Wed February 27 at 6:00 PM, OMSI
Oregon Museum of Science & Industry, 1945 Southeast Water Avenue, Portland OR, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
OMSI now has a Mythbusters exhibit in place. This months after dark will feature it, and is scheduled for the 27th. How about we get us some awesome SCIENCE! happening?
Tickets are $18 a person, I recommend ordering them ahead of time.

Do you know how much in advance these sell out (if they do)? I would love to go, but I don't know what my work schedule will be like yet.

I was warned trying to get tickets the night of would be difficult (more because of the lines of the last minute buyers wanting to get tickets than them selling out), but picking them up during the week should be OK.

Unless metafilters own asavage is showing up, I don't think event would actually get sold out. Of course, if we could get adam to attend this meetup, it would be awesome.

I was thinking we might want to try to plan for meeting up for drinks somewhere after getting through the event, someplace like Dig A Pony which is just a street car away from OMSI now.

Ooh! Science is my favorite kind of myth!

As long as they don't try to repeat that wine-tasting fiasco, I'm in.

Dunno if I can make this, but I wanted to say for anyone that hasn't done it, OMSI - children + beer is awesome.

OMSI - children + beer - (poorly-thought-out wine-tasting logistics) is awesome.

FTFY

can you tell the wine-tasting crap sucked? well it did.

YES.

MAYBE.

After Dark events are not normally as busy as it was during the wine tasting. I would totally be down with wine tasting with you peeps but maybe as a more organized only-MeFi kind of thing.

As for this I am possibly maybe.

almost definitely. I'm an After Dark member, and last time I found out I could walk there. <3 OMSI

Anothere question: Is there a sit-down "show" component to these or is it still a museum-like experience?

The event location is current "Portland Or, OR" and therefore not showing up properly under the "Portland, OR" filter.

I will try hard to make it to this!

Huh! I will try to fix address thing. It is weird.

I've only been to after dark once, but there was no sit-down experience- we just wandered the museum. There was beer and wine available for purchase, but I was feeling cheap and like I didn't want to wait in line, so I didn't buy anything and it was essentially the same as going to OMSI during the day, except no kids. There were a few extra special demonstrations scheduled. Surprisingly there were few or no free samples of food or drink when I went (I was kind of lead to believe there would be more) but I'm not sure this is always the case.

I can't speak for the Mythbusters exhibit, since that's pretty new- not sure what all is there for that.

According to this blurb on the OMSI website, "In addition to hands-on experiments that get your heart and mind racing, you can explore props and gadgets direct from the MythBusters set – and watch live MythBusting demonstrations put on by OMSI’s MythBusting facilitators." So as with the other After Dark events I've been to, some special temporary exhibits (separate from the regular stuff, that you only get to see if you pay the extra $6) and a few live demos...probably no 'splosions, more's the pity. Oh, and bring cash for any food/drinks you might want.

Okay, I'm going to commit. I'm going!

I haven't yet been to OMSI; is there a good spot where we can find each other?
posted by homodachi at 6:11 PM on February 26, 2013

The main and indeed only entrance has lots of room both outside (if it's not raining) and inside (if it is) for groups to stand in and be visible, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I have my ticket ordered, I will be there around 6ish.

Nice tableclothing, Greg. That was a nice time, and it was good to meet you, ansate, if only briefly. Also, protip: the Morrison Hotel bar has a really good brisket burger, like, if anyone ever wants a really good brisket burger.
posted by maqsarian at 9:13 PM on February 27, 2013

SERIOUSLY good brisket burger. Also the deep-fried cauliflower is good, but ya gotta like buffalo sauce.
