Crap, that means my dad's birthday is in 6 days and I still don't have any idea what to get him. Crap.

What do you get for a guy who has asked for "plain white towels" and "a new garbage can" for the last two christmases?

I'm giving blood that morning. Which is usually traumatic. Typically, it's too many sticks before the blood starts flowing and then the blood stops flowing before the bag is full. But I'm a trouper. Or something.

At any rate. I am giving blood that morning. So maybe I'll be around for a cheap drunk later. Maybe not. I'll have to play it by ear.

phunniemee: buy him new undershirts.

Quality socks are a dad's best friend. Or new undershirts. The key is quality, because dad's tend to cheap out. It is a daily blessing to have every day items be of superior quality.

This is the smartest thing I have heard all day --> It is a daily blessing to have every day items be of superior quality.

and i just got out of a meeting with a lot of smart people saying perceptive things

Something he would enjoy but never buy or even ask for. Typically, for a dad, a slightly extravagant tool or item. Like a high end fancy pocket knife with an engraved message or a high quality wallet or really good slippers. I tend to either go for either the completely useless or used every single day for gifts.

really good slippers

hahahahahahahahhahahaha
hahahaha
hahahahahahhaahhahahahahahahaa
(breathe, breathe)
hahahahahaha!

No, seriously, trying to picture my dad wearing slippers is just...adorable. Awww.

There's a pile of very nice slippers in his closet, all still in the original packaging, from years of family members thinking, "gee, everyone likes a good pair of slippers!"

Also, that totally wasn't meant to be lolz srboisvert is stupid. My dad is just really, really difficult. I'm going to burn him a cd with some music I think he'll like and make him a card and attempt to figure out something legit for Father's Day.

All he does these days is ride is absurdly expensive bike. He has forgone all other hobbies and even washing the cars (which used to be his go-to activity) in order to spend time with his precious bike. Problem is, he is extremely particular about his bike stuff.

Then get him the worst possible bicycle bell you can find.

What size? I could use new slippers.

I actually once back in the good old freewheeling napster days made my parents a complete set of all the top 40 music from their teens and early twenties. They loved it.

He might like a Park Tool bike maintenance class -- they do them at Kozy's and several other places.

Ah - arriving in Chicago on the 2nd, alas.

rosf, This is the second time in as many years that you're in Chicago just wrong to hit the monthly meetup. Do we need to have a talk about proper trip planning and co-ordination for ensuring accumulation of both Goat and Frog experience points?

(alternatively, do you maybe wanna call a meet-up, for when you're in town?)

My word, CT - your memory is better than mine, but you're absolutely right. In this case, I am flying into O'Hare late on the 2nd, there for the 3-5th, if anyone fancies a pint, but it might be a bit too close. I will try to plan better next time!

Happy Flunk Day everyone. If I can get out of my afternoon meetings, I might be a little drunk before you see me. If not, then I guess we can start celebrating together.

Also, happy phunniemee's dad's birthday.

REMINDER: SUMMER HOURS IN EFFECT

If you hit the Goat after seven and no one's there, it's a safe bet we're at a patio within a one block radius. Always check the thread for locale changes.

Cheesies are LIARS. Their Yelp entry said open 'til five and I called and they said they were serving until four but when we showed up: nope. 2am license.

So we went to Berlin.
