Wed September 1 at 6:00 PM, Billy Goat Tavern
430 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
You know it'll be at the Billy Goat and that there will be tiny beers, Horny Goats, and cheeseborgers. But will we end up at karaoke? Will elusive newbies show up? Will I be incredibly hungover the next day? The mystery cannot be solved unless you attend! posted by Juliet Banana to Meetup (91 comments total)

I propose, post-Billy Goat, that we head over to jtron's thing later that evening.

That's a great idea - both this thread and the afterparty.

I really like the idea of meetups having afterparties and after-after-parties...

because I act to like I'm still, you know, young and not the sometimes-too-old-to-even go-out-for-a-6:00-meet-up guy that I am now

I might have a league meeting that night, but if not, I'm there like a bear.

The Maybenauts are great! Well done jtron!

However, school just started again for me, so I'll be spending Wednesday evening balancing chemical equations and playing with acid. I'll have to subsist on auxiliary meetups for a while.

Some of us have profile pics that are our real selves. Generally we congregate on the left hand side of the Billy Goat as you come in, but it's not guaranteed. Just look for a big group of nerds.

Or, you could do what I did, and walk up to someone with interesting glasses and ask "are you from the internet?" Turns out, windigo is pretty cool :-)

I don't like beer, but I like pretty much all of you.

Work is truly horrible right now. But if nothing else, I will need steak and egg before going home. Post-game plans that are not karaoke at the usual place are unlikely to succeed with me, but you know. I like you kids. Let's see how this goes (if work doesn't rape more than one or two of my orifices)........
posted by sparkletone at 1:09 AM on September 1, 2010

I may have gotten 4 tipsy hours of sleep last night, I don't know, but I am coming anyway. I am hella exhausted/hungover so if I seem not my usual self (i.e. I only scream one comment about fellatio above the din of the bar instead of five) that is why.

Why does it always rain on Billy Goat nights? I know it's just my perception, but MAN there's a lot of rain the first Wednesday of the month.

No, it sure seems that way, doesn't it?
posted by adamdschneider at 7:26 AM on September 1, 2010

I will be making a Xoco run tonight. I get off at 4 so I should be at The Billy Goat with food by 5. If you're planning on arriving later (because you're not a freakish earlybird like Windigo) I can attest to the fact that Xoco food is great at room temp, based on the fact I always eat half my torta at the Goat and then drunkenly smash on the other half hours later at karaoke.

For those of you who weren't aware of Lorena Cupcake's Torta Delivery Service, please read this comment for details. Basically, if you want a handcrafted artisanal creation that could be described as a sandwich but should properly be called ART, I will bring it to you. If you want a griddled piece of meat on a bun, Billy Goat has you covered.

You should probably bring all the skulls you can. I'm pretty sure everyone's going to want one. I realize this is unlikely to be possible, which is why I'd like to remind everyone I have steel embedded in all parts of my body that I might hit with, or that you might try to hit.

Windigo: yes orange.

This all depends on how many we have left over and how attentive my boss is going to be today.

Well I guess that makes me the theoretical recipient of skull #3. I will not be insulted if this is not possible. However, I do know, roughly, where you live! Of course, you biked by me when I was standing front of *exactly* where I live so, advantage you.

Goddamn I want boorger and beer so bad. Wish there was some way to get out of here sooner.

3 hours til I'm free.....

Mark Beers shall not be attending, however, as he is sick and damaged and most likely in bed right now.

In other news, I bought really cute socks on my lunch break.
posted by Windigo at 11:32 AM on September 1, 2010

Whoa, I totally bought cute socks on my lunch break (knee high Betsey Johnson nylons in hot pink). SOCK TWINS. We can compare at five when we're both there super early!

I was trying to find sheer black lace top thigh high stockings but Filene's and Macy's were both totally disappointments.

I have approximately eighty billion pairs of socks/tights/stockings/OTKs and I wear them every day but I notice a simple pair of classic thigh high stockings does weird things to the brains of heterosexual men. It is like having a sexy superpower of boners and befuddlement.
posted by Juliet Banana at 11:44 AM on September 1, 2010

Dude, did you go to the Filenes by where I work on Michigan? That's where I went!

PS...

There's a new shop in Water Tower that just. Sells. Socks.
posted by Windigo at 11:57 AM on September 1, 2010

That is totally where I went. That Filene's has a great fringed drop waist dress that is pretty much screaming to be turned into a flapper costume if anyone's started thinking about Halloween, by the way.

TIME FOR WORD PROBLEMS

If a SpiffyRob boards a southbound Metra in Winnetka at 4:54 PM that he will exit at Davis Street to pick up the Purple Line that he will take to Belmont where he will switch to Red and take that to Grand and then walk to the Goat and commence drunkening, at what time will he be sauced?

I am wearing tan socks.
posted by SpiffyRob at 12:37 PM on September 1, 2010

ANSWER: Depends on if the drink is purple.

...any chance we could do a Chicago meetup there or anywhere else with parking?

I just moved to Irving Park, a block away from this gigantic, lush green area and tons of free, open street parking.

If people like picnics and bocce ball, I'd definitely be down for something before the weather gets cold.

posted by misskaz at 2:16 PM on September 1, 2010

Oh and january, the rule is: Our 1st Weds of the month meetup is always at Billy Goat (with very rare Special Treat exceptions) but ancillary meetups are allowed and encouraged.

The corollary is that if you want an ancillary meetup, you have to propose an ancillary meetup.

BACON COOKIES???????

Hell yes, bacon cookies.
And you'll be pleased to know that this might be the best batch I've ever made. PREPARE FOR TOTAL BACONATION.

misskaz: If they're a hit tonight I could easily be persuaded to bring them again.

You kids have fun. I'll probably be balancing double displacement reactions around the time you're eating borgers and drinking one million beers.
posted by lholladay at 2:52 PM on September 1, 2010

Ooh, Phunniemee, you live stumbling distance from Goldie's on Lincoln. DOLLAR PBRS AHHHHHHHHHHHH

Speaking of beer the dark seriously tastes off tonight. I would doubt my taste buds but I have had approximately 5,000 of these beers before and they were never this weirdly sweet or awful.

And, I mean, I'm the kind of girl who drinks dollar PBR so it's not like my palate is that refined or anything, there is a seriously weird aftertaste going on here.

Hey! They just replaced my beer for me from a different keg and it tastes fine! Disaster averted, and now I totally trust my taste buds.

January, I posted a helpful guide to picking a meetup venue a few months back that might help you pick a place that works better for you. Note that though you might not be a friend to public transit many people rely on it, so you'll probably want to factor that in anyway.
