London Pub Quiz! *REDDIT SHOWDOWN*

Mon October 10 at 7:00 PM, The Hat and Tun
3 Hatton Wall, Camden Town, Greater London EC1N 8, UK (Map & Directions)
Hi, guys! Well, I'm coming back. HandfulOfDust suggested we organize a meetup, and because HandfulOfDust is awesome, that's just what I'm going to do.
Meetup organized! And we've decided on a trivia night!
Here are the details:
Monday, October 10 at the Hat and Tun, Clerkenwell. Nearest tubes: Farringdon or Chancery Lane.
Quiz starts at 7.30 and runs for an hour and a half or so, and there's a £2 stake per player.
We've got two tables reserved...maybe we should show up a half hour or so early to hang out and chat?
UPDATE: we now have THREE tables reserved!
Apparently, the Hat and Tun serves an abridged lunch menu starting at 6 to accommodate folks there for the quiz, so there ought to be ample food options if you want to show up early for dinner.
I think we should all (dinner or no) try to be there by at least 7 so we can organize the teams to maximize everyone's kickass factor.
See you guys soon!
And a BIG thanks to HandfulOfDust for setting everything up and (update!) bringing me up to speed on food and the like!

Tate Modern has late opening on Fridays and Saturdays.
Tate Britain is open late once a month, next up is Friday 4th October. That was pretty good last time: they had video installations, live music, a bottle pay-bar and you can wander round. Downsides: not many seats, and you have to pay for the temporary exhibitions

Handful of Dust is awesome, and I endorse this meetup idea. The 7th works for me, but open to other dates. Not particularly fussed about the Tates, having been to both of them several times, but I'd certainly go again.
Another option might be one of the museums (Victoria and Albert, Science Museum, Natural History Museum...) some of which also do late nighters.

Flagged as fantastic! You're awesome too, phunniemee – you as well, Infinite Jest – we're all awesome. Yay us!
/Kate Winslet moment ends/
Anyway, great that you're back in town, and I'd love to come along to whatever, wherever, whenever. Either of the suggestions so far sound fun to me, but I wonder if Fridays might be a bit tricky for phunniemee? – too close to the weekend and liable to clash with weekend escape plans, I mean.
This list of museum and gallery late openings might be useful in the meantime – Sir John Soane's Museum opens late on the first Tuesday of every month, and is great by candlelight (gets a bit busy though). Veering sharply off the Something Cultural track, I've always really fancied getting a team of Mefites together for a Pub Quiz – but maybe that's something for another time. I don't know.

Yeah, I think a Pub Quiz Night is potentially hilarious – does anyone else, or does the whole notion have you all heading for the hills? I've no doubt we could field a killer team (even with me in it). Getting the right venue/quiz master etc is vital though.

As for pub quizzes, a colleague has had good things to say about the Monday night quiz at the Hat and Tun in Clerkenwell, while my brother (a keen quizzer) reckons that the Tuesday night quiz at the Flask in Hampstead is the best one in London. Does anyone else know of any other good 'uns?

Well I'd be happy with either one too, so I suppose it boils down to who can make it when and to which venue!
I've phoned both pubs, and we'd have to reserve a table about a week ahead in both cases, so that nixes Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 September. Here's a rundown of what's on offer:
Monday 3 or 10 October at the Hat and Tun, Clerkenwell. Nearest tubes: Farringdon or Chancery Lane. Quiz starts at 7.30 and runs for an hour and a half or so, and there's a £2 stake per player.
Tuesday 4 or 11 October at the Flask, Hampstead. Nearest tube: Hampstead. Quiz starts at 8.30 (bit late, maybe??), and the stake is £1 per player.
There's a maximum team size of 6 in both cases – you can field larger teams, but you lose one point per extra player.
I can make any of those dates and either venue... What about the rest of you?

Likewise. I've already used up almost all my annual leave (until May....), so I really can't take any time off.
3/4th would be better for me as I'm travelling on the 12th, but I can do 10/11 October if that's the consensus.

I just phoned the Hat and Tun to confirm that they still have availability, and the 3rd is fully booked already! (sorry honey-barbara) – so 3 October at the Hat and Tun is out.
We could get two tables for the Pub Quiz at the H&T on the 10th, if that's what you're all still up for, or check out the Flask for the 4 and 11 October. Or eat steak at Wetherspoons on the 10th. Decisions decisions. Somebody make one!

Mr Bad Example! – hit the 'yes, I'm attending' button at the top of the page, and we look forward to seeing you on the 10th.
Grangousier – we've reserved two tables, so that's two teams with a maximum of six players per team. You can field a bigger team, but you lose one point from the final score per every extra person, so technically there's no limit to team size – but of course your chances of winning are greatly reduced.
Gah. I thought we were being a bit optimistic reserving two spots, but now I'm anxiously wondering if we shouldn't have booked THREE.
My team name suggestions:
Team 1. Fazed and Confused
Team 2. The Ass-Jittering Cattle

Just confirming, I definitely won't be there, sadly. I'm now starting a bit of a cold, and as I'm going on holiday on Saturday and have a ton of work to do before then, I need to kill my germs and my workload.
This is unfortunate, as I have an encyclopaedic knowledge of popular television (specialist subjects: the 1970s, The Office and the various Real Housewives series), as well as a head full of all sorts of rubbish that often yields results in a quiz (example: I was the only person who knew what a comedo is. My team won by one point.)
I will follow the live blog with interest ...

Ooh, ooh, another late entry! Any word on a fourth table?
If we're all full, I'll happily join the corner brigade and drunkenly howl us along to victory!
Is anyone bringing cake and candles for The Birthday?

I just heard back on a fourth table...we got one, but it's small. Apparently, this one's going to be packed and seats will be at a premium.
So, we have: three tables of six and one table of four. (Supposedly.) We'll see how it goes. :)

Good news about the fourth table!
Did you ask her about how they'd feel about us livestreaming the event? Hilarious though I think that plan is, I really do think we need to check before we turn up with all the gear. I'm also angsting a bit about how much room there'll be for supporters – the pub's on the small side. Shall I phone and get the lowdown?

That would be great! I (briefly) explained what was happening (i.e. we are from the internet and competing against a warring internet faction), but didn't mention anything else about video, pictures, etc. It took her a while to respond to the email, so perhaps a call would be better.

I think she works Monday to Friday only (the pub's closed at weekends), hence the nailbitingly slow response to our request for an extra table. Anyway, I'll give her a ring at lunchtime and see what we can get away with. I do love the idea of streaming the whole extravaganza, but I have similar qualms to those expressed by TheophileEscargot and Infinite Jest in the other thread. We shall see.

I have badges, by the way.* I was making a lot of badges for something else and slipped in a batch based on the Favorite cards that iamkimiam was handing out. I actually have no idea why. It was a bit of a badge frenzy.
If anyone's interested in such things.
I expect a team from B3ta or Fark will show up and wipe the floor with the rest of us. I'm not very good at competitive, I'm afraid, but am looking forward to the meeting up bit. More excitement than I've seen on a Monday night in a while.
*(Though I do realise that we have no need of stinking badges.)

What? Badges too?! This is looking like seven shades of awesome :)
Primary strength: song lyrics
Secondary: random and disconnected pop culture nonsense
Aspirant: things geological
Weakness: All other known facts
I'm not usually first to be picked for the pub quiz team

Badges?? Crikey.
So: livestreaming. As Infinite Jest and TheophileE predicted, there are issues surrounding the privacy of the other, non-Metafilter/Reddit competitors (for that matter, the Redditors might object). Anyway, the Events Manager has said we can livestream it, but only if the Manager agrees (he won’t be around until about 6), and definitely only if we have the consent of everyone competing – fair enough, I think. I can’t see why anyone would object (what killjoys!), but you never know.
Who wants to take this task on, though? Surely everyone would rather be playing?

Something that just struck me (because I'm quite slow) - the nice thing about the Reddit challenge was that all the Metafilter teams weren't competing against each other as much as competing against the Reddit teams, so we all won. It would have been different if it was just us, and maybe not as nice. Very grateful to the Redditors for that. I have the signed thing they presented us with - I should scan it and put it somewhere - stuff still going on Flickr?

It was quite a nice pub, so I'm tempted to say 'exactly the same place in about six weeks time'. It was nice that it was a smallish place and _everyone_ in the pub was doing the quiz.
Then again, I gather the redditors wanted to enter more teams but couldn't because there was no space left, so maybe we should find a larger pub quiz?

There was some talk in the Reddit thread about maybe doing a further quiz for charity, so they might well be up for a rematch.
The B3tans have London meetups, I think they might be up for it if asked too.
Could be a nightmare to organize though, and those of us who keep our real-life identities separate would find it hard to get much sponsorship for a charity thing.
