Superb Owl Sunday is coming up.

Sun February 3 at 4:00 PM, Green Dragon
928 Southeast 9th Avenue, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
It's February 3rd, to be exact.
First up is a movie (most likely Warm Bodies) at Regal Lloyd Center 10, followed by discussion over HEY LET'S JUST GO GET drinks at Green Dragon at 4:00.

I've tentatively set this for 3:00pm since we don't know for sure what the showtimes will be. Also, it may be necessary to arrive 30-45 minutes prior to showtime in order to get good seats.

We could combine this with the music meetup, or subsume it.

I vote for Whatever.
posted by mimo at 8:54 AM on January 2, 2013

My vote, I think, is for Games, Movies, or Whatever, in that order.

Movies- We talked a little at the last meetup about a movie meetup at our house sometime (could be superb owl, could be another date), but I kind of feel like our projector/speaker setup might not be great for a ton of people sitting comfortably. I don't know, I've never tried it. The couch fits 3-4, then everyone else has to sit on whatever other chairs can be huddled around, or maybe floor/bean bag chairs. Maybe that's not a problem.

So, "funny internet video revue" or episodes of TV shows would probably work good for a larger group, but sitting attentively for 2+ hours- you might get a little sore from a less than optimal chair.

Speaking of videos, we do have a DVD of Kenny Strass the Yo-Yo Master that probably should make it to a meetup sometime, if people are interested.
posted by Secretariat at 9:27 AM on January 2, 2013

Since enthusiasm seems to be lacking for the music meetup, I'll second mimo's suggestion that we just replace it with...whatever.

As usual, my house is available as a venue unless people are sick of it / we choose to do a movie thing (I don't have any sort of TV or projector) / someone else is keen to host.

homodachi proposes an interesting idea. Go to a movie as a group. We could follow that with a stop at a pub to discuss the finer and lesser points of the movie.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:18 AM on January 3, 2013

OK, Warm Bodies looks interesting, but can we all agree to stop with zombies now?
posted by mimo at 9:10 AM on January 3, 2013

No. Zombies can't really be stopped by agreement- it takes more violent measures.

Secretariat, did you watch the trailer? It looks like we'll stop the zombies with LOVE!

I am up for movies going or whatever.
posted by vespabelle at 12:43 PM on January 3, 2013

Whatever.
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:04 PM on January 3, 2013

Ok, I've watched the trailer now. I take it that we've been doing it all wrong- don't run from zombies, run to them. It seems zombies are like nettles, as in the poem:

Tender-handed, stroke a nettle,
And it stings you for your pains.
Grasp it like a man of mettle,
And it soft as silk remains.
posted by Secretariat at 10:26 AM on January 4, 2013

We need to clear off Greg's table and play a whole ladder tournament of folded-paper-triangle football and then have a bowl game afterward, which is like a normal game except you do the field goals into a large mixing bowl.

Or the movie thing and a pub afterward. I like drinking and deconstructing in a group setting.
posted by cortex at 10:47 AM on January 4, 2013

...which is preferable to drinking and being destructive.

Grasp it like a man of mettle,

As someone who regularly gardens without shoes or gloves, this is completely NOT TRUE. They know no limit to stickeriness.
posted by fiercekitten at 11:49 AM on January 4, 2013

The poem is referring to actually being Superman.
posted by cortex at 11:52 AM on January 4, 2013 [1 favorite]

So, it sounds like we're leaning towards zombie love movie followed by pub for deconstruction over drinks.
Is this assumption correct?
What time of day would work for everyone?
posted by nickthetourist at 9:47 AM on January 5, 2013

At a guess, shortly before the movie starts.
posted by Greg_Ace at 7:04 PM on January 6, 2013

I expect to be free afternoon/evening. For me, any good movie is ok -- doesn't have to be zombie love. Post-movie pub session would be lovely.
posted by bread-eater at 8:48 PM on January 6, 2013

At a guess, shortly before the movie starts.

Um....yeah....and what time of day would we like to see a movie?
posted by nickthetourist at 11:32 PM on January 6, 2013

The game starts at 3:30, so we could aim for somewhere in that ballpark to hopefully avoid crowds. That would take us to 5:30ish for food/beer.
posted by homodachi at 11:01 AM on January 7, 2013

somewhere in that ballpark

I see what you did there.
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:02 PM on January 7, 2013

I see what you did there.

Except 'the game', I gather, is American-style football which may happen in a stadium or in an arena where baseball may also be played, and ballparks usually are baseball fields designed exclusively for that purpose.

Have we decided on Warm Bodies in particular, or a movie in general? Because who knows how many theaters it will still be in in a month.
posted by mimo at 8:22 AM on January 8, 2013

Since the movie opens Feb. 1, it'd have to bomb really bad to be gone from theaters by the 3rd.

(though I have to ask - who releases a movie on Superbowl weekend?)

Superb owls do, Greg. They basically control Hollywood and the NFL.

What about the Regal Fox Tower 10?
posted by nickthetourist at 6:50 PM on January 8, 2013

Lloyd might be the better choice, since they've got a shitload of parking and aren't really any less accessible than downtown for transit. But that's just me spitballing.

The Fox Tower probably has more nearby options for places to grab a drink/food afterward. (We should also check beforehand that the place we choose to go isn't showing the game in the bar. :)
posted by homodachi at 12:36 PM on January 9, 2013

I would drive up from Corvallis to see Warm Bodies, though I am skeptical that zombies can remember love and/or be affected by it. I'm open to the possibility, but I'm not holding my breath or lowering my guard. Tricksy zombies can't be trusted.

Good call. No need for our ignorance to be triumphed over.
I suspect the safe bet is Green Dragon. Does anyone remember seeing a TV in there?
posted by nickthetourist at 8:17 AM on January 10, 2013

No TV at the Green Dragon.

There's also the theatre at Pioneer Place if Fox Tower doesn't have what we want to see.
posted by fiercekitten at 10:36 AM on January 10, 2013

Do you think Bailey's Taproom or Tugboat would work (no game, enough seating)? They are closer to Fox Tower than Green Dragon. If we're going downtown I don't think I'll be driving. And this Warm Bodies is a wide-release film, right?
posted by bread-eater at 10:56 AM on January 10, 2013

I'm thinking Lloyd Center and Green Dragon.
But Fox Tower and Tugboat/Bailey's could work. The difficulty is parking.
posted by nickthetourist at 11:46 PM on January 11, 2013

Ya I'm cool with either one. If I end up taking transit to Lloyd, I assume I can get a ride with someone to GD...

I'm moving towards a "probably not": my mom recently told me the epic origin story of the current quarterback for the 49ers, and despite my disinterest in sports, the drama compels me to watch!

please don't revoke my nerd card
posted by homodachi at 2:36 PM on January 30, 2013

Nick, that sucks! I thankfully already have the first round of midterms recently out of the way so I'm good to go for Superb Owl.

homodachi, bonus points for watching due to an "epic origin story" (which I'm now kind of curious about) but your nerd card is on shaky ground.

I shall do m best to get through as much as possible. May try to get to Green Dragon at the very least.

Showtimes for Warm Bodies at Regal Lloyd Center 10 on 2/3/13:
12:00
2:30
5:00
7:30
10:10

So, Warm Bodies at 2:30pm?

Or, if the preference is for something closer to 3, there is Hansel and Gretel Witchhunters at 2:50 PM, IMAX 3D. As well as many other movies. I haven't seen Lincoln, Les Miserables, or Life of Pi yet... but Warm Bodies seems the most Metafilter, somehow. I'm just having trouble imagining us seeing Les Mis and then tearfully discussing it over beers.
posted by Secretariat at 12:15 PM on January 31, 2013

I'm up for the following, in order of enthusiasm: Life of Pi, Les Mis, and Warm Bodies. So yes, 2:30 for WB would work for me.
posted by bread-eater at 1:22 PM on January 31, 2013

Everything seems to be showing either slightly before or slightly after 3, so really, I'm open to any of those (I've already seen the Hobbit and Django, and although I think I'd like to watch Django again sometime, I'm not ready yet).

What say you others?
posted by Secretariat at 5:07 PM on January 31, 2013

I'm still partial to zombie love, but haven't seen any of those other movies. but... I may not be able to make it due to family commitments. so, I'll go see whatever if I do make it.
posted by vespabelle at 10:02 AM on February 1, 2013

If very few people are coming out for the movie, I'm inclined to skip that, but I'm definitely still up for Green Dragon, at whatever time.
posted by bread-eater at 3:41 PM on February 1, 2013

That's my inclination as well.
posted by Greg_Ace at 3:50 PM on February 1, 2013

Yeah, I think let's just let the movie angle flop like a souffle.

So: beer at the Green Dragon! Should we start that a bit earlier than we otherwise would have, maybe? Say, start at 4:00? Then anyone who was dead set seeing a movie can still go to a movie and find folks there after.
posted by cortex at 4:12 PM on February 1, 2013

I think Green Dragon DOES have a TV, in the large seating area.. I remember watching bits of the game last time we were there. It doesn't really seem like the kind of place folk go specifically to watch a game, but it might be good to have a backup in mind.
posted by curious nu at 4:49 PM on February 1, 2013

I think we should commandeer the BEST seats in the house for watching the game...then blatantly, flamboyantly Ignore it.

That'll show 'em...something....by golly!
posted by Greg_Ace at 7:47 PM on February 1, 2013

I have laid my heavy hand over the post text to run with this idea. Hopefully it will be chill inside Green Dragon; with some luck the weather will be nice like it was yesterday and we could even sit outside.

Worst case if it turns out to be a weird miserable exception to normal Green Dragon cultural experiences, there are some other places nearby we could organize a march to.
posted by cortex at 9:28 AM on February 2, 2013

Possible really-nearby backups include Cascade Brewing, Buckman Brewing, Rogue, or we could even just go crash the bar at Grand Central Bowling.
posted by cortex at 9:31 AM on February 2, 2013

Man, I should not make crib notes off google maps without sanity checking that stuff. The aforementioned Rogue and Buckman are both presumably just actual brewing concerns, both of which have beer at Green Dragon (which is a Rogue concern). So yes, I am awfully awake.
posted by cortex at 9:37 AM on February 2, 2013

There are other places, in the area, regardless. Hair of the Dog is not too far away, and Lucky Lab is nearby too. Just to name the dog-related choices.

This actually works much better, and I wish I'd checked this thread earlier to lend my support to the change. I was considering bowing out of the movie so I could properly enjoy the 84k sq/ft of fabric at the mill end store, and now I don't have to miss anything. I'm looking forward to meeting folks. Woo!
posted by malthusan at 11:22 AM on February 2, 2013

malthusan, that's good- I was worried that this change was going to mess with your plans since you're coming from a little further away than the rest of us.

posted by nickthetourist at 12:41 PM on February 2, 2013

That map at the top of the thread is apparently still showing the location of the movie theater, not the pub. Just in case anyone's not already familiar with the Green Dragon, it's located at SE 9th and Belmont, not in the Lloyd District.
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:01 PM on February 2, 2013
