I'll be there with bells on! (Or maybe I'll leave my bellydancing costume at home, I dunno yet.)

I am beyond ridiculously excited.

Excellent! I'm going on a big bike ride that morning, so I may be a little dead. Just stick some tabasco in the cider or something and I'll perk right up.

Tentative here, because it's hard to plan much with lil ubu. I suppose it's only a walk uphill from Central, so near enough to not be a monumental waste of effort if he gets bored after half an hour.

I wonder if there are pinballs, or pokies? He'd probably enjoy pushing buttons for a bit. Maybe I could just leave him on a stool with a cupful of coins & let him press buttons for a few hours.

Would love to come but I'm afraid I'm out for this one. You will all have to listen to my repeated anecdotes at another date.

I am intrigued by the idea of non-shit, non-expensive tapas, however. What is it with tapas in Australia? After it stopped being trendy in the early-mid 2000s, I thought maybe the prices would leave the stratsphere, but it seems as crazy as ever.

Definitely no pokies, doubtful on the pinball.
posted by His thoughts were red thoughts at 2:44 AM on January 9, 2013

Yay, I'm in.

Ubu, fairly sure there are no pokies (it's one of the reasons I like the place!) but there's lots of weird stuff to look at on the ceilings and walls. Like a floating whale.

Smoke, just checked out the the menu with a sober eye and they're not crazy cheap, but they are good enough to be worthwhile, unlike every other tapas place I've been to in Sydney. (Melbourne's legendary Movida seems to have dragged tapas back into trendiness, but also dramatically raised the bar for quality. No more dinners out spent weeping into tiny bowls of soggy spuds drowned in canned tomato sauce). Also, pinxtos! (Which are like miniature tapas except uber trendy and hard to pronounce, I guess?).

Vidur, not only should you come, you should wear your Metafilter shoes.
posted by embrangled at 2:55 AM on January 9, 2013

No car, either. I'll have to ask them if there's a coolroom where he can be stored for a while.

On tapas, I think they've generally stayed the same quality & price, which means falling prices in real terms. Only, they've been replaced as the premium product by pintxos, which are exactly the same as tapas, only with toothpicks.

Come and meet TNJ a first and last time before TNJ lleaves and starts wearing black skivvies and complaining that Sydneysiders are crass and uncouth.

Because I can't abide black skivvies.

I think not. Perhaps I'll just bring a photo.

Thanks to having a 14 year old daughter, I am an expert on all things Shaun Diviney. Prepare to be edumacated.

Ex-lead singer of Short Stack, a mildly popular 'pop-punk' (which was SO not punk) band of 3 young dudes from Budgewoi. I think they were on the cover of Australian Rolling Stone at some stage. "Sway sway, baby, you're so audio, kill your boyfriend so we can get together". Not familiar? How about "Princess, why you so contagious?" Yep. Shakespeare they ain't.

Two of them are step-brothers... I forget which two. Broke up because of artistic differences, but thanks to the glory of Twitter, we now know they got sick of getting into fist-fights with each other after their gigs. The guitarist is an arrogant little smart-arse, the drummer is allegedly quite talented at anything music-related, into producing and whatnot.

Diviney's not a bad singer. He can do the Bee Gees type falsetto well. But not really my cup of tea.
posted by malibustacey9999 at 7:24 PM on January 10, 2013

I remember Short Stack, but despite working in the music industry and utterly loving pop-punk I haven't heard of Diviney.

Though I just realized that I'll be reviewing Big Day Out in Sydney alone. Any other MeFites want to have a post-meet-up meet-up there?

taff, hippie wisdom says that when a piece of jewellery is lost, it has served its purpose & it's time to move on.

When I first met Ms Ubu, I left a Ladakhi bracelet with her, that I had worn every single day for 12 years, when I took off to Peru for a month. She managed to lose it in 3 weeks, but we got lil ubu instead, only he doesn't fit on my wrist quite as well. In summary, babies are a poor replacement for jewellery.

Red thoughts - we won't be making it to your friends thing at the spiegeltent tonight. Too full of food and cocktails. I'm hoping to make it another weekend though because it sounds awesome!

He'll survive. But it's on for the next three saturdays too!

Is this to do with trivia? How about the Forest Lodge Hotel? They just picked up top rating for cheap pub food - I think in the SMH Good Living section or whatever they call it now.

Having said that, I doubt we'd be able to make it to regular pub trivia nights.

Also, did anybody reach out to qwip & amusebuche? I cycled past them a couple of months ago & think they're back in town semi-permanently.

I had memailed them both, with no response. :-(

I'd do trivia, but regularly could be complicated.

Oh yeah I def couldn't do regularly. But you know, that's better. Team Meffy can keep up mystique that way. I haven't done trivia in years and years - how do they prevent cheating with phones these days?
posted by smoke at 6:20 PM on January 12, 2013

"no phones" is a pretty universal rule, but there's no way to stop people nipping off to the loo to do some quick googling. in the end you just have to trust that people are being honest(ish).

It's really just a flimsy pretext to drink lots of beer.

The way to tackle other people cheating is: CHEAT FIRST!!!!!!!!

And yes, beer.

Thank you all. Thank you so very very much. I had a wonderful time last night. Sydney Mefites (and ring-ins) are, without a doubt, the sweetest, nicest, happiest, most interesting, most fascinating, most-welcoming, still-slightly-intimidating, most-able-to-produce-gorgeous-kids, loveliest people on the face of the planet.

PS: I took a pic of the damage to my car... my daughter appears to have dropped the camera during the night, rendering it unable to upload pics to my laptop. Sigh.

It could have been such a terrible weekend, with the dress disaster and the shoe disaster and the car disaster and the hair disaster and don't-start-me-on-my daughter's-chaperone-at-the-concert-who-had-her-boobs-signed-by-the-band... but I had a wonderful wonderful night, and next time I'm not a) bringing children to the big bad city or b) bringing my car to the big bad city.

XOXO. A big kiss on the cheek and a hug for everyone. Y'all are awesome.

Yeah - taff's kids are super cute. The matching dresses were a nice touch, I thought. And little Ubu is the most well behaved two year old I've ever seen. Well done, child producing MeFites!

Ha! In what universe was this not going to happen? I'm impressed that your daughter didn't get hers done too. At least it's not a tattoo. Of Diviney's face. On her neck.

XOXO. A big kiss on the cheek and a hug for everyone. Y'all are awesome.

Really glad that you could make it on such short notice, and that you had a good time.

I'd be in for trivia, sporadically. If it's regular, I get bored and flake out after a while.

Yeah, sporadic trivia for works me, too. We can be the mysterious geniuses who swoop in and claim the jackpot once every few months. Or, you know, drink beer and crack jokes while telling ourselves that we will one one day become such a team.

When does TNJ leave? If trivia is (at least initially) to be a farewell, it would probably be best to have it before then....

I'm going to Hot Dub Time Machine tonight, which I think someone at the meetup was involved in.
