Seattle! I am coming to visit!

Sat April 9 at 8:00 PM, Shorty's
2222 2nd Ave, Seattle, WA, USA (Map & Directions)
I'll be in Seattle the weekend of April 8-10, and I'd love to see you all. Yes, all of you. Saturday evening works best for me - 7:30? 8 pm? But I leave it to more experienced Seattleites to choose a venue. mrzarquon will be in town as well, so you get two for the price of one! Site confirmed: Shorty's it is! Thanks, Jawn - one of us will search you out to let you know we're there.

uncertain but not implausible, I have been a busy beaver here of late. Are you traveling together, and where will you be staying if so?

I think this may be opening weekend for the beisbol here, also. But I am an ignoramus about such (dates, that is). I will review and advise.

The Pinball Museum in the ID is walking distance to Safeco, and the opening stand is supposed to in some way involve fundraising for Japan. It has been my intent to attend a game for this reason, but my plans remain fluid.

We're coming up separately, but are both staying at the Renaissance (5th and Madison).

I think I will see about making this one! Thankfully, it is not the same weekend as WordCamp Seattle (which I am confirmed for) so it is quite a possibility!

You know I'm there.

Last time we went to Bill's. But if pinball is on the cards, Shorty's is the obvious answer to continue the theme.

I'll try to go as long as it's busable. That's the curse of being back on the east side.

My record on these lately is appauling, so I won't make any time/venue suggestions, but I am vaguely in support!

I'm also tentatively in. What kind of thing are you/we looking to do? Is pinball the Seattle meetups' thing now?
posted by librarina at 9:32 AM on April 2, 2011

I almost certainly suck at pinball, since I never did play much back in the day, and that day is now a zillion years in the past. Pinball or just hanging out at a bar or some combination thereof, I'm good either way.
posted by rtha at 10:21 AM on April 2, 2011

Shorty's won't be able to handle our group on a Saturday night unless we manage to reserve the back room, and that's probably not going to happen. Plus Shorty's smells funny, and I say that as a smoker. And as a Belltown resident I suggest avoiding Belltown bars on weekend evenings because they tend to be full of the popped collar bridge and tunnel crowd.

However, it is within walking distance of rtha and mrz's hotel.

My votes go to:

Stumbling Monk. (Really good beer.)
Bill's off Broadway. (Cheap, handles a crowd, decent beer.)
Elysian. (Also handles a crowd, good beer.)

All three of these are up on the hill.

But as long as it's near downtown/capitol hill I don't really care where it is as long as it can handle a crowd and we're not divided into separate booths.

Also, I may be hosting an afterparty at my place if there's people into it.
posted by loquacious at 2:42 PM on April 2, 2011

You guys want the back room at Shorty's? No problem. It's not exclusive, but if you get there early and grab the tables you need they're all yours. I normally open at 8 back there but would be happy to open a little early if there's a decent number of folks showing up.

Wow, for reals? What say you, mefites of Seattle?
posted by rtha at 6:48 PM on April 2, 2011

I personally have no complaints or objections to Shorty's with that kind of personal invite. It's really close to my place and there's good bus access for those coming into the area from outside of downtown and/or Capitol Hill.

Besides Errant and maybe y2karl I'm not sure who else is actually up on them thar hills.

Hey Jawn? Do you have the ability to turn down the music just in the back room? One thing that we've had a problem with at (many/most) previous meetups is music being way too loud to have a conversation. Some people who may be showing up have difficulty hearing when there's too much background noise, and others are uncomfortable with shouting to converse, so they don't.

And we tend to be loud enough just talking that we don't need even more noise to try to shout around.
posted by loquacious at 7:15 PM on April 2, 2011

I'm still a maybe-maybe based on baseball, but Shorty's sounds awesome, I'm always up to see what in God's name has happened to Belltown since I was last there. Now that the Croc's open again there might even be music later.

So, what is that? An invite and three expressions of interest, one insubstantial as kleenex. Do we have a quorum under MeFite rules of disorder?

oh, and I mentioned the Pinball Museum upthread not because of a silverball clause in the clickthrough TOS but because I'm looking for an excuse to spend a Saturday afternoon there and the game was on my list of maybes for the day. I kinda lean to Sunday for the game because that'll be a day game, less freezing in the stands likely.

I am up thar on them hills! And I'm late to thread but game for anything! Of course I would prefer cap hill (I live quite literally 1.5 blocks from the Stumbling Monk) but I also have a bus pass and am fine with traveling.
posted by kthxbi at 10:48 PM on April 2, 2011

I have control over all the music aside from the jukebox. It's set on an annoyingly loud volume that gets limited after 5 seconds or so, bringing it down to a semi-tolerable level (the main problem being that it's full of somewhat obscure jazzy stuff and some Johnny Cash, so all that ever gets played is the same half dozen songs by Johnny Cash). In the past when I haven't wanted to deal with it I've called it 'broken' and taped over the bill and coin collectors. It could very well 'break' over the weekend if noise is an issue.

And a super secret heads up. There very well may be new seating back there by next weekend.. We're going to transition from one awesome large booth and a couple undersized tables to three booths along the South wall. It doesn't sound like the overall number of seats will increase, but it will be more better. If they're the booths I think they're going to be a large party split across the three will work rather well, there's plenty of room to talk over the booths, and they'll fit a larger number of people in a more confined space. Delays are always a possibility, but all signs point to the change happening this week.

And I'd highly recommend visiting the Pinball Museum earlier in the day. They've got the largest public collection of pins in town and a great selection of older games you don't see many other places. I think the current price is seven bucks for free play pinball as long as you like, the best deal in town as far as I'm concerned.

And now that I see there's talk of Sunday. I'll be working that night as well, and you'd probably have the room all to yourselves then, it's generally pretty quiet. If you are looking to avoid the weekend fools in Belltown Sunday might be a good choice (though of all the spots in Belltown, the Trophy Room is probably the most insulated from drunken idiots, I have little patience for fools).

I'm leaning vaguely toward trying to make the drive over from Spokane for this meetup. Finding a cheap hotel with easy access will be paramount, as I'm less made of money right now than ever before in my life. But it'd be groovy to meet all you crazy west-siders, plus rtha and mrzarquon.

Anyway... leaning... vaguely....

Okay, so, is all this talk about Greenwood just the same kind of spoofing like when people here talk about Spocompton and Spokaloo and stuff?

Because I laugh every time someone in Spokane tells me that they are afraid of certain neighborhoods at night. Like they're the equivalent of bad Chicago neighborhoods or something. And really, Spokane is one of the tamest places ever.

I'd love to say "I speed through Greenwood to get to Crown Hill/Phinney Ridge/Broadview," but it is pretty much impossible to do that most days with all that freakin' traffic.

NW 80th and NW 15th is honestly far worse than Greenwood. The liquor store is next to the plasma center. But it is easy to speed through there (so long as you don't run the stoplight -- it's photo enforced.)

Aw, I should have gone. But I was watching a friend play music, and that was fun too. If the two locations had been closer together I would have gone to both! Maybe next time? (I dare you, meet on Beacon Hill.)

I demand a GREENWOOD DEATH ZONE meetup!

That was incredibly fun. I love Seattle mefites!

*Is* there anywhere to meet on beacon hill? I'd love a good bar that's closer walking distance than Cap Hill.

If you want a meetup in your own neighborhood, just organize one. No one else is likely to organize a Beacon Hill meetup; sorry.

We shall meet on the peak of Mount Amazon!

Although Art is jolking like an eggman on a milkrun, a MeFi thing at or near PacMed has great promise. That's less than two blocks from the intersection of the two longest roads in the world and said intersection (well, a block out or so) also boasts the wonders of Viet Wah and the Tamarind Tree.

Amazonians, get cracking. We'd love to tromp your 'hood.

Two blocks and a fucking great ravine...

There's a bridge! I realize, when crossing it on foot one is a totally easy target for ebay snipers, but it has sidewalks!

Having crossed the Ballard bridge and the Aurora bridge I feel like I should get some kind of campaign medal each time I slog across one of the fuckers. Not advisable.

fine. *you* can go down in the valley and back up and *I* will sit calmly and enjoy my Vietnamese coffee.

In all seriousness, that bridge has a *lot* less traffic than its' brethren, I think even less than the Ballard low bridge. But unless some Amazon person is inviting us to a Scotch tasting in Bezos' Gothic lair high above the Duwamish, there may be no need to work out the details.

Thus far, my notes indicate some sort of MeFi flash mob in the back room at Gary's Games.

"*Is* there anywhere to meet on beacon hill?"

Not so much at the moment. I was sort of joking. Though we have both a pizza place and new pub scheduled to open in June or so. And rumor has it, an Indian restaurant opening around the same time. Things are looking up on the hill. Perhaps when the new pub opens a meetup would work.

I thought Amazon was mostly moved away from Beacon Hill.

Heck yeah, an International District meetup would be fun, too. Could take the train and not have to worry about parking.

Amazon has in fact mostly moved out of PacMed. I moved out a few months ago and I think everyone is out now. SLU is honestly much better a location. I can meet people after work now! There's a german pub five tiny blocks away!

Well since Beacon Hill (almost) my neighborhood, I'd be up for that too ... or even a Mini MeFi Meet Up for the, er, two (?) of us who live out here ... or maybe just beers or something.

We're all "Greenwood is a no-go zone!" but (almost) none of us will venture near the U District anymore after dark.

But, anyway, I highly doubt any of you will go for a Maple Leaf/Northgate meetup, so I'll just have to keep going south, leaving my house and cars vulnerable to the recent crime wave. Three robberies in the past month! THREE!

Y'know, the idea about having a Tamarind Tree meetup's a pretty freaking good one. (Seven courses of meat, y'all!) (And lemongrass martinis for the veggie folk.)
