Food Truck Rodeo

Sun September 2 at 1:00 PM, Durham Central Park
501 Foster St, Durham, NC, USA (Map & Directions)
There's a Food Truck Rodeo happening this Sunday in Durham Central Park, 12:30-4:30 pm. Let's meet at the food truck lines!
It can get crowded, and the food truck lines can be long, but waiting in line is a chance to socialize and discuss what to order!

Who'll be there?

It's a rain or shine event. There's a big permanent structure for the farmer's market proper, so pack an umbrella if the weather's bad but you'll still be able to stay dry and nosh.

Maybe an initial rendezvous around 1:00? Trucks tend to trickle in and set up during the first half of a rodeo event, so getting there too early can mean eating your fill before the truck you wanted to try has begun serving.

Where would be a good rendezvous point? Obvious places are the southeast corner of the park, or near the rest room (don't laugh), but they might also be the most crowded.

Oooh, I'm already going with some friends. I won't be there till about 3 though. Hoping the food isn't sold out. I will wear my mefi shirt, so be on the lookout!

Also, if you all decide to come earlier, I can do that, too. YAY food truck rodeo!

I have never been - what's it like?? A bunch of food trucks just lined up? I'll google it, but just wanting to hear from you all!
Thanks!

Food trucks lined up, yes, at the Durham Farmer's Market pavilion in Durham Central Market. There will also be music, and great people watching. There's a good link in the meat of the post up there that links to the official event page.

I don't want to show up too late because in the past, some food trucks have run out of items pretty early on (at a previous rodeo Farmhand Foods had run out of a sausage sandwich I wanted to try just an hour after start time).

Would 2 - 2:30 pm be more doable for everybody?

(I can change the start time in the post if we reach consensus)

I'm happy to go whenever.

(and if your sausage sandwich was a smoked polish with pimento cheese? Yeah, you missed a good sandwich. get there at 12:30 if you have to in order to get one because YUM.)

I guess my girlfriend and I will head over at 12:00, and arrive at 12:30. We'll stay for a few hours. How shall we spot each other if we have never attended a MeFi event?

Stewriffic, yes, indeed it was the smoked polish with pimento cheese sandwich!

The plan for me then is to show up around 1 pm. I will be wearing a "Durham: It's not for everyone" shirt, and ardgedee will be wearing his mefi shirt. I'll try to attach something saying "mefi" somewhere on my clothing. Or MeMail me for telephone number.

(I think we need mefi buttons!)

We were at the Farmer's Market today (same location), and there were over a half-dozen food trucks and carts set up.

The Porketta truck's porketta biscuit is freaking awesome: BBQ pork on a biscuit. It's like eating butter, only it's pork!

OK, I'll show up at 1, too, wearing the I [+] Metafilter shirt.

Bummer, we are at the beach. Chapel Hill just had it's first food truck rodeo this past Thursday. It was wonderful. Have fun, everybody!

research monkey and I have discussed heading to Full Steam for a beer afterwards. We haven't committed or even given serious thought to it yet, but be aware that the possibility is in the cards. It's a short hike away from Central Park -- about two and a half blocks, up Rigsbee Ave between Corporation and Geer, and across the street from Motorco. Full Steam Brewery only has beer and packaged snacks -- assuming you're still hungry, there are usually three or four food trucks hanging around outside and across the street. Currently on offer in addition to the usual lineup is a One Hop Rye IPA (which tastes very lager-like, actually), and a basil ale that I want to try.

> what's it like?? A bunch of food trucks just lined up?

That, plus a lot of people eating, a DJ or band or both playing, and other stuff. It's a pretty awesome way to try a whole lot of things in one go, and it's even better when you attend with somebody you can share food with -- you don't get full as fast, and you can try even more different things!

I'll look for people wearing Metafilter/Durham t-shirts, as I no longer own any shirts with text on them. Bummer that MeFi shirts aren't sold anymore!

I will wear the following:

* A crew-collar t-shirt with stripes of blue, gray, and white
* Gray bermuda shorts
* Green Chaco Unaweep Z/2 sandals, no socks.
* Brown Timbuk2 messenger bag

I'll be there as well in a green/white ringer tee.

I'll be there with my husband! He'll be wearing an orange Baltimore Orioles t-shirt, and I'll be wearing a green dress with an orange scarf. I have a Metafilter shirt somewhere, but I'm not sure I could put my finger on it in time. I may make a sign or sticker of the Metafilter logo, and stick it to our chests and backs. And faces. And butts.

adgedee can't find his mefi t-shirt - crisis! So while at this point we have no idea what he'll be wearing, my Durham t-shirt is sorta close to a mefi blue. Oh, you can see what we look like in the pictures from the previous Triangle area meetup.

Am here early. Waiting first in line for the sausage wagon.

Will be waiting here for a while. They said 15 min more before they open. It's right next to the men's room.

Research monkey and I are on site. I'm writing this while I wait in queue at the Box Carr Farms trailer.

I've got a pale green thief, grey shorts, and a tan mini courier bag, ADHD a straw fedora.
posted by ardgedee at 10:23 AM on September 2, 2012

Shirt, not thief. We have successfully rendezvoused. Now to look for others.
posted by Stewriffic at 10:32 AM on September 2, 2012

Okay. 'thief' has to be the weirdest autocorrect substitution for 'shirt' ever.

We are in line for Only Burger

We're sitting on the turf in the middle of the park. Clerestory brought some awesome picnic blankets.

Bah, we walked around for an hour or so and didn't spot anyone. Neither of our phones work, either. GAHH. There were an annoyingly large number of non-MeFi people there wearing Metafilter blue, however!
posted by Coatlicue at 5:03 PM on September 2, 2012

Bummer we couldn't meet, Coatlicue. Hope you had a good time, all the same.
posted by ardgedee at 5:33 PM on September 2, 2012

Aw! I wish we could have made it, we went to the zoo today. You guys need to organize more of these. I'm curious about what people from the interwebz look like.
posted by Tooty McTootsalot at 5:39 PM on September 2, 2012

Sorry to have missed you, Coatlicue! We were looking for somebody fitting your description as we wandered about the area and visited the various trucks. I have to say, this was the most crowded food truck rodeo I have been to.

Tooty McTootsalot, at the Raleigh meetup we were discussing having a meetup next in Durham, possibly at Fullsteam or Bull City Burger, maybe we can do that soon?

The food truck rodeo thing today was very last minute, as I only remembered about it on Friday, and I was happily surprised at the number of people who responded. I enjoyed meeting all of you!
posted by research monkey at 6:38 PM on September 2, 2012

It's cool, research monkey, there will be other meet-ups! I'm glad you set this one up, because we didn't even know about the food truck bonanza. We would have missed out if you hadn't mentioned it.
posted by Coatlicue at 9:36 PM on September 2, 2012

I'm for a future fullsteam meetup! Don't let my leaving-early confuse anyone.
posted by oceanjesse at 8:04 AM on September 3, 2012

Also, one thing that could make it great would be playing some board games. Not monopoly or anything like that, but something fairly short. I have a few games in mind on my amazon wishlist; indie rarities hunted down from Board Game Geeks. These I could purchase if interest is piqued.
posted by oceanjesse at 8:11 AM on September 3, 2012

We can supply a ridiculous number of euro/indie board games, if called upon. Most of them accommodate 4-5 players per game, but we can always get a bunch of them going.
posted by Phire at 11:10 AM on September 3, 2012

Yes please to a meetup at Fullsteam! Then we can eat from food trucks without waiting in ridiculous lines. :)
