Sat April 16 at 2:30 PM, Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art
594 Broadway, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Anyone interested in seeing the Will Eisner New York exhibition at MoCCA? After some discussion, I figured Saturday, April 16 might be an auspicious date. I've been to the space before, and though the place isn't huge, this one looks fun. It's $5. Could do lunch before in Chinatown/SoHo also or just meet up at museum at 2:30.

I'd be down for Saturday meetup for this. I want to see this exhibit anyway.

I can pretty much only do weekend NYC meetups anyway (I work M-F in NJ) . I expect mass transit should be fairly straightforward.

I'm interested.

interested...waiting for the vagueness to resolve itself into a date. Cool idea!

How does Saturday, April 9 sound? I'll change it out of proposal mode once folks are ok with a date.

I'm interested if it's a couple of weekends later in April.

I would also be interested in another weekend- I am at a wedding on the 9th.

Any weekend is fine by me. I feel like Chinatown dim sum deserves a meetup event of its own (can't believe it's been a year since the last one). For a Golden Age comics meetup, I feel I'll be craving a good corned beef sandwich & some pickles. Somewhere like Katz' Deli, but less expensive & crowded.

Saturday, April 23? Not sure about corned beef in the area, but IIRC the meatloaf sandwich at Fanelli's is good. That Golden Age enough?

MoCCA is really awesome. I'll try to make it if it's convenient. Earlier in April I will be more available.

If it happens on April 9, I may join you since I'll be in town that weekend!

Ok, I'm going to split the difference and set it for Saturday, April 16. Hope that works for some, and perhaps the others can grab those who have been orphaned to see it on other weekends?

My family will be in town on the 16th and I'll be frantically cooking and cleaning. I'm sorry I won't be able to hang out with you guys and see the Will Eisner stuff.

If anyone else can't make this date and wants company on another weekend, let me know. I'm always up for company for museum trips.

The 16th is best for me (I'll be in the city, but booked on the 9th) -- However, MoCCA looks to be having a festival this weekend: http://www.moccany.org/content/mocca-festival
The MoCCA Festival will take place over April 9-10, 2011 at the Lexington Avenue Armory located at 68 Lexington Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets. The annual two-day event attracts thousands of comic art lovers and creators from around the globe to celebrate the world’s most popular art form in the heart of New York City. Since 2002 the MoCCA Festival offers a unique venue to experience comics, mini-comics, web comics, graphic novels, animation, posters, prints, original artwork and more. Each year, the Festival invites dozens of established and emerging creators, scholars, and other experts to participate in two days of lecture/discussion panels on a variety of comics and cartoon topics. For 2011, the panels and programs are being organized by Brian Heater (The Daily Crosshatch)

I'm interested but have a dumb question, never having been to a meet up before. How do you know who people are? Is it just because their milling around looking at people?

I usually wander around looking lost and someone asks if I'm there for the meetup. Or I'll walk up to someone else who seems to be loitering the same way and ask, and eventually there's enough critical mass that there's a group of geeks to approach.

Did anyone want to meetup for lunch first?

Good to know there are no name tags or a secret salute or anything.

Excellent. How about Fanelli's at 1:30 or do folks want to brave the Saturday dim sum rush? Or another option?
posted by jng at 5:58 PM on April 14, 2011

Seems like we have too many maybes to attempt dim sum. Fanelli's (94 Prince Street between Mercer & Greene?) sounds fine to me.

That sounds good to me!

Made it to Prince Street, will wander around window-shopping for a bit. (Anyone I haven't met already, I am the redhead in the blue coat with a giant pink handbag and big brown umbrella)

Stuck in NJT - track trouble or something. Will get there as best as I can.

Fanellis is MOBBED! I'm wearing a brown coat, blue-green shirt and black cords.
posted by brujita at 11:02 AM on April 16, 2011

Fanelli's was too crowded - jng, brujita & I have relocated to Soho Park, on Lafayette & Prince, in the greenhouse-ey part.
posted by oh yeah! at 11:20 AM on April 16, 2011

And now I'm walking up and down the road getting soaked, completely unable to find the museum that nobody in the area has heard of. Five mor minutes and I'm going to give up.
