Wed August 17 at 8:00 PM, The Corner Hotel
57 Swan St, Richmond VIC 3121, Australia (Map & Directions)
Pubquiz in Melbourne. Last meetup there was some talk of getting a mefi team together for a trivia night. Anyone in?
I'm pretty sure Wednesday was proposed and there was a specific venue folks had in mind, but I can't remember what it was.

Jess McGuire does trivia at the Corner in Richmond on Wednesday nights. She also hosts trivia in a few other pubs around town on other nights. I think she's at the East Brunswick on Tuesdays, and possibly others? She announces the nights on her Twitter stream, anyway.
I've been to one of her trivia nights at the Corner and really enjoyed it. The team I was on (with another mefite & friends of his) came a very close second (w00t!) The questions covered many eras of music/film/tv trivia.

Another fun trivia host is Mark who, with his trusty sidekick does a blend of trivia covering pop culture, general knowledge and current events & throws a 70s/80s game show spin on things. I used to go along when they did this at the Nash in Victoria Street, Richmond. A quick google shows them doing Tuesday nights at The Terminus, also in Victoria Street, and maybe also at The Lord Newry on Thursdays.

I like me some trivia - I'm in.

Ooh. This sounds good. I'd like to do it if m'lady will babysit.

Hmm, maybe, as long as you are not expecting me to answer anything about sport! But a little work travel coming up, so I'll see if it fits.

Yeah sounds fun! Maybe Wednesday at the Corner or Thursday at Lord Newry? Next week would be better for me than this week.

How are the next few Wednesday looking for everyone? Say the 17th or the 24th?

It starts about 8pm, but I think someone needs to be there by 7.30 to register properly. We will need to book in advance with the Corner.

Either are good with me, and I should be able to turn up early for table-guarding duties.

wednesdays at the corner is good for me... 17th almost certainly, 24th for sure...

17th is good with the boss.

I'm away for the 24th, but next wednesday looks good to me! The corner is a hop skip and jump from my new place, so I'm damn happy with the location, too!

Sweet!

Wednesday is out for me, but I'd be keen for Tuesday at the Terminus - 86 tram ftw!

17th and 24th are ok with the work travel schedule for me!
posted by AnnaRat at 5:15 AM on August 4, 2011

Looks like there's a pretty broad consensus for the 17th at the Corner, so let's make it official. Put it in your calendars! Gosh, are you able to reserve for us?
posted by mosessis at 7:26 PM on August 4, 2011

Yep! I'll give them a call. Thanks mosessis!

I'll be there! Hopefully my science knowledge will make up for the fact that I am useless when it comes to Australian history and sports.

the 10th also works for me... scout out the likely opposition before the main event next week?
posted by russm at 4:27 PM on August 7, 2011

So russm, myself and pompomtom look like we'll be there this Wednesday night (as well). Feel free to turn up people!

Booking, do you have to book? Can't see anything on the Corner's website. Here's Jess' facebook site, she seems to suggest calling on 9427 9198.
posted by wilful at 6:04 PM on August 7, 2011

There is a table booked for the 10th under the name: "I'm too useless to read a calendar or tell my wife when I'm allowed out/MeFi warm-up".

I hope many may be able to turn up, without that precluding their attendance of the main event.

well it was russ that said it was this wednesday...

You think my mocking table name isn't long enough as-is? The poor bird on the Corner tix line already thinks I'm a loon.

Besides; russ basically mocks himself.

russ basically mocks himself.

This had better not be an excuse for going easy on him; it's a bigger job than one russ can handle.

I'm in for both this week & next week.

Also, as far as I'm aware, Jess's trivia covers music, film & tv, so knowledge of science, sport, geography, and everything else is not as important as having had a wasted youth in front of the telly.
posted by goshling at 5:15 AM on August 8, 2011

Oh, perhaps someone should post a new thread so the 10th shows up on the sidebar, otherwise it's going to be missed. And we probably need all the brains we can get.

Tom: did the poor girl taking the booking mention anything about maximum team sizes? I thought there was a max size, but I might be confusing Jess's trivia with another trivia night.

Ah well, I'm screwed then. I used to get the pink horrors playing trivial pursuit. Blue, green, yellow, brown, all good. Pink no way. And I can't recall what the other colour was.

No, but I didn't ask.

That's because pink was (American) entertainment. The answer was either 'Mickey Mouse', or something that required US citizenship to know.

(The other colour was orange, to which the answer was 'Emil Zatopek')

I just got inspired to do a google images search for pink horrors. I still ❤ W40K

You obviously didn't have the Australian version of the game, the one where the pink answer is always some Neighbours star from the mid 90s. Yeah, I do great on those. Almost as good as the "who lost the 1956 Grand Final" questions.

TBH I do feel a bit better getting baseball questions wrong than AFL ones.

This Wednesday's booking is under the name "Kate" (Kate, Short For Bob). We'll probably be spread across 2 tables as I said there'd be around 12 of us. Booking is for 6pm for people who like to arrive early. (I'll probably be there about 7).
