A Beer in Sydney on 3/9?

Wed March 9 at 7:30 PM, Glenmore Hotel
96 Cumberland St, Sydney New South Wales 2000, Australia (Map & Directions)
Hi there, Aussie MeFites! I am currently on a solo three-week road trip through your lovely country. It's been a ton of fun! I will be flying home from Sydney on March 10th, and will have a free evening in the city the night before -- Wednesday, March 9th. Would any of you care to meet up for a beer with a lonesome traveler?
Time and location totally flexible after 5 pm or so, and I will be equally delighted if this turns into a large gathering or a low-key beer with just a few folks.

I would love to, but unfortunately I won't be around that day.

Hi Eugenen,
Sounds like a plan. Not 100% sure what is happening on that night but assuming there are no family or client panics, I am in!

I would LOVE to but I'm in the foothills of the Himalayas visiting the inlaws...not back till the 28th. Bugger! Next time?

Sounds good. If there is no last-minute work stuff, I'll be there. And by there, I mean.. how does The Argyle sound?

I've got a work thing that night til like 7:30, but if you all are still going, I can stop by! Just let me know where/when.

I'm on the evening shift as well that night, but if you're still going by 9-9.30 or so, I may be able to make it.

taff: make sure you drink heaps of delicious Himachal Pradesh apple juice - the kind that comes in tall glass bottles around 750mL & is cloudy & tastes like fresh appley goodness. From memory it might be around Rs20 a bottle, ie roughly 50c.

I can probably be there. (Whee, first MeFite meetup!)

Ooh, the Argyle sounds great. Why don't we tentatively say the Argyle at 7:30 on 3/9, and if that's sounding good to folks in a couple of days I will "confirm" the meet-up.

Don't know if reservations are needed or some such -- maybe one of you guys can say.

Looking forward to it.

The Argyle is a very big place - a bit of a cross between a beer barn, nightclub & Historical Houses Trust building.

No reservations should be necessary, but they have a pretty strict "smart casual" dress policy, and the door bitches aren't afraid to live up to their name:

It's one of those places with a red velvet rope to make you feel like you should be flattered at the privilege of queueing. One time, I showed up when there was nobody in the queue, so I ignored the velvet rope and just ducked past the end it, adjacent to the door.

(I was coming from the other direction, and saw no need to walk the long way around, just for the privilege of walking alongside a velvet rope)

The door bitch had other ideas, though:

"Sir, the queue runs along the rope there - I will ask you to return to the start of the queue & approach the door along the carpet"

"But there's nobody else here, there is no queue, and I'm at the door already..."

"I will ask you again to approach the door correctly"

"You seriously want me to walk back over there, just to walk back here again?!??"

"Yes. I hope that you won't cause any problems or I'll have to deny you entry..."

*walks in the most sarcastic manner possible to the start of the rope & back again*

It's lucky I won't be able to make it, because I have a personal rule of automatically vetoing & never returning to any business that treats me with that kind of petty & shitty disrespect. The Bondi Hotel is another place I'll never set foot in again as long as I live, for example.

Anyway....on a Wednesday night they should be happy to have punters there, so you could probably ignore all of what I wrote. Do dress a bit smart, though.

Ah. I literally don't have the clothes with me for "smart casual." Maybe something else nearby?

Nearby is the Glenmore Hotel, where we had our meetup for Mefi's 10th birthday. It has a really nice view of the Opera House etc from the rooftop & is always a good place to take visitors.

Then again, I won't be there, so don't let me influence you.

I've been to The Argyle on weekends in jeans, t-shirt and open-toe sandals. Not sure if the attire looked smart enough, but I didn't have any trouble in getting in. But they do take the rope/carpet seriously. Their attitude is straight out of a Mitchell & Webb sketch, I think.

Any venue in the Rocks area is good for me though.

I'm really new here, but I'm in Sydney and I think i'm free that night

The Glenmore Hotel seems cool. I'll confirm the event. Hope you guys can make it out.

Although I can't make it at all, I note that the map's displaying a 96 Cumberland Road in Cabramatta which is needless to say a long way from the Glenmore in The Rocks.

Okey dokey. I'll be hanging out at Glenmore starting at 7:30 or so. Short blonde hair, brown-rimmed glasses, white and orange checkered button-down, jeans. If I'm the first one there, probably a book.

I'll have a working cell phone, but an American one. [redacted]. If you're coming and want to post your number so that no one has to dial internationally that might be good.

Hope to see a few of you tomorrow!

On my way. Gray suit, white shirt, striped purple-ish tie. Should be there by 7:30.

Sorry I missed it, guys. I was just wiped out after my stupid work seminar. How many folks turned up?
posted by web-goddess at 4:19 PM on March 9, 2011

The three who confirmed (eugenen, equivocator, vidur).

I finally got to ask "are you from the internet?" and then say "me too!", which was great. I had to leave by 9pm, but the 1.5 hrs that I was there just flew by.
