Wed March 6 at 5:00 PM, Billy Goat Tavern
430 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
OMG! It's my first goat/frog IRL post!
Per usual: meet at the Billy Goat whenever you get off work (I'll be there by 5.) Drink tiny beers, enjoy friendship and fun.

Those of hardier stock will traverse to the Blue Frog, 676 N. LaSalle St., for more beers and karaoke and more fun.

It will be an early night for me because I will be out late being all culturally aware and shit at the opera the next night. Holla.
posted by phunniemee at 8:14 AM on February 25, 2013 [1 favorite]

I would be down for an Opera Meetup. I don't know from opera, but what I do know, I like.

Oh hell yes. Let's wait until next season. Next season looks like it'll be great.

Hey guys guess what. There is currently a semi stuck under the el tracks at LaSalle and Lake. I saw it happen. It was obviously not going to work (there was a traffic light hanging down clearly in the path of the trailer), but a cop motioned the driver to come on forward anyway. And now it's stuck, blocking traffic. There are at least six cops there now trying to deal with the fracas. I went up to another cop and was all, "look, your cop friend told him to come through like it was fine," and the cop was all "yeah but now it's stuck."

COPIST! Not all cops are friends with each other you know.

Wednesday is my last day of my kayak class, so I'm in for tired karaoke, but may skip the goat being that during lent I can't eat anything there anyway.
posted by garlic at 2:43 PM on February 25, 2013

no grilled cheese during Lent? thank heaven I gave up Lent years ago. . . .

I was wondering when someone was going to post this. I didn't want to be the same one again...

A little bird told me this is going to be EPIC. Make me proud, little cheepers.
posted by crush-onastick at 9:24 AM on February 28, 2013

I was not at the main preview, but I did go to the frog last night, and saw some of the setup. Even if you don't normally make it to karaoke with us, this time, you should seriously consider coming.

I've never been to one of these before, how will I know which one is the Metafilter Table.

Is it in the "VIP" section near the bathrooms
posted by theodolite at 5:40 PM on March 1, 2013

At the Goat? No, we're almost always on the LEFT, where the staff is helping us shove tables together.

At the Frog? it's the table marked "reserved for dickface and friends".
posted by crush-onastick at 7:10 PM on March 1, 2013 [2 favorites]

I think I can guess who dickface is.
posted by Evilspork at 12:19 PM on March 2, 2013 [1 favorite]

This might help.

I'm nervous about this surprise at the Frog. And bring my a-game? I have a hard time bringing my a-game when there isn't all this pressure.
posted by youngergirl44 at 1:06 AM on March 3, 2013

If I come to this will MCMikeNamara promise to be there too?
posted by shakespeherian at 8:45 PM on March 3, 2013

Dang, no pressure.

But yes, I will be attending.

Unless I don't. But I will unless... well, it would require AN EVENT to stop me. And the whole 'household has a solid organ transplant' is an excuse you can only play once. Maybe twice.
posted by MCMikeNamara at 8:32 AM on March 4, 2013

Grar. Looks like I'll be missing out on the Goat half, again. I should be at the Frog by 10-ish, though.
posted by eamondaly at 10:23 AM on March 4, 2013

Hey, I might actually be able to make this, but only because the project I'm on won't start on time. Boo delays, but yay mefites!

Also, I may have to stink-eye garlic for his successful attendance of the Poutine Fest. I'm still jealous.

Here is a cool picture of the original goat.

I wish today was Meetup Day. Getting anywhere is going to be a pain in the ass, but getting to the Goat seems like a lot more fun than trying to get home.
posted by MCMikeNamara at 2:27 PM on March 5, 2013 [1 favorite]

Today is Meetup Day! I went to special trouble (ok not really) to make sure Blink Dog is taken care of so I can go to the Goat portion of the evening as well. Really looking forward to tiny beers and MeFites.
posted by misskaz at 8:20 AM on March 6, 2013

Today is a coworker's birthday. That coworker is named Ben. Next week is Bevos' birthday. Bevos is named Ben.

I say this without the slightest hint of snark or sarcasm: Blingee is the best website ever created.

Not going to lie, I am a little smug with myself right now for being able to identify Ben Bernanke on sight, even with fairly obvious context clues. I'm so insufferable to myself sometimes.

Also, I guessed joon's word in 9 today, so I'm really quite full of myself this morning. I will attempt to get it all out of my system before this evening.
posted by MCMikeNamara at 8:43 AM on March 6, 2013

That's how I felt when I got question 8 right on this quiz.
posted by phunniemee at 8:52 AM on March 6, 2013

Aw I guessed the past tense of joon's word on 11 but didn't get back to the correct word until 18.

Looking forward to this! I have missed the last few Goat portions and it'll be great to catch up.

How would people with dogs feel about a dog meetup, like at Montrose Beach or something when it's warmer?
posted by phunniemee at 9:33 AM on March 6, 2013

Why is this afternoon going by so s l o w l y ? ? ? ? ?
posted by misskaz at 12:29 PM on March 6, 2013

It's going by much faster in Philly. It's already 3AM on Friday here.
posted by SpiffyRob at 12:49 PM on March 6, 2013

So... um... I'M STILL COMING, I promise, but might be an hour or so late to the Goat. Friend crisis, and she needs one-on-one talks right now. Gonna grab a drink with her elsewhere then come back to the Goat.
posted by misskaz at 1:18 PM on March 6, 2013

And I've changed my plans so I am coming to the goat.

Then kayaking.

Then the frog.

I will be very tired tomorrow...
posted by garlic at 1:55 PM on March 6, 2013 [1 favorite]

garlic what time are you getting there?
posted by shakespeherian at 2:27 PM on March 6, 2013

I will be a tad late to the Goat today. If someone would like to meet me at the Sally Beauty at 715 N State, you can help me decide what color my hair will be next week before it all goes away. I'm leaning towards hot pink.
posted by phunniemee at 2:29 PM on March 6, 2013

i have not left yet because my co-workers are just sitting there, playing chicken as to who leaves first. I guess I'm leaving now, and getting there around 5:15 or so.

also, blue is the correct choice of hair color. pink is acceptable though.
posted by garlic at 2:49 PM on March 6, 2013

Are we talking hair color colors or like anime hair colors, here.
posted by shakespeherian at 2:53 PM on March 6, 2013

We're talking I'm going to be bald in a week's time, why not destroy the everliving shit out of it while it's still here colors.

My daughter and I watched the Oscar Pre-show and decided we really liked Kelly Osborne's lavender hair. I don't think it's an easy (or cheap) effect to get tho.
posted by readery at 3:00 PM on March 6, 2013 [1 favorite]

I used to hate that color but now I love it. That might be because I have an inexplicable love of Kelly O. though.
posted by MCMikeNamara at 3:12 PM on March 6, 2013

Also I am on my way.

1. I got 11 of 12 correct on phunniemee's news quiz, including question eight. That surprised me since I usually rely on Rich to tell me the news when I get home, and even then it mostly consists of the bizarre stuff instead of actual news items.

2. I did not guess joon's word today because I got impatient and was all like, TELL ME NOW.

3. This would be the third goat in a row I've missed, but I'm torn about coming this evening. I'm pretty convinced that I have ebola and will start bleeding out of my eyes any second. Ok, not really, but I'm still not feeling well, even with antibiotics and cold pills and nasal spray and whatever else. I need to either nuke whatever is ailing me with many, many, tiny beers ot go home and rest.

4. I wish I had a hoodie on right now.

13 for 13, yo! Educated guesses on more than a couple, though.

Can we all agree that Aroon's R. Kelly is a suitable replacement for SpiffyRob's?
posted by eamondaly at 11:03 PM on March 6, 2013 [1 favorite]

Aroon does the best Ignition remix. I believe no other MeFite can compare.
posted by Zaximus at 11:05 PM on March 6, 2013 [1 favorite]

He is clearly superior to any former Chicagoan Mefites.

Also, misskaz, I'm home safely. Thanks for looking out for me! Safety first.

I had this really great idea of opening a really spicy Thai restaurant and calling it "That Was Way Harsh Thai."

Which is my way of saying that you can all go fuck yourselves. Now you never get to hear my Ignition (Remix) Remix.

New items on the to-do list:
-Figure out exactly where the vocals fills in "Ziggy Stardust" fall.
-Never ever attempt them again.

Out of curiosity, eamon did you know of "head like a maybe" prior to its posting on the blue, or was that just the quickest karoke transformation from online to real life ever?

I'm relieved to see that nobody inside the Frog noticed the high pitched scream caused by the rat which ran over me to the trash can as I left last night.

Or you noticed and ignored it because you are assholes. Which, given the treatment of our fallen-to-Philadelphia comrade in this thread I am also considering.

(though I did leave before the song in question so I might have been swayed. Because I am also an asshole.)
posted by MCMikeNamara at 10:24 AM on March 7, 2013

Cold Lurkey, I did not. I made the karaoke track yesterday during lunch.

Well, again, very well conceived, and very well executed.
And damn, the mutation of that earworm made it far more virulent.
posted by Cold Lurkey at 6:08 PM on March 7, 2013 [1 favorite]

It really has. I've been singing both songs both ways all week.

(Not that an actual scientist talking about mutation and virulence shouldn't be believed more than my anecdotal evidence.)
