Visiting Chicago, anyone want to meet at Hopleaf?

Sat January 5 at 7:30 PM, Hopleaf
5148 North Clark Street, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
I got a bunch of great responses to this question about what to do in Chicago, and one of the suggestions for things to do in Chicago is a meetup. So, does anyone want to meet up at Hopleaf on Saturday the 5th at around 7:30pm?
I may run a little late depending on traffic from Detroit.

I'm in, but you might want to make it earlier because the Hopleaf gets crowded. I suggest we aim for the upstairs part of the bar.

I mean this in all sincerity: There's an upstairs at the Hopleaf?

Yes shakespeherian.... there is a Santa Claus, er I mean upstairs at Hopleaf. Enjoy!

Man, if I didn't have a party already in some suburb I should probably look up soon, I would be all over this. :-/

Does this Hopleaf place have an address?

Does this Hopleaf place have an address?

Clark just south of Foster, on the west side of the street.

(goes and looks it up....)

The west wing is now open, so seating shouldn't be a problem. I have a thing so I can't commit, but I'll try to swing by!

Yay! I saw your question and wondered if there would be a meetup. Then I missed our monthly outing yesterday. I am 99% sure that I can be there.

I'll be driving in from Detroit, so I'm not sure how long it will take the two of us to get there. But if 6:30-7 is better timing for finding seating, we could just be the fashionably late ones to the party.

I could probably be there. MAKE IT A THING.

And yeah, with the new space now open there's a bit more breathing room, though it still does fill up especially on weekend nights.

I'll be coming back from snowboarding, but since it gets dark so bloody early and boarding under lights weirds me out, I should be right on time for this. Yay visits and tasty beers!

So I hope this doesn't screw everything up, _cave, but I hope you weren't planning for dinner at the Hopleaf. The restaurant part is separate from the bar part. I would be happy to join whomever in a meal, but dining at meetups gets complicated. The Hopleaf don't take reservations and they might not put us on the waitlist until everyone gets there.

good to know. If it's a small group maybe we could meet up for drinks at the bar and then get food afterward if we haven't had a chance to eat.

I mean this in all sincerity: There's food at the Hopleaf?

Hopleaf has amazing food, but you can order food in the bar section too. If there's not enough table space for everyone, eating-while-standing might be a bit difficult, but it's totally possible to get food on the bar side.

That said, I'm not sure if I can make this and I'm so burnt out on drinking beer after spending the holidays with my parents, but maybe?

A MEETUP IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD! Buuuut... that's the night of the Chicago sketchfest. Sigh. Well, if anyone else lives in the 'hood and would like to do this again some time, count me in! The Goat is just too far for this lazy chica to schlep to...

Also, hell yes there is food at the Hopleaf! The steak is AMAZING...

No go for me. Had derby all day today and now I have a thing in the early evening. Have fun!

I will likely be there around 8 and might have a plus one depending on the weather.

Fair warning to anyone who has seen me before: I am going to wear glasses out of the house for the first time in about ten years.

To _cave - I wear glasses all the time, I swear...

I'm going to start heading up early from Lincoln Park in a couple minutes. I'll try to grab some space around in the new part.

Got a table all the way around the bar, at the end of the new section (by the windows). It's low on chairs, but hopefully we can steal some from the table next to us as they leave...

Also, to help with identification, I'm wearing a bright yellow shirt over a black long sleeve shirt.

I'm on my way. I've got glasses and a mustache and a a bright blue t-shirt with a cartoon drawing of Wanda Jackson on it.

Weird bike problems so running late, but be there soon.

For anyone else coming, we moved to a booth in the same area, second from the end.

About to leave the house now. How in the hell do nearsighted women without contacts put on makeup?!? I can only move the mirror so close before it's ON MY FACE. That took about six times longer than it should have.

And the fog when you go inside from being in the cold! Wearing glasses is hard!

I was randomly given a copy of this at work today. How was your trip, _cave?
posted by hydrophonic at 9:32 PM on January 9, 2013

It was pretty great. We did the Clark St walk for about 5-6 miles, ate at the Soupbox, and met up with some friends on Day 1. On Day 2, we went to the library, walked around the loop, went to the Willis Tower, went to Millenium Park, had some pizza, and found the entrance to the pedway but didn't really have time to explore. This trip was way too short.

Neat! Here's a short film that you might enjoy.

Sorry to be late to respond back--Wisconsin doesn't believe in the internet--but that was an awesome video, hydrophonic!
