:00 PM, and then make our way to Trinity Brew House at 5:00 PM for dinner.
The exhibit has been well-reviewed (Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal) and includes, among other artifacts, shirts that belonged to Oscar Wilde and Mark Twain.

I think I will be up for this. The Fez would make a good dinner place, although there's also the Trinity Brewpub and a bunch of other spots a short walk away. Were you looking for cheap, good, dandified, what?

I'd love to see this! My schedule is wonky, though. Whenabouts were you thinking?

Oh I wish! Providence is lovely!

Great idea! Some convincing of third parties and then arrangements will need to be made before I commit but it's an exciting possibility (& count the Fez as seconded).

I've been dying to see this show- people say it's great. Wil try to join.

It's pretty much got to be Saturday, August 17 for us, as our weekends are spoken for before then, and the exhibit ends on the 18th. Timewise we figured noon; the museum closes at 5:00, so that should be a decent amount of time to browse the exhibit (and the rest of the musuem? I've never been so I don't know how large it is) before retiring someplace for refreshment.

This may be the one possible weekend day that I have free (I fly to Nebraska the next day) and I will try to make this.

Looking at the Fez' Facebook page, I'm game! (Is it possible for a group to carry on a conversation without shouting at the tops of their lungs?)

I might be up for this... I will know closer to the date. It does look like a great show!

Oooo, the Fez looks lovely. They might even have poutine. Good call!

The Fez doesn't open until 5, however.

We should decide whether we will meet at the Main Street entrance, near the gift shop or the Benefit Street entrance. Either one is fine, both equally far from likely parking. I am slightly partial to the Benefit Street entrance, because it's nicer looking, but there's no significant difference.

Definitely going. If anyone needs a ride from the MA side, hit me up.

I would be happy to give you a ride. My MeMail is off when I'm not working but drop me a note at my regular email address and we can coordinate.

Me and Lipstick Thespian are officially in and looking forward to it.

We could do Trinity if it ends up being before the Fez's hours.

Ok, let's plan on meeting at the Benefit Street entrance of the museum at noon.

As for where and when to go after the museum... shall we do this high school field trip style and say, "OK, you're on you're own, be at The Red Fez at 5:00!"? Or should the decision to retire from the museum be made organically as a group? I'd hate for half of the group to feel rushed in the museum, with the other half bored silly waiting. A fixed time for dinner would also let us make a reservation and provide a target for any folks who can't join us earlier in the day.

But I'm probably way over-thinking this.

Target dinner sounds like a fine plan. We all have ways of amusing ourselves if we're speed racer museumites (I have been known to fit this description).

I like that idea. People do have different museum paces. If we start together, and then have a reconvene time at the dinner place, that should make everybody happy. Well, at least happy about that.

Plus I bet the Dandies exhibit won't take 5 hours to see. Is there anything else nearby that's good for whiling time away?
posted by Miko at 2:13 PM on August 8, 2013

Yeah if Fez is pushing this later, we could also start later. I am fine noodling for a few hours in-between but also fine showing up later.
posted by jessamyn at 2:35 PM on August 8, 2013

Not a bad idea, would also make travel time easier for us (she said selfishly). And, since people might be hankering for lunch at noon, That way they could eat lunch before showing up and get that out of the way so it doesn't mess with our meetup logistics.

Looks like we are heading towards 9-12 people. The Fez can fit that many people, but not at one table. They also do not take reservations, but it's pretty easy to grab the big tables at 5 when they open. 7 is another matter. Trinity Brewpub may be a better choice now.

There are some ok bars/coffee shops near the museum -- say within a 10 minute walk. I'll try to put together a list probably early next week.

Looks like we are off the maybe list and not going to be able to make it. Have fun!

One thing I'd also like to do while there is check out RISDWorks, the store with student and faculty design & artwork.
posted by Miko at 9:51 AM on August 10, 2013 [1 favorite]

I would definitely like to check out RISDWorks as well. I haven't been to RISD since I took a prospective student tour in high school, but my recollection is that the campus is pretty compact.

And agreed that five hours may be excessive for the museum; would 2:00 PM make more sense for the "official" initial meetup, with a 5:00 PM reservation at Trinity? (Thanks for the restaurant intelligence, GenjiAndProust!)

Glad it's coming together. I'd love to come. Maybe even get nutty, hire a sitter, and bring the spouse...

2 PM totally works, especially for them of us what is coming from a distance.
posted by Miko at 2:25 PM on August 12, 2013

2 pm is THE BEST. For me, anyhow.

Event details updated & reservation made at Trinity! (Under the name 'Chase', in case any of you wind up there before me.)

OK, coffee shops:

Cafe Choklad (2 Thomas St -- 2 blocks north on Main)
Cable Car (204 South Main Street -- about 4 blocks south on Main)

Both are on the same side of the street, so that's nice

Bars:

Hemenway's (121 S Main S -- 2 blocks south across Main. Really a fancy seafood place, but their bar is OK)

Trinity Brewhouse (186 Fountain St -- it's about a 15 minute walk, people may or may not decide to drive after the museum. Honestly, unless you are really bored with the show, it would make sense to walk over and do the drinking there)

Here's a Google Maps link for the path between the museum and dinner for those who like such things.

In addition to RISDWorks, there's the usual campus bookstore (heavy on the art supplies!) and a sculpture supply/hardware store: RISD: Our Stores

Is there still time to join? I just moved here this month and just saw this meetup was a few blocks from my place. I've never been to a metafilter meetup before but I pushed the "Joining Us - Yes" button so hopefully I'll see you all later today.

Woo hoo! Can't wait to see what kinda t-shirts Twain and Wilde wore.

I think Twain's was "Cool Story Bro."

Looking forward to welcoming you to the neighborhood, Seattlejeff! Come on down.

Hey, seattlejeff, hope to see you this afternoon! I think the attending/not attending/maybe feature is mostly to get a ballpark sense of who's coming for the purpose of reservations. I made the dinner reservation for 15 to accommodate any stragglers, so no worries there.

Is there still time to join?

Absolutely. And if there happen to be people who are going to miss the museum but can join us for dinner, that's cool too. Thanks much for the map usonian.

It was swell! If you all hadn't shown up, I would have had to eat that mud pie by myself. And that would not have been dandified.

Such a good time! If anyone is around on Labor Day weekend at basically any time, I'll be around and hosting people at my place. Big events: cake after Sunday dinner, hot dogs on Monday. Anyone who wants to come, address is 1655 Main Road in Westport. Email me (not MeMail) if you'd like more details.

Thanks all for a great meetup! Museum meetups are a fine idea. Lovely to meet/see everyone and enjoy a summer afternoon.

A very pleasant way to spend a late summer day! It was good to meet/see so many folks in person - sorry I never made it down to talk with you all at the other end of the table! I need to get better at that.
