My Perambulations Bring Me Back to MPLS/SPL

Thu May 30 at 7:00 PM, Common Roots
2558 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN, USA (Map & Directions)
Let us try and finalize this meetup. I am suggesting Thursday, 30 May and Common Roots on Lyndale and 26th. I realize we have a Wednesday/Thursday split, but Thursday ended up looking best for me. Any further thoughts?

Maybe Common Roots?

My husband and I had an early dinner and a few beers at Republic in Calhoun Square recently and it was really nice. Not sure if they had too much for vegetarians, but they had plenty of beer.

Just hit up Pourhouse in downtown mpls last week and absolutely loved it. Habenero curds and a black bean burger :)

I will probably be able to attend. I don't care where we go but how do people feel about Indian? Lots of veggie options and I'm still trying to find a decent Indian place in Mpls. We don't have to do this - just thought I'd throw it out there. I'm fine with anything.

Does anyone have a preference for a Wednesday or Thursday night?
posted by GenjiandProust at 12:31 PM on March 31, 2013

Republic is pretty good for vegetarians, I think, and the uptown one has a lot of room!

Not really sure about Indian places in Minneapolis (Bombay Bistro? I've been there for lunch only, and I wouldn't do it with a group...).

I'd prefer a Wednesday, if only because I have a standing appointment on Thursdays.

Common Roots has a back room that is free to non-profits and community groups. I have no idea whether we could plausibly call ourselves a community group. Otherwise, I'd worry that it's too crowded. Though at the end of May the patio will be open, which should help things a bit.

I too vote Wednesday. (dinty_moore and I definitely don't know each other. Not at all.)

The best Indian I've found in Minneapolis is Gandhi Mahal (technically Bangladeshi, but the menu is very similar). I've been meaning to try Himalaya, but it is really a hole in the wall and probably not appropriate for a group.

There are a number of really excellent Indian places in the far out suburbs (India Spice House, Paradise Biryani, Dosa King) but those are a 45-minute drive if you live in the city.

Either night is fine with me!

(Thanks for the suggestions miyabo. Even if we don't get Indian with this meetup, I now have a list of places to try in my ongoing quest).
posted by triggerfinger at 6:24 PM on April 1, 2013

Another vote for Wednesday. miyabo/triggerfinger, have you tried Namaste?
posted by clavicle at 8:36 AM on April 2, 2013

I can make either day, but I vote for Thursday. I have to be at work at midnight on Wednesday, thus limiting my ability to fully partake of the festivities.
posted by louche mustachio at 12:40 AM on April 3, 2013

clavicle - yes! I forget about Namaste because I only had an appetizer the one time I was there. It was very good. I need to go back and try a full meal.

I'd love to go, but this is probably going to be my busiest week of the year at work. Wednesday night out would be a real stretch.

Anyone been to the Birchwood Café? Yum. Admittedly, slightly small, and not open terribly late, but could be a start location with drinks to follow elsewhere.
posted by clever sheep at 9:02 AM on April 7, 2013

I intend to go to the Birchwood while I'm in the area, but it's hard to get a table for 6 there, and we had 12 or so last year....

It's looking like more people can attend on Wednesday than Thursday....

Either night is also good for me.

Wednesday's best for me. I'm a fan of Common Roots, but Birchwood Cafe looks nice too.
posted by finnegans at 5:27 AM on April 18, 2013

Can I just confirm that it looks like it might be the Wednesday? I know it's still a ways out and normally my schedule is pretty much wide open, but that specific week I have a few things that have come up so I am trying to do my planning ahead.

Just to be clear, I finally picked Thursday.
posted by GenjiandProust at 4:06 AM on May 3, 2013

So, funny coincidence! The standing appointment that Hoyland, Clavicle, Cabingirl and I have is... at Common Roots on Thursdays. This may turn into us bringing around the non-metafilter people in our knitting group to the meetup, or having all of you crash our knitting group.

I will say that it gets pretty crowded, so maybe reserve the back room.
posted by dinty_moore at 5:59 PM on May 3, 2013

Just checked. The back room at Common Roots is booked up on the 30th, so unless that was one of you, that idea is a bust. So hopefully the patio will alleviate some of the crowding. (It really varies how crowded Common Roots is on Thursday nights. Sometimes it's back and other times there's no one there.)

YAY THURSDAY
posted by louche mustachio at 11:17 PM on May 5, 2013

There's a knitting group? Why wasn't I informed?

I will do my best to join you guys. We can always move over to the CC Club if it gets too crowded at Common Roots or if things degenerate to the point that the CC just plain makes more sense :)

Now you have, padraigin! Pretty sure we would be happy to assimilate another mefite.

Does anyone want to suggest a different venue? We have a couple of weeks....
posted by GenjiandProust at 5:00 PM on May 8, 2013

I'm torn between seeing if the combined knitting group/mefite meetup would work and pointing out that a reservation at republic would work much better.

Padraigin- 6:30ish every Thursday at common roots, Sundays around 10ish at Jacksons (except for this Sunday). It's not a metafilter knitting group, just a knitting group that has attracted a surprising number of mefites.

I want to come knit soon, my life is a little bonkers right now and I have so many things on the needles that I really could use a kick in the ass.

But in general I want to love up on my Mefites so I'm excited about another meetup anyway. And this next one is coming up on a nice open time for me.
posted by padraigin at 8:40 PM on May 9, 2013

I'd be happy with trying to meet up at Common Roots, but I agree that it's pretty hit-or-miss when it comes to how busy it will be. I'm a little biased because I really like that place - really good food and beer and atmosphere, plus it's close to home.

I've never been to Republic, so I'd be okay with that too if people feel reservations are necessary.

Sorry guys, I won't be able to make this one - off to a wedding. But quick reading through this, check out "Wok in the Park" if you're still looking for a place. It's close to the St. Louis Park/Minneapolis border near Lake Calhoun. It might be BYOB, I can't remember but it is pretty close to Four Furkins (amazing beer store btw) if you need to make a run.

OK, I think the plan will be to show up a bit early and try to grab a table(s) with enough seating for the expected people. It would be helpful to move yourself into the "yes" category before Wednesday, so we have a reasonable count.
posted by GenjiandProust at 5:11 PM on May 22, 2013

I can't make it, now that it's Thursday. Ah well! But I would love to join the Mefi Mpls Knitters -- folks, maybe another scheduled meetup? Really, I would buy the first round just to have someone to encourage me to finish my first sweater after an endless series of scarves!
posted by clever sheep at 5:59 PM on May 22, 2013

Well, shoot. I have classes Tuesday and Thursday nights until July, or I would have tried to come to this one. Have fun!
posted by schnee at 8:02 PM on May 25, 2013

I would love to meet you folks and also to finish a sweater I started eons ago. I can't do tomorrow night but I've been keeping an eye on this thread.
posted by loveyallaround at 4:40 AM on May 29, 2013

Please count me in the "YES" category. It's still happening at Common Roots, correct? Look forward to meeting everyone in person!

...aaaand this is the week I'm out of town. Have fun kids! Maybe next time?

Still Common Roots yes.

And also yes, let's do a dedicated knitting meetup someday! The critical knitting mass in this thread pleases me.
posted by clavicle at 9:07 AM on May 30, 2013

I might be a little late: I was dumb and biked to work, even though the evening forecast is pretty dire, so I'm going to bike home first.
posted by dinty_moore at 9:45 AM on May 30, 2013

Oh wait. I lied. Think I'm the first one here? Sitting nearish to the back where there are a lot of empty tables. Gray sweater, not the guy from concordia.
posted by dinty_moore at 3:49 PM on May 30, 2013

... And then I realized this started a half hour after the usual time I get here, not before. Definitely the first one here. Whatever, my pretzels will be awesome.
posted by dinty_moore at 3:51 PM on May 30, 2013

Uh-oh, you probably *are* the first one there! (I was planning on 7:00)
posted by antonymous at 3:53 PM on May 30, 2013

It's cool, pretzels are keeping me company and the concurrent knitting group starts soon.
posted by dinty_moore at 4:00 PM on May 30, 2013

Uh oh. I arrived late, don't know anyone, and the back room is empty. Will attempt to remain calm, but I just realized that mefites don't look different than normal people. Is anyone else here? FYI, I'm in jeans and a white shirt and currently drinking a Finnegans.
posted by finnegans at 4:08 PM on May 30, 2013

I'll be wearing a purple shirt and black pants, and my messenger bag is black and purple as well. Planning to get there soon after 7.
posted by jiawen at 4:15 PM on May 30, 2013

Um, make that arrived early. Totally got connected. Mefites are exceptional, after all. :-)

My google searches from this meetup:

copronymus
ewan mcgregor pigeon
dolphin assisted birth metafilter (which leads to a post about koi assisted births)
Jean Claude Van Damme
Alfred the Great writing court man

Obviously, it was a pretty good night.
